OBJECTIVE: Automatic exposure compensation (AEC) in digital radiographic systems adjusts the greyscale values of the image to correct for underexposure or overexposure, ensuring consistent image brightness and contrast. High-density materials, such as metal posts, can trigger greyscale correction promoted by AEC, potentially influencing radiographic diagnosis. This study aimed to assess whether the enhancement of AEC in endodontically treated tooth restored with metal post affects the detection of simulated periapical lesions using different digital radiographic systems.

BACKGROUND: In hominins, the reduction of prognathism during craniofacial evolution was a significant derived trait differentiating Homo from earlier hominins and other apes and might have contributed significantly to calvarial expansion and encephalization. Gnathic remains of Australopithecus africanus , A. robustus , Homo habilis, and H. erectus from the Plio-Pleistocene boundary 5.3-2.6 MYA were studied for evidence of alveolar bone (AB) loss indicative of periodontal disease(s). AB loss may provide critical insights into craniofacial evolution and the divergence of Homo from the Australopi

BACKGROUND: Autologous bone grafting is considered as "gold standard" in the alveolar ridge augmentation techniques. In situ onlay grafting uses grafts adjacent to edentulous sites without a separate donor site. Several studies have revealed the satisfactory short-term performance of this less invasive modified technique, but no information is available of stability of alveolar ridge reconstructed by in situ onlay grafting and implant performance after occlusal loading in a mid-term follow-up. This study is to retrospectively evaluate the radiographic and patient reported outcomes (PROMs) of a

AIM: This 3D analysis assessed the accuracy of zygomatic implant (ZI) placement using a static surgical guide in correlation with ZAGA classification and the rehabilitation type.
METHODS: Pre-surgical CT scans were used to create a virtual surgical plane, exported as .stl files, and to define the ZAGA classification of each implant. A CT scan was taken 6 months post-surgery, and segmentation of the zygomatic implants was performed. The 3D analysis on 3DSlicer software compared planned and placed zygomatic implants, measuring linear and angular displacements at the apex and base of each model.

This retrospective study evaluated patient-specific subperiosteal implants (IPS) for dental rehabilitation in severely atrophic maxillae. Eight patients with Cawood and Howell class VI atrophy were treated between 2021 and 2025. Rehabilitation was planned with prosthodontists and bioengineers using virtual surgical planning, CAD/CAM technology, and selective laser melting to create custom titanium implants. All implants were placed successfully without major complications. Follow-up ranged from 2 to 20 months (mean: 8.6 y). No infections, implant mobility, or inflammation were observed. Four p

To assess the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP), alveolar bone loss (ABL), and the frequency of root-filled (RF) teeth in athletes, digital panoramic radiographs were obtained from 617 athletes (57.5% males; 42.5% females) with a mean age of 25.4 years (±2.8), evaluating 15.239 teeth. AP was classified using the Periapical Index (PAI). ABL was recorded when bone loss exceeded one-third of root length in more than two teeth. The RF teeth and periapical status were also recorded. Intra-examiner agreement was high (Kappa = 0.87). AP was found in 209 (33.9%) of athletes and 357 (2.3%) of tee

BACKGROUND: Although odontogenic cysts in the maxilla are often seen, malignant changes inside these cysts are rather uncommon. According to reports, the occurrence of carcinomas developing in odontogenic cysts ranges from 1 to 2 per 1,000. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising from an odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a rare malignant transformation that typically presents in the jaws. This form of carcinoma is locally aggressive and often associated with a poor prognosis, especially when the diagnosis is delayed. CASE PRESENTATION: This report discusses a healthy 13-year-old girl with no medic

This retrospective observational study aimed to investigate whether controlled hypertension (HT) is associated with radiographic periapical healing after single-visit non-surgical endodontic retreatment (Re-RCT) compared with systemically healthy individuals. Two groups were formed according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria (n = 22). The HT group consisted of periapical radiographs from 22 teeth of 22 patients (mean age 53.31 ± 9.22 years; 10 females, 12 males) with no systemic diseases other than controlled HT, while the control group included 22 teeth of 22 systemically healthy

INTRODUCTION: This study assesses whether variations to cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) slice thickness (ST) effect the detection accuracy and volume assessment of periapical lesions.
METHODS: Forty periapical lesions were assessed on CBCT reconstructions with 0.125-mm, 0.25-mm, 0.50-mm, 1.00-mm, 1.50-mm, and 2.00-mm ST. Mimics Research was used to perform the semi-automatic segmentation technique to determine periapical lesion volume and CBCT periapical volume index (CBCTPAVI) score on each CBCT reconstruction. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed by determining the percentage of lesions de

Endodontic microsurgery (EMS) is a reliable treatment modality for managing persistent or recurrent periapical pathologies, particularly when conventional nonsurgical retreatment is infeasible or has failed. Various factors influence EMS outcomes, among which the lesion type is a key determinant. Isolated endodontic lesions generally exhibit favourable outcomes, whereas combined endodontic-periodontal lesions and through-and-through defects are clinically challenging and associated with less predictable outcomes. The adjunctive use of regenerative procedures, such as bone grafts, barrier membr

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is the most common odontogenic epithelial tumor, characterized by local aggressiveness and high recurrence rates. Current management lacks a practical staging system to guide surgical decisions, making it challenging to balance radical resection with functional preservation. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study developed and validated a novel bone destruction and radological Morphology (BM) staging system for mandibular conventional ameloblastoma. We analyzed 649 patients from three tertiary centers (2005–2024), categorizing them into BM stages I-III. Recurrence-f
