Live imaging reveals a biphasic mode of dissemination of Borrelia burgdorferi within ticks.

Lyme disease is caused by transmission of the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi from ticks to humans. Although much is known about B. burgdorferi replication, the routes and mechanisms by which it disseminates within the tick remain unclear. To better understand this process, we imaged live, infectious B. burgdorferi expressing a stably integrated, constitutively expressed GFP reporter. Using isolated tick midguts and salivary glands, we observed B. burgdorferi progress through the feeding tick via what we believe to be a novel, biphasic mode of dissemination. In the first phase, replicating spi

Accessory parotid gland lesions: case report and review of literature.

There are numerous causes for chronic cheek swelling, including masseteric hypertrophy, lymphadenopathy, diffuse inflammatory changes and neoplasia. We report an unusual case of a recurrent swelling as the result of sialolithiasis of an accessory parotid gland, which lay isolated from the main parotid gland along the Stensen's duct. The calculi developed in the accessory salivary tissue whereas all major salivary glands presented without sialolithiasis. Clinical findings as well as imaging results are shown and surgical management and histopathology are discussed. Hereby, for the first time we

Drug-induced paraparotid fat deposition in patients with HIV: case reports.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of patients with HIV is managed effectively with highly active antiretroviral therapy, but complications in the form of a lipodystrophy syndrome (LDS) often develop. CASE DESCRIPTION: . The authors describe two patients who had bilateral parotid area fatty swellings, which are a manifestation of the fat redistribution seen in LDS. Fat hypertrophy, fat atrophy or both in other regions; dyslipidemia; and glucose abnormalities also were present. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Although the LDS in patients with HIV is recognized visibly by fat redistribution, the

Salivary amylase induction by tannin-enriched diets as a possible countermeasure against tannins.

Tannins are characterized by protein-binding affinity. They have astringent/bitter properties that act as deterrents, affecting diet selection. Two groups of salivary proteins, proline-rich proteins and histatins, are effective precipitators of tannin, decreasing levels of available tannins. The possibility of other salivary proteins having a co-adjuvant role on host defense mechanisms against tannins is unknown. In this work, we characterized and compared the protein profile of mice whole saliva from animals fed on three experimental diets: tannin-free diet, diet with the incorporation of 5%

Genome analysis of a Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus reveals a novel, large, double-stranded circular DNA virus.

Several species of tsetse flies can be infected by the Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV). Infection causes salivary gland hypertrophy and also significantly reduces the fecundity of the infected flies. To better understand the molecular basis underlying the pathogenesis of this unusual virus, we sequenced and analyzed its genome. The GpSGHV genome is a double-stranded circular DNA molecule of 190,032 bp containing 160 nonoverlapping open reading frames (ORFs), which are distributed equally on both strands with a gene density of one per 1.2 kb. It has a high A+T cont

Seasonal prevalence and transmission of salivary gland hypertrophy virus of house flies (Diptera: Muscidae).

A survey (2005-2006) of house fly, Musca dormestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) populations on four Florida dairy farms demonstrated the presence of flies with acute symptoms of infection with salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) virus on all farms. Disease incidence varied among farms (farm averages, 0.5-10.1%) throughout the year, and it showed a strong positive correlation with fly density. Infections were most common among flies that were collected in a feed barn on one of the farms, especially among flies feeding on wet brewers grains (maximum 34% SGH). No infections were observed among adult flie

Morphometric analysis of the parotid gland affected by alcoholic sialosis.

BACKGROUND: In alcoholic parotid sialosis, the gland is frequently enlarged due to ductal and/or acinar hypertrophy, ductal hyperplasy and stromal fat infiltration. The aim of this study was to determine acinar and ductal dimensions, the number of striated ducts and the proportion of fat tissue in patients with and without alcoholic parotid sialosis. METHODS: Twelve parotid biopsy samples from patients with hepatic alcoholic cirrhosis and those from seven controls were used. A morphometrical study with a digital image analyser attached to an optical microscope was carried out. Direct and indi

[Clinic and ultrasound of salivary gland diseases--Part II].

Ultrasound can be valuable in the assessment of salivary gland disease. This examination is simple, non-invasive and cost-effective. Few cases require the need for additional imaging modalities. The use of ultrasound can confirm a diagnosis that has been suggested by case history and findings. Evidence of a mass is an indication for fine-needle aspiration. This does not eliminate the need for histological follow-up.

Sequence analysis of a non-classified, non-occluded DNA virus that causes salivary gland hypertrophy of Musca domestica, MdSGHV.

The genome of the virus that causes salivary gland hypertrophy in Musca domestica (MdSGHV) was sequenced. This non-classified, enveloped, double stranded, circular DNA virus had a 124,279bp genome. The G + C content was 43.5% with 108 putative methionine-initiated open reading frames (ORFs). Thirty ORFs had homology to database proteins: eleven to proteins coded by both baculoviruses and nudiviruses (p74, pif-1, pif-2, pif-3, odv-e66, rr1, rr2, iap, dUTPase, MMP, and Ac81-like), seven to nudiviruses (mcp, dhfr, ts, tk and three unknown proteins), one to baculovirus (Ac150-like), one to herpesv

Quantitative PCR analysis of the salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV) in a laboratory colony of Glossina pallidipes.

Many species of tsetse flies can be infected by a virus that causes salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) and virus isolated from Glossina pallidipes (GpSGHV) has recently been sequenced. Flies having SGH have a reduced fecundity and fertility. To better understand the impact of this virus in a laboratory colony of G. pallidipes, where the majority of flies are infected but asymptomatic, and to follow the development of SGH in symptomatic flies in relation to virus copy number, a quantitative PCR (qPCR) method was developed. The qPCR analyses revealed that in asymptomatic flies virus copy number av

Benign masseter muscle hypertrophy.

Idiopathic hypertrophy of the masseter muscle is a rare disorder of unknown cause. Some authors associate it with the habit of chewing gum, temporo-mandibular joint disorder, congenital and functional hypertrophies, and emotional disorders (stress and nervousness). Most patients complain of the cosmetic change caused by facial asymmetry, also called square face, however, symptoms such as trismus, protrusion and bruxism may also occur. The goals of the present investigation were: to report a case of idiopathic masseter hypertrophy, describe its symptoms and treatment. The patient reported bilat

Different role of isoproterenol and NOS inhibitors on salivary ducts of rats.

OBJECTIVES: Nitric oxide (NO) is a diffusible intracellular messenger that is present in saliva. Chronic treatment with isoproterenol, a beta receptor agonist, stimulates the release of NO from acinar cells and induces salivary gland hypertrophy. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of NO synthesis inhibitors and isoproterenol on rat salivary glands. We analyzed salivary gland weight and the number of ducts per unit area (0.5mm(2)) by NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry (to identify the presence of the enzyme NO synthase-NOS) and haematoxylin-and-eosin (HE). METHODS: For 8 days mal
