Reports on medical research examinations in the field of tropical medicine of 130 indigenous, who were examined in the central Highland of West-Irian during an interdisciplinare research project. The inhabitants of this markedly isolated area are pygmies of a strong, well proportioned build of the body and in a relative good general condition. No avitaminoses, nor symptoms of malnutrition, nor tuberculosis were discovered, in spite of an only moderate intake of albumine and carbohydrates. The enzyme content and the secretory behaviour of normal rat salivary glands were compared with these properties in glands made hypertrophic and hyperplastic by the chronic administration of isoproterenol. The enlarged glands displayed reductions in the concentrations of ribonuclease, deoxyribonuclease and amylase. The secretory behaviour in vivo was similar for all enzymes in both types of glands, but the enlarged glands secreted a lower percentage of their content in vitro. Repeated amputation of the lower incisors in rats, 11- and 14-days old, caused hypertrophy of the testis only in the presence of the submaxillary salivary glands. Bilateral submaxillary and sublingual sialadenectomy prevented hypertrophy of the testis. The role of functional activity in mediating compensatory enlargement of the parotid gland after removal of the other major salivary glands was investigated. Increased levels of activity were achieved by feeding rats a bulk diet. Conversely, a liquid diet was used to reduce the functional demands on the parotid. It was found that the liquid diet completely prevented the compensatory response from occurring. The salivary glands participate in systemic illnesses because they are secretory structures allied with the gastrointestinal tract. Thus they are involved in systemic inflammatory, allergic, and neoplastic conditions. Perhaps the most common condition is that of mumps in the acute phase. Of the chronic diseases, Mikulicz's disease or Sjögren's syndrome is most frequently noted. In most instances of systemic involvement, the salivary gland enlargement is the rule, with the gland being tense, soft, and enlarged, and with progressive growth over a period of time. Usually all glands are involved.

Among the secretory disturbances ("Dyschylien") of salivary glands the sialadenosis of the parotid gland is a clinic and a morphologic definited entity. Eighteen patients with alcoholic cirrhosis were examined, and parotid saliva was collected. Enlargements of the parotid glands were seen in eleven of the eighteen patients (61%). Repeated amputation of the lower incisor in August line rats induced hypertrophy of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. This was true hypertrophy accompanied by hypertrophy of the structural units (acini, cells, nuclei). Cell hypertrophy depended on the hypertrophy of the organellae and the accumulation of secretory materials in the cells. Hypertrophy of the nuclei of acinar cells was conditioned by polyploidisation. Polyploidisation and the changes in the cell ulctrastructure in the submandibular salivary glands pointed to the increase in the functional activity of the organ.

After burn or resection of one submandibular salivary gland the contralateral gland responded by an increase of proliferation. The maximal mitotic index was observed 48 hours after the resection and 72 hours after the burn. The effects of 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) on the postnatal differentiation of rat submandibular gland and on the isoproterenol-induced changes of differentiation were studied. The rats were injected with BrdU for three consecutive days, beginning at two days of age. The total dose of BrdU was 0.9 mg/g body weight.
