NKCC1: Newly Found as a Human Disease-Causing Ion Transporter.

Among the electroneutral Na+-dependent chloride transporters, NKCC1 had until now evaded identification as a protein causing human diseases. The closely related SLC12A transporters, NKCC2 and NCC have been identified some 25 years ago as responsible for Bartter and Gitelman syndromes: two renal-dependent salt wasting disorders. Absence of disease was most surprising since the NKCC1 knockout mouse was shown in 1999 to be viable, albeit with a wide range of deleterious phenotypes. Here we summarize the work of the past 5 years that introduced us to clinical cases involving NKCC1. The most striki

Evaluation of the relationship between malocclusions and sleep-disordered breathing in children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between dental/skeletal malocclusions and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in the early diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in children. METHODS: Patients were evaluated by pedodontists to identify dental, skeletal, and functional malocclusion (n = 240; <15 years). In order to determine the sleep and daytime behavior of the patients, pediatric sleep questionnaires (PSQ) were applied. Per results of the PSQ, patients with a mean of ≥ 0.33 were defined as the high-risk group. RESULTS: A total of 25.8% children were in the high-risk group, with th

Vector competence of Virginia mosquitoes for Zika and Cache Valley viruses.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases are a major public health concern and cause significant morbidity and mortality. Zika virus (ZIKV) is the etiologic agent of a massive outbreak in the Americas that originated in Brazil in 2015 and shows a strong association with congenital ZIKV syndrome in newborns. Cache Valley virus (CVV) is a bunyavirus that causes mild to severe illness in humans and ruminants. In this study, we investigated the vector competence of Virginia mosquitoes for ZIKV and CVV to explore their abilities to contribute to potential outbreaks. METHODS: To determine vector competenc

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in pediatric salivary gland diseases: a guide to the differential diagnosis.

Salivary gland pathologies in children are frequent, particularly viral infections, but rarely need cross-sectional imaging. However, when a mass involves the salivary spaces (primarily or as a secondary invasion from other neck spaces) it may pose problems in the differential diagnosis and in immediate management. Infrequently, systemic autoimmune diseases can also involve the salivary parenchyma in children and correctly interpreting the constellation of findings in the whole body is critical for the diagnosis. Distinguishing between cystic and solid masses is the first step for radiologists

Differences in clinical features between small fiber and sensitive large fiber neuropathies in Sjögren's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: To distinguish large (LFN) and small fiber neuropathies (SFN) in Sjögren's syndrome (SS) requires electroneuromyography (EMG) first, but this is time-consuming and has sometimes a limited accessibility, which can lead to a diagnostic delay. We aimed to identify clinical features that could distinguish SFN from sensitive LFN in SS. METHODS: The study included patients with SS who were monitored in the internal medicine and neurology departments at Angers University Hospital between 2010 and 2016, and who were tested for suspected peripheral neuropathy. Patients with clinical motor

[Nitrate: a pioneer from the mouth to the systemic health and diseases].

Dietary nitrate which mainly comes from green leafy vegetables, is absorbed into blood circulation by the intestinal mucosa. Parotid gland is an important organ for transporting nitrate. Nitrate in blood is taken up by sialin, a nitrate transporter and concentrated in salivary glands and secreted into saliva. The salivary nitrate is partially reduced to nitrite and nitric oxide by oral bacteria, and then salivary nitrate and nitrite return into blood circulation with swallowing and intestinal mucosal absorption. As a non-classic source of nitric oxide, nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway play

Co-existence of cheilitis glandularis and actinic cheilitis-an update.

Cheilitis Glandularis (CG) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with no specific etiology that affects the minor salivary glands of the lips. The main characteristic of this condition consists of the exit of thick saliva or mucopurulent secretion through the dilated ducts present in the vermilion border of the lip, associated to varying degrees of macrocheilia. In this article we report the case of a male patient, leucoderma, 48 years old, that exhibited actinic cheilitis and glandular cheilitis. We emphasized the clinical management, diagnosis criteria and treatment, taking into consideration t
