Salivary-Like Tumors of the Thyroid: A Comprehensive Review of Three Rare Carcinomas.

Thyroid carcinomas represent 3.2% of all new cases of cancer in the United States. Whereas most thyroid tumors arise from follicular cells or, less commonly, parafollicular cells, the derivation of some rare primary thyroid carcinoma subtypes is less clear and represents an area of evolving knowledge. Primary thyroid carcinomas that resemble neoplasms characteristic of the salivary glands ("salivary-like" primary thyroid carcinomas) arguably represent some of the most unusual primary thyroid tumors. Herein, we have undertaken a review of the literature in order to present a comprehensive overv

Kimura's disease mimicking thoracic spine dumbbell neurogenic tumor: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Kimura's disease is a rare, benign chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that mostly affects Asians. The disease typically presents as subcutaneous masses in the head or neck region that are predominantly found in the preauricular and submandibular areas. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old boy presenting with paralysis of both lower extremities and a thoracic spine dumbbell mass was initially diagnosed with a neurogenic tumor, but the pathological and laboratory examinations confirmed the diagnosis of Kimura's disease. The paralysis symptom disappeared rapidly, but the pat

Oropharyngeal Kimura's disease: a diagnostic dilemma and therapeutic challenge.

Kimura's disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder involving subcutaneous tissue and locoregional lymph nodes of head and neck region, characterised by angiolymphoid proliferation. It is typically associated with peripheral eosinophilia, increased serum IgE and lymphadenopathy. Diagnosis is usually based on histopathological examination. Though various treatment modalities have been put forward, surgical management remains the first line of treatment, followed by systemic steroids application. This case report discusses the diagnostic dilemma and therapeutic management of a rare clinical pres

Feasibility and advantages of endoscope-assisted parotidectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The object of this paper was to explore the feasibility and advantages of endoscope-assisted parotid tumour resection. Three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane) were used to search for all related randomised controlled trials or controlled trials (up to November 2019). The key parameters for assessment included 'Endoscope', 'Endoscopes', 'Cancer of Parotid', and 'Parotid Cancer'. To evaluate the feasibility and advantages of endoscope-assisted resection of parotid tumours, the data for each parameter were pooled, based on patients who received endoscope-assisted surgery and those

Viruses and oral diseases in HIV-infected individuals on long-term antiretroviral therapy: What are the risks and what are the mechanisms?

As a result of the extension of life span produced by increasing access to combined antiretroviral therapy, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) face new challenges from comorbidities. Although advances in medical care for HIV infection have dramatically reduced opportunistic infections and AIDS-defining cancers, some non-AIDS-defining cancers (NADC) and specific oral diseases such as periodontitis and salivary gland disease are now more prevalent. Cancer prevention is, therefore, a priority issue in care of PLWH, stressing both restoration of immune function and reduction of non-HIV cancer risk

Kimura Disease: A Case Series and Systematic Review of Clinico-radiological Features.

Kimura disease is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder mostly reported in males in second to third decades from south-east Asia. Head and neck is the most commonly involved region. The usual presentation is painless facial swelling with salivary gland involvement and regional lymphadenopathy. The diagnosis can be suspected on imaging but needs to be proven on histopathology. We describe three histopathology proven cases of Kimura disease and emphasize the specific clinic-radiological findings which can help in early identification of the condition and its differentiation from other diseases wi

A Case of Salivary Duct Carcinoma Intracranial Invasion due to Perineural Invasion Through the Facial Nerve.

BACKGROUND: Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare parotid tumor that often develops as a rapidly growing mass with a poor prognosis. It has a high rate of distant metastases, sometimes with infiltration along nerves. We describe a case of SDC that originated outside the cranium and extended into the cranium along the path of the facial nerve. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 74-year-old man underwent magnetic resonance imaging at a local hospital, which revealed a tumor in the left internal acoustic canal; the patient was referred to our department. A left facial schwannoma was suspected, and magnetic r

Questions around mutation T1010I in MET gene: results of next generation sequencing in Polish patient with suspected hereditary adenoid cystic carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a slowly growing cancer, which is the most common malignant tumor of the salivary glands. It is claimed that it is a non-inherited cancer. People with family history of ACC are reported extremely rarely. We present patients with suspected hereditary ACC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Next generation sequencing (NGS) was performed for both RNA and DNA isolated from FFPE material. RESULTS: In DNA from tumor tissue we detected the mutation in MET gene, in exon 14 c.3029C>T (p.Thr1010Ile). It has never been proven that this mutation may play a role in the pa

Microsecretory adenocarcinoma of the hard palate: A case report of a recently described entity.

We report a case of microsecretory adenocarcinoma of the hard palate. The patient is a 37-year-old woman with a 15 mm submucosal tumor, which was incidentally found by her primary care dentist, in her hard palate. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor exhibiting high signal on T2-weighted image, which was gradually enhanced on dynamic study. Histologically, the tumor border was ill-defined without fibrous capsule and adjoined minor salivary gland with permeative infiltration at the tumor periphery. The tumor comprised intercalated duct-like cells with polygonal narrow eosino

Molecular profile of a pleomorphic adenoma of the hard palate: A case report.

RATIONALE: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of salivary glands. PAs have the potential for regional and distant metastases that preserve their benign phenotype; they also have the potential for malignant transformation. The molecular pathogenesis of malignant neoplasms has been studied extensively in recent years, unlike that of benign tumors, such as PA. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this case report, we identified the molecular signatures of a 57-year-old Japanese woman. Our patient presented with a swelling of the hard palate with an erosive appearance. DIAGNOSES: The patie

Clear Cell Carcinoma of the Hard Palate in an Adolescent Patient: A Case Report.

Clear cell carcinoma is an extremely rare low-grade malignancies occurring in less than 1% of salivary gland tumors. We report a case of clear cell carcinoma of the hard palate in a 15-year-old adolescent patient. She first noticed a palatal tumor at age 9, but the tumor was left untreated for 6 years. We performed incisional biopsy, but no definitive diagnosis was obtained. Excisional biopsy was then performed, and the histopathological diagnosis was clear cell carcinoma of the salivary gland. However, the tumor was exposed at the margin of the surgical specimen; thus, additional excision was
