Interactions between Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus and tsetse endosymbionts in wild tsetse populations.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse control is considered an effective and sustainable tactic for the control of cyclically transmitted trypanosomosis in the absence of effective vaccines and inexpensive, effective drugs. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is currently used to eliminate tsetse fly populations in an area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) context in Senegal. For SIT, tsetse mass rearing is a major milestone that associated microbes can influence. Tsetse flies can be infected with microorganisms, including the primary and obligate Wigglesworthia glossinidia, the commensal Sodalis glossinid

A Perspective on the Influence of National Corporate Governance Institutions and Government's Political Ideology on the Speed to Lockdown as a Means of Protection Against Covid-19.

OBJECTIVES: Detection of systemic sclerosis-associated antibodies (SSc-Ab) in routine clinical practice is mostly restricted to anti-centromere and anti-Scl-70 antibodies. However, also other antinuclear antibodies have been shown to be valuable diagnostic and prognostic markers for the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of measuring the most prevalent SSc-Ab with fluoroenzymeimmunoassay (FEIA) as an alternative for the combined conventional techniques (CCT). METHODS: Sera from 144 consecutive systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients previously tested by CCT (i

The Effect of the Musca domestica Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus on Food Consumption in Its Adult Host, the Common House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae).

The Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) substantially enlarges the house fly's salivary glands and prevents or delays ovarian development in its adult host, but the effect that MdSGHV has on the house fly's food consumption is currently unknown. Using house flies from a laboratory-reared colony, we evaluated the effect of MdSGHV infection on food consumption over a 7-d period. Both treatment (virus-infected) and control (saline-injected) flies were provided with a choice of 8% sucrose solution and 4% powdered milk solution to determine food preferences. Quantities of each

Sialodochitis fibrinosa managed with staged bilateral total parotidectomy.

OBJECTIVE: This paper reports a rare case of a 61-year-old man with sialodochitis fibrinosa. METHODS: Clinical case report and review of current literature. RESULTS: Sialodochitis fibrinosa is a diagnosis of exclusion and in many cases can be managed conservatively. Conservative management failed for this patient and he was managed successfully with staged bilateral total parotidectomy. CONCLUSION: Sialodochitis fibrinosa should be considered as a differential diagnosis of painful bilateral facial swelling. While conservative management is successful for many patients, staged bilateral tota

Unilateral submandibular gland aplasia with contralateral hypertrophy: an unusual neck mass.

The congenital absence of major salivary glands is an infrequent disorder, in which several glands are usually involved at the same time. Aplasia of unilateral submandibular (SM) gland is a very rare finding. Clinical presentation is variable. While some patients have no symptoms, others report difficulty in chewing and swallowing due to dry mouth, and even dental caries. Diagnosis of salivary gland aplasia can be made with a variety of imaging techniques, which include sonography, CT or MRI, sialography or isotope scans (technetium T99m-pertechnetate). We report the case of a 30-year-old man

The Effect of the Hypertrophy Virus (MdSGHV) on the Ultrastructure of the Salivary Glands of Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

The salivary glands of insects play a key role in the replication cycle and vectoring of viral pathogens. Consequently, Musca domestica (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) and the Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus (MdSGHV) serve as a model to study insect vectoring of viruses. A better understanding of the structural changes of the salivary glands by the virus will help obtain a better picture of the pathological impact the virus has on adult flies. The salivary glands are a primary route for viruses to enter a new host. As such, studying the viral effect on the salivary glands is particularly important a

Management Options for Sialadenosis.

Sialadenosis (sialosis) is a chronic, noninflammatory, nonneoplastic, bilateral, often painless enlargement of the salivary glands, most frequently affecting the parotid glands. Approximately 50% of cases are associated with an underlying disease process. The pathogenesis of sialadenosis is unknown but likely results from an autonomic neuropathy. The key to management is diagnosis and management of any poorly controlled underlying medical process.

Interactions Between Tsetse Endosymbionts and Glossina pallidipes Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus in Glossina Hosts.

Tsetse flies are the sole cyclic vector for trypanosomosis, the causative agent for human African trypanosomosis or sleeping sickness and African animal trypanosomosis or nagana. Tsetse population control is the most efficient strategy for animal trypanosomosis control. Among all tsetse control methods, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is one of the most powerful control tactics to suppress or eradicate tsetse flies. However, one of the challenges for the implementation of SIT is the mass production of target species. Tsetse flies have a highly regulated and defined microbial fauna composed

The discovery, distribution, and diversity of DNA viruses associated with Drosophila melanogaster in Europe.

Drosophila melanogaster is an important model for antiviral immunity in arthropods, but very few DNA viruses have been described from the family Drosophilidae. This deficiency limits our opportunity to use natural host-pathogen combinations in experimental studies, and may bias our understanding of the Drosophila virome. Here, we report fourteen DNA viruses detected in a metagenomic analysis of 6668 pool-sequenced Drosophila, sampled from forty-seven European locations between 2014 and 2016. These include three new nudiviruses, a new and divergent entomopoxvirus, a virus related to Leptopilina

Evolution of the strikingly diverse submandibular muscles in Anura.

The most ventral muscles of the head (the mm. submentalis, intermandibularis, and interhyoideus) provide support to the gular region and lift the buccal floor during ventilation and feeding. These muscles show limited variation in most gnathostomes, but in Anura they exhibit a surprising diversity. The few studies that have explored this character system highlighted its potential as a source of phylogenetic information. In this paper we explored the diversity of this character system studying specimens of 567 anuran species and reviewing published data to cover a total of 1321 species, belongi

Characterization and Tissue Tropism of Newly Identified Iflavirus and Negeviruses in Glossina morsitans morsitans Tsetse Flies.

Tsetse flies cause major health and economic problems as they transmit trypanosomes causing sleeping sickness in humans (Human African Trypanosomosis, HAT) and nagana in animals (African Animal Trypanosomosis, AAT). A solution to control the spread of these flies and their associated diseases is the implementation of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). For successful application of SIT, it is important to establish and maintain healthy insect colonies and produce flies with competitive fitness. However, mass production of tsetse is threatened by covert virus infections, such as the Glossina pa

Unilateral Submandibular Gland Aplasia Mimicking Nodal Metastasis.

Aplasia of salivary glands is rare and usually involves several major salivary glands. Isolated unilateral submandibular gland aplasia or aplasia accompanied by hypertrophy of contralateral submandibular gland or sublingual glands is a rare entity. The majority of cases are incidentally detected findings in asymptomatic patients; however, imaging findings may mimic mass-like lesions, posing diagnostic challenges in cancer patients. We presented 2 cases, a case with melanoma and an asymptomatic case, who had asymmetric lesion at left submandibular space, demonstrated to represent left submandib

Aquaporin locus (12q13.12) might contribute to susceptibility of temporomandibular joint disorder associated with periodontitis.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are membrane channels that provide for transport of water and other small molecules across the lipid bilayer of cells. Their function is essential for physiologic processes such as cell volume regulation, chondrocyte hypertrophy during appendicular skeletal growth, water reabsorption in the kidney tubules, and water excretion by the salivary glands. The ten AQP isoforms show tissue specificity and are involved in different pathologies and inflammatory diseases. This study addresses the hypothesis that arthritis, periodontitis, and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) can

Preexisting diabetes mellitus had no effect on the no-observed-adverse-effect-level of acetaminophen in rats.

Information on the safety of chemical substances in patients with various preexisting conditions remains limited. Acetaminophen was added to the basal diet at 0, 80, 253, 800, 2530, or 8000 ppm and administered to type 2 diabetes mellitus rats (GK/Jcl) and the control male rats (Wistar) for 13 weeks. Both strains treated with 8000 ppm acetaminophen (561.4 and 567.7 mg/kg body weight/day, GK/Jcl and Wistar rats, respectively) showed decreased levels of red blood cell counts, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and total bilirubin compared to those of non-treated rats. Treatment with 8000 ppm of ac
