We describe two cases of acute transient swelling of the upper side of parotid glands of the patients after general anesthesia in the lateral position. The serum amylase levels in the patients were not increased and the enlargement of the parotid gland was diagnosed as anesthesia mumps. Previous reports suggested that mechanical compression might produce the swelling of the secreting organ, but our patients showed temporal parotid enlargement in the upper free side. Pathological studies demonstrated that the salivary gland hypertrophy virus of houseflies (MdSGHV) shuts down reproduction in infected females. The mechanism that underlay the disruption of reproduction functioned on several levels. Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas are rare, low-grade, malignant salivary gland tumors. They are mostly seen in the parotid gland. The submandibular gland is a rare localization. Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare disease, and Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is unusual in adolescents. We report the first case of biopsy-proven JDM and SS with pulmonary involvement. A PCR based diagnostic method to detect salivary gland hypertrophy virus (SGHV) in tsetse flies is described. Two sets of primers GpSGHV1F/GpSGHV1R and GpSGHV2F/GpSGHV2R were selected from a virus-specific sequence. Congenital absence of the major salivary glands is an infrequent disorder. Clinically, patients may be asymptomatic or may present with dryness of the mouth, difficulty in chewing and swallowing, and dental caries. The absence of the submandibular gland may be associated with hypertrophy of the contralateral submandibular gland. We report a case of ipsilateral sublingual hypertrophy associated with unilateral submandibular aplasia.

A changing picture of oral lesions associated with HIV/AIDS has been documented. With the use of antiretroviral therapy, salivary gland swellings and other less common conditions associated with HIV/AIDS are now becoming more common. Patients with bilateral parotid swellings are seen in the dental office. The swellings may be initiated by HIV. Diagnosis demands a thorough clinical examination combined with imaging. Usually, multiple parotid cysts are present. However, the authors wish to call attention to those HIV patients whose swellings are caused by a lymphocytic infiltration. Histology of the soft palate and uvula in snorers and patients with OSA syndrome has been a subject of investigation of many authors. In majority of specimens the hypertrophy of the salivary glands as well as congestion and dilation of the thin-walled vessels were observed. Some of the samples presented atrophy of the muscle bundles. Also, the inflammatory changes as lymphocytic infiltrations were proven. In each case adults served as a control group. In this study the histologic analysis of the soft palate and uvula samples from patients suffering from snoring and OSA syndrome was performed.
