Ultrasonic viscoelastic imaging: a tool for parotid gland tumor differentiation.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the value of viscoelastic parameters in the differential diagnosis of parotid gland tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 80 patients with parotid gland tumors who underwent viscoelastic ultrasound examination from September 2024 to April 2025. Patients were divided into four groups: pleomorphic adenoma (PA), warthin tumor (WT), benign tumor (BT), and malignant tumor (MT). Regions of interest (ROI) were delineated within the tumor and a 2 mm surrounding area to measure quantitative parameters, including shear wave elastography (SWE), visco

Interdigitating Dendritic Cell Sarcoma: A Rare Diagnostic Challenge.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is a rare malignancy with a poor prognosis, and currently, there lacks a standardized treatment protocol. IDCS can be challenging diagnostically given its immunophenotypic overlap with other malignancies such as melanoma. We describe a 52-year-old woman presenting with a left cervical mass. Following workup and MDT discussion, she underwent a unilateral modified radical neck dissection and superficial parotidectomy. On histopathological examination, despite some morphological and immunohistochemical overlap with melanoma, IDCS was confidently diagn

Definition of predictive and prognostic immune biomarkers for salivary gland cancer from the intratumoural and systemic immune status: detailed protocol of the prospective, observatory ImmoGlandula study.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland carcinomas (SGC) are rare tumours. The term SGC is not more than an umbrella for a variety of histogenetically, morphologically and biologically distinct entities. Accordingly, SGCs have not been sufficiently investigated to date. Their rarity makes it difficult to reach high patient numbers for individual entities in clinical studies, leading to pooling patients with different histological subtypes to attain sufficient participants. The different histological subtypes of SGC differ significantly in their clinicopathological features, such as their grading, their o

[Oncocytic lipoadenoma of the salivary glands: A poorly known and underestimated tumor?].

We report the cases of a 68-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman affected by a tumour of the parotid gland measuring 5.5cm and 6.5cm, respectively. The clinical examination found an aspect suggesting an infiltration of the parotid gland in the first case and a rapid evolution in the second case. After excision, the pathological examination showed nodular encapsulated, non-infiltrated lesions composed of adipocytes intermixed with oncocytic cell nests, with no sign of malignancy. These were two cases of oncocytic lipoadenomas of the parotid gland. Oncocytic lipoadenoma corresponds to a very rar

Parkinson's Disease and Salivary Issues: A Survey.

BACKGROUND: Salivary dysfunction, including xerostomia and drooling, is common in Parkinson's disease and further impairs oral health and quality of life, which are already compromised in this population. Their effective management demands deeper insight into the complexity of salivary dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To examine the occurrence and associations of xerostomia and drooling complaints in individuals with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: 111 individuals with Parkinson's disease (69.9 ± 7.7 years; 46.8% female) participated in an online survey. The questionnaire used validated scales (e.g., X

Structural and functional comparative analysis of porcine and human salivary glands: a narrative review for translational research.

The use of animal models plays a crucial role in advancing our understanding of human diseases, providing valuable insights into pathophysiological mechanisms and supporting the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. Among the available models, porcine models have been recognized as particularly relevant due to their anatomical, genetic, and physiological similarities to humans. Notably, this review provides the first comprehensive comparative analysis of porcine and human salivary glands, integrating anatomical, functional, and translational perspectives. Porcine salivary glands of

Exploration of potential biomarkers in salivary duct carcinoma based on bioinformatics analysis.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare and aggressive malignant tumor, with scarce reports on its pathogenesis and treatment methods. This study aims to explore the potential biomarkers of SDC. SDC cases were analyzed using Illumina microarrays, and Limma identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between cancer and normal tissues. An intersection of these DEGs with the differential genes from the GSE138581 dataset was obtained through Venn analysis to identify the core DEGs. The core DEGs were analyzed by search Tool for the retrieval of interacting genes/proteins (STRING) and cytoscap

Triglyceride-Glucose Index in Parotid Gland Tumours: A Novel Biomarker for Differentiating Warthin Tumour and Pleomorphic Adenoma.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin tumour are the two most common benign parotid gland tumours with distinct histological and clinical profiles. Recent studies suggest a potential link between metabolic disturbances-particularly insulin resistance-and the development of Warthin tumours. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has emerged as a simple, cost-effective biomarker of insulin resistance. This study aimed to investigate the potential role of the TyG index in differentiating between pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin tumour. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was cond

Sclerosing polycystic adenoma of the salivary gland mimicking other salivary gland neoplasms: A series of 3 cases.

Sclerosing polycystic adenoma is a recently described, rare sclerosing tumor of salivary gland with fibrocystic changes. It was previously called sclerosing polycystic adenosis. This benign tumor closely resembles other salivary gland neoplasms. Less than 50 cases of this entity have been reported so far. Here we present three cases of sclerosing polycystic adenomas, in a 52-year-old male, a 27-year-old female and a 30-year-old female respectively. All the three cases radiologically and cytologically resembled other salivary gland neoplasms. It is important to be aware of this entity so as not

Systemic Therapy for Salivary Gland Cancers: A Review of Targeted and Chemotherapeutic Approaches.

Systemic therapy for recurrent and metastatic salivary gland malignancies (SGMs) remains a major therapeutic challenge. Traditional chemotherapy offers modest response rates with limited durability, and its role is largely palliative. The most meaningful advances have occurred in biomarker-selected subgroups: androgen receptor blockade for AR-positive salivary duct carcinoma and HER2-directed therapy for HER2-positive tumors have demonstrated superior response rates and survival (often exceeding 50%), compared with the single digit response rates seen with unselected chemotherapy or tyrosine k

Enhancing the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytology Through Ancillary Testing Using Liquid-Based Cytology.

OBJECTIVE: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a key diagnostic method for salivary gland lesions. The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytology (MSRSGC), a six-tiered classification system, standardises reporting and provides risk of malignancy (ROM) for each category. Although MSRSGC recommends ancillary tests such as immunocytochemistry (ICC), reports on their clinical application remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the utilisation rate of ancillary tests in MSRSGC classifications and assess their effectiveness, particularly with liquid-based cytology. METHODS: D

Sebaceous adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland: review and analysis of the literature.

Primary sebaceous adenocarcinoma (SAC) of the parotid gland is extremely rare, and because of its rarity, its behaviour is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to clarify the behaviour of SAC of the parotid gland, including the main features and their relationships to the prognosis. Sixty-six reported cases of the disease were identified and included in the study, and these were reviewed and analysed. SAC of the parotid gland occurred in patients aged 6-92 years, with a bimodal age distribution (20 s and 50-70 s). Of the 66 patients, 59% were female and 41% were male, giving a male

Apocrine Intraductal Carcinoma With A Frankly Invasive Salivary Duct Carcinoma Component: A Case Report Showing Novel Genetic Alterations.

Intraductal carcinoma (IDC) and salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) are both rare tumors of the salivary glands that most frequently occur in the parotid glands. We present an example of apocrine IDC with a frankly invasive SDC component in the parotid gland. The clinicopathologic and molecular features were analyzed in this study. A 76-year-old female patient was admitted to hospital with a parotid mass. The biopsy result showed SDC, and radical resection surgery was performed. The tumor was characterized by an intraductal proliferation forming solid and cribriform structures with abundant eosinoph

Changes in the classification of malignant salivary gland tumours across the last three WHO editions.

This article explores the evolution of the classification of malignant salivary gland tumours (MSGTs) over the years, focusing on the last three editions of the World Health Organization (WHO) texts-the third, fourth and fifth editions. It describes changes in the nomenclature of entities, the incorporation of new entities, and the removal of others. The reasons underlying the modification of existing entity names are also presented, along with an examination of the rationale for their exclusion from the classification and the persistence of these designations in the scientific literature, as
