Evaluation of the diagnostic utility of an immunohistochemical panel (MYB, MYBL1, β-catenin, and LEF1) in basaloid tumors of the salivary glands.

Salivary gland tumors, including adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), pleomorphic adenoma (PA), basal cell adenoma (BCA), and basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC), share histologic features, making differential diagnosis difficult. However, these tumors differ in biological behavior, treatment strategy, and prognosis, so accurate pathological diagnosis is of great significance. In this study, we used a panel of immunohistochemical antibodies (MYB, MYBL1, β-catenin, and LEF1) to distinguish the abovementioned salivary basaloid tumors. For ACC, 80% (16/20) of cases were MYB-positive, and β-catenin was es

Shear wave elastography of the salivary glands in the diagnosis of Sjögren disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Sjögren disease (SD) is characterized by lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis of the salivary glands. Shear wave elastography (SWE), an ultrasound-based modality that quantifies tissue stiffness, may assist in SD diagnosis. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze the diagnostic performance of SWE in evaluating major salivary glands in individuals with SD, based on studies applying the 2016 ACR/EULAR classification criteria. METHODS: Six electronic databases and gray literature sources were searched. Cross-sectional and diagnostic accuracy studies were included.

Oncocytic papillary cystadenoma of the parotid gland: characteristic multiparametric MRI signature.

INTRODUCTION: Oncocytic papillary cystadenoma is a rare benign epithelial neoplasm of the salivary glands, infrequently arising in the parotid gland. Its preoperative imaging characteristics are poorly described, and the diagnosis is often established only after surgical excision and histopathologic examination. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two female patients (62 and 77 years old) who presented with parotid masses. Multiparametric MRI demonstrated multiloculated cystic lesions with distinctive features: (1) markedly low signal intensity (“signal void”) on T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted im

Comparison of the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratios in Two Groups of Patients with Benign and Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors.

INTRODUCTION: The ratio of neutrophils to peripheral lymphocytes is an inflammatory marker, and, based on previous studies, this ratio is associated with poor survival in several cancers. This study was conducted to compare the neutrophils-to-lymphocytes ratio (NLR) and platelets-to-lymphocytes ratio (PLR) in two groups of patients with benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was cross-sectional, comparing two groups of patients with benign and malignant salivary gland masses. During the last 6 years (from 2018 to 2024), 380 Patients with a definite diagn

Complement contributes to ICI-triggered sialadenitis and predicts ICI efficacy.

While highly efficacious for numerous cancers, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can cause unpredictable and potential immune-related adverse events (irAEs). In this study, we aimed to unveil the underlying mechanisms for sialadenitis irAEs under cancer context and assess the response-associated biomarkers for ICI therapy. We found that cholangiocarcinoma patients receiving anti-PD-1 agent showed dry symptoms, and a declined level of serum complement and immune compound were also observed when compared to those without anti-PD-1 treatment. We further demonstrated that the elevated complement

Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-2 positive metastatic salivary duct carcinoma with remarkable response to targeted therapy: a case report and therapeutic implications.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy that frequently overexpresses Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2). Despite the increasing recognition of HER2-targeted strategies, evidence remains limited and largely derived from small trials and case series. We report the case of a middle-aged man with HER2-positive metastatic SDC who achieved near-complete pathologic and radiological response to trastuzumab and docetaxel, enabling surgical resection for locoregional control. This case highlights the role of anti-HER2 therapy as a first-line strategy in SDC

Assessment of a New Tool to Monitor Oral Hydration and Dry Mouth: FishburneTabs.

OBJECTIVES: Hyposalivation is a common condition, particularly among older adults, often resulting from polypharmacy or age-related salivary gland degeneration. While sialometry is the reference method for diagnosing hyposalivation, it is challenging to use in dependent patients or those with cognitive impairments. This study aimed to test a new tool, FishburneTabs (FBTs), by comparing it with sialometry and evaluating its concordance with the Clinical Oral Dryness Score (CODS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study compared three different techniques for assessing hyposalivation in 59 patients (

Salivary Duct Carcinoma: Report of an Advanced Challenging Case Diagnosed by Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy.

We report a rare case of salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) in a 67-year-old male who presented with a rapidly enlarging, ill-defined left upper neck mass, accompanied by both cervical and axillary lymphadenopathy. Initial punch biopsy of the neck mass suggested metastatic breast carcinoma. However, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (US-FNA) and comprehensive immunohistochemical analysis, in conjunction with radiologic findings, confirmed the diagnosis of SDC. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges of SDC and reinforces the pivotal role of US-FNA cytology in establishing a definitive
