Looking under the hood of "the Cadillac of cancers:" radioactive iodine-related craniofacial side effects among patients with thyroid cancer.

PURPOSE: Despite having a generally favorable prognosis, differentiated thyroid cancer is known to have a significant, long-term impact on the quality of life of survivors. We wished to investigate short- and long-term effects among thyroid cancer survivors following radioactive iodine therapy. METHODS: We conducted eight focus groups (N = 47) to understand patients' experiences of short- and long-term effects after radioactive iodine treatment and the impact these treatment-related side effects had on patients' quality of life. We elicited responses regarding experiences with side effects fo

EULAR Sjögren's syndrome study group: an eSSential way to address the unmet needs of the disease.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a severe disorder caused by mutations to the COL7A1 gene that deactivate production of a structural protein essential for skin integrity. Haematopoietic cell transplantation can ameliorate some of the symptoms; however, significant side effects from the allogeneic transplant procedure can occur and unresponsive areas of blistering persist. Therefore, we employed genome editing in patient-derived cells to create an autologous platform for multilineage engineering of therapeutic cell types. The clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repea

Primary Sjӧgren's syndrome with renal Fanconi syndrome: Good responses to treatment with glucocorticoids.

BACKGROUND: Renal Fanconi syndrome (FS) is rare in primary Sjӧgren's syndrome (pSS). We aimed to describe the clinicopathological characteristics of pSS associated FS (pSS-FS) and its responses to treatment. METHODS: We reported 25 cases of pSS-FS patients and retrospectively reviewed their clinical records, kidney pathology and follow-up data. RESULTS: The 25 pSS-FS patients were mainly female (92.0%) and the mean age at diagnosis was 43.6±11.3 years. They showed different degrees of proximal tubular dysfunctions and eGFR decline (60.9±32.3 ml/min/1.73m2). Kidney pathology of pSS-FS patient

Hypokalemic paralysis as an initial presentation of Sjogren syndrome.

Sjogren syndrome (SS) is a systemic autoimmune disorder with predominant exocrine gland involvement leading to sicca symptoms. Among extraglandular manifestations, renal disease is the most common. Tubular interstitial nephritis and renal tubular acidosis (RTA) are the common presentations. Mild hypokalemia associated with distal RTA is common in SS, however, severe hypokalemia causing paralysis is unusual. We report the case of a 26-year-old female who presented with hypokalemic paralysis. On evaluation, distal RTA was diagnosed. Further evaluation showed positive SS-a/SS-b antibodies in high

Low-density lipoprotein apheresis for PLA2R-related membranous glomerulonephritis accompanied by IgG4-related tubulointerstitial nephritis.

IgG4-related disease preferentially involves the kidney by tubulointerstitial nephritis with IgG4-positive plasma cell filtration and/or membranous glomerulonephritis. We reported the case of a 68-year-old man with IgG4-related tubulointerstitial nephritis combined with antiphospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R)-related membranous glomerulonephritis, in which distinguishing between idiopathic PLA2R-related and IgG4-related secondary membranous glomerulonephritis was difficult. We diagnosed him as having IgG4-related disease, based on a serum IgG4 level of 170 mg/dL and the presence of IgG4-related

Primary Sjögren syndrome-associated acute interstitial nephritis and type 3 renal tubular acidosis in a patient with thin basement membrane nephropathy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The kidney is one of the common extraglandular sites involved in primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS), with chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) the most common pathology type. Renal involvement in pSS often presents as chronic TIN accompanied by type 1 or 2 renal tubular acidosis (RTA). Description of renal involvement as acute TIN with type III RTA in pSS has been rarely reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 37-year-old woman was admitted with complaints of dry mouth, dry eyes, and progressive muscle weakness for 17 months. Two months before admission, the patient had a blood potassiu

Radioiodine-Induced Salivary Gland Damage Detected by Ultrasonography in Patients Treated for Papillary Thyroid Cancer: Radioactive Iodine Activity and Risk.

Background: An important side effect of radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy in patients treated for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is chronic sialadenitis. Neck ultrasonography (US) easily recognizes radioiodine-induced salivary gland abnormalities. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of US-detected sialadenitis caused by RAI and to identify the risk factors associated with this damage. Methods: This nonconcurrent cohort study includes all PTC-operated patients who were treated with RAI between 2007 and 2017 and were systematically evaluated with preoperative and follow-

Diagnosis, Management, and Dental Considerations for the Diabetic Patient.

Current epidemiological data suggest that the prevalence of diabetes in Canada is increasing. Patients with poor glycemic control are more prone to oral manifestations of diabetes, including periodontal disease, salivary gland dysfunction, halitosis, burning mouth sensation, delayed wound healing and increased susceptibility to infections. Diabetic patients are also at risk of experiencing an intraoperative diabetic emergency in the dental office. Therefore, dentists must appreciate and implement important dental management considerations while providing care to diabetic patients. In this arti

Blocking T cell co-stimulation in primary Sjögren's syndrome: rationale, clinical efficacy and modulation of peripheral and salivary gland biomarkers.

There is accumulating evidence that patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) display aberrant CD4+ T cell responses, both in the peripheral compartment and in the inflamed salivary glands. CD4+ T cell abnormalities are also critically associated with B cell hyper activation, one of the hallmarks of disease, which is linked with disease severity and evolution to lymphoma. T cell activation and the cross-talk between T and B cells are tightly regulated by the balance between co-stimulatory pathways, such as the interactions between CD80/CD86:CD28, CD40:CD40L and ICOS:ICOSL, and co-inhibito
