Minor salivary flow as a diagnostic tool for screening hyposalivation in Medication-Induced Xerostomia.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine whether minor salivary flow (MSF) rate, measured via a rapid paper-based test, can serve as a reliable screening tool for detecting hyposalivation. This study, conducted in a real-world clinical setting, evaluated the diagnostic performance of MSF against unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) as the reference standard in individuals experiencing xerostomia due to medications. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 135 adults aged 45-64 years with xerostomia and ongoing anticholinergic medication use. MSF was measured using a one-minute Shrimer strip place

Rare laryngeal tumors: A retrospective bicentric study on 74 patients and systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck cancers are the seventh most common malignancy worldwide, with laryngeal cancer (LC) the most prevalent subtype. Although squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represents 85-90% of LC, rare non-SCC tumors-including laryngeal sarcomas (LS), neuroendocrine carcinomas (LNC), malignant salivary gland tumors (LMSGT), and mucosal melanomas (LMM)-are uncommon but clinically challenging. We combined a bicentric retrospective cohort with a systematic literature review to provide an integrated assessment of these entities. METHODS: Patients with non-SCC malignant laryngeal tumors tr

Oral health status and its predictors among hemodialysis patients in Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its treatment through hemodialysis can lead to significant oral complications that impair nutrition and quality of life. However, data on the oral health status of Saudi patients undergoing hemodialysis remain limited. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of xerostomia, taste alterations, dental caries, tooth wear, gingival inflammation, and tooth loss among hemodialysis patients in the Ha’il region of Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 314 adult CKD patients receiving regular hemodialysis. Data were collected through

ICI-induced Granulomatous Sialadenitis is Responsive to Prednisone.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed cancer treatment but commonly cause immune-related adverse events (irAEs), whether administered as monotherapy or in combination with other oncological agents. We present the first reported case of ICI-induced granulomatous sialadenitis in a male patient in his mid-fifties with BRAF-V600E-mutated papillary thyroid carcinoma who received sequential treatment with BRAF/MEK inhibitors followed by pembrolizumab. The patient experienced acute-onset severe xerostomia and salivary hypofunction, prompting ICI cessation and salivary gland biopsy. Int

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology in Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology of Salivary Gland Lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland lesions (SGL) are a rare and heterogeneous group of benign and malignant masses. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), guided by the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC), offers a minimally invasive method for early differentiation of SGL. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of FNAC in diagnosing major SGL within the MSRSGC framework. METHODS: Three decision tree models were created based on probabilities from real-world and literature data. Real-world data was derived from the previously published largest

Endobronchial Lesions in Children: Radiologic, Bronchoscopic, and Pathologic Correlation.

Endobronchial lesions in children are uncommon and have various causes and symptoms can be vague and nonspecific, thus making early and accurate diagnosis challenging. Infants may only present with segmental hyperinflation, persistent lobar consolidation, or respiratory distress. Children with endobronchial obstruction usually present with wheezing, persistent cough, recurrent fever, and hemoptysis. Obstructive symptoms are seen when the mass occludes more than one-half of the endobronchial lumen. Unilateral lobar consolidation on chest radiographs is frequently diagnosed as pneumonia, althoug

Cohort study of standardized treatment pathways by multidisciplinary tumor board decision making in patients with salivary gland malignancies.

Salivary gland malignancies (SGM) are heterogeneous regarding origin, biology and prognosis. We investigated patterns of clinical and pathological features and outcome differences attributable to standardized decision making for treatment pathways before and after establishing our multidisciplinary tumor board (MDTB) in 2007. We retrospectively analyzed data of electronic health records, the Saxon cancer registry and the clinic's tumor database (1990-2024). Statistical analysis included contingency tables, Pearson's chi-squared tests for categorical, Student's t test for numerical data, Kaplan

Oral and maxillofacial manifestations of systemic sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by fibrosis, microvascular damage, and immune dysregulation. Although its cutaneous and systemic features have been extensively delineated, its oral and maxillofacial features are not well studied. Microstomia is one of the most incapacitating oral symptoms in SSc, hampering oral hygiene, and dental treatment. Xerostomia leads to increased caries susceptibility, whereas periodontal disease and vascular insufficiency hasten tissue breakdown, leading to attachment loss and bone resorption. Temporomandibular joint i

Multiple hyalinizing granulomas mimicking pulmonary malignancy.

Pulmonal hyalinizing granuloma (PHG) is a rare benign disease of unknown cause, first described by Engleman in 1977 (1). Fewer than 200 cases have been reported worldwide (2). We present the case of a middle-aged male referred to the respiratory clinic after a routine chest X-ray (CXR) and chest computed topography (CT) scan revealed multiple bilateral peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPL). Over a 10-year period, the patient´s PPLs increased in size and number, with heterogeneous hypermetabolism observed on fluorodeoxyglucose -positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) imaging. Initially, the PPLs we

Targeted transdermal scopolamine delivery over the salivary glands for sialorrhea: Dose-response and systemic safety in rats.

Sialorrhea is a common and distressing symptom in patients with neurological disorders, often impairing quality of life and increasing the risk of aspiration. Although oral anticholinergic agents are widely prescribed, their systemic side effects frequently limit long-term adherence. This study investigated the dose-response relationship and systemic safety of transdermal scopolamine applied directly over the salivary glands in a rat model. Formulations containing 0.2%, 0.5%, 1%, and 5% scopolamine (0.05 g per rat) were compared with oral administration at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg. Transdermal appl

Voxel-based Analysis Identifies New Functional Subregions Predictive of Xerostomia After Head and Neck Cancer Radiation Therapy.

PURPOSE: Xerostomia is a common and debilitating toxicity following head and neck cancer radiation therapy (RT). Although adaptive RT (ART) strategies can reduce mean parotid gland (PG) dose, clinical trials have shown limited benefit in reducing xerostomia, suggesting global dose metrics may be insufficient. Voxel-based analysis (VBA) enables assessing local dose-toxicity relationships and may identify symptom-related subregions (SRS) more predictive of toxicity. This study aimed to identify xerostomia-associated SRS using VBA and assess their relevance using a functional salivary atlas. MET

Study on the mechanism of radioactive salivary gland injury: a relatively comprehensive statement.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced salivary gland dysfunction (RSGD) is a common complication of radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancers that leads to xerostomia and related oral complications. It reduces treatment tolerance and quality of life, while current clinical interventions only alleviate superficial symptoms and fail to restore salivary gland function. This highlights the necessity to explore the pathogenesis of RSGD and to identify targets; existing studies have focused on DNA damage, oxidative stress, and fibrosis, but lack insights into emerging mechanisms such as ferroptosi
