Comparative Analysis of Salivary Gland Proteomes of Two Glossina Species that Exhibit Differential Hytrosavirus Pathologies.

Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV; family Hytrosaviridae) is a dsDNA virus exclusively pathogenic to tsetse flies (Diptera; Glossinidae). The 190 kb GpSGHV genome contains 160 open reading frames and encodes more than 60 confirmed proteins. The asymptomatic GpSGHV infection in flies can convert to symptomatic infection that is characterized by overt salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH). Flies with SGH show reduced general fitness and reproductive dysfunction. Although the occurrence of SGH is an exception rather than the rule, G. pallidipes is thought to be the most susc

Effects of Benzodiazepines on Acinar and Myoepithelial Cells.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines (BZDs), the most commonly prescribed psychotropic drugs with anxiolytic action, may cause hyposalivation. It has been previously shown that BZDs can cause hypertrophy and decrease the acini cell number. In this study, we investigated the effects of BZDs and pilocarpine on rat parotid glands, specifically on acinar, ductal, and myoepithelial cells. METHODS: Ninety male Wistar rats were divided into nine groups. Control groups received a saline solution for 30 days (C30) and 60 days (C60), and pilocarpine (PILO) for 60 days. Experimental groups received lorazepam (L3

Unilateral sublingual salivary gland hypertrophy with herniation through a boutonniére defect and contralateral sublingual gland hypoplasia.

A 74-year-old male attended our ear, nose and throat clinic with left-sided otalgia. MRI highlighted an area of abnormal signal in the region of the right mylohyoid muscle in the floor of the oral cavity. The patient was called back for a post-contrast MRI scan for clarification. Post-contrast MRI demonstrated a left-sided hypoplastic sublingual salivary gland and a hypertrophied right-sided sublingual salivary gland. The left sublingual gland hypoplasia had resulted in compensatory hypertrophy of the contralateral (right) sublingual salivary gland, extending through the mylohyoid gap or "bout

Simultaneous Bilateral Hypertrophies of the Parotid Gland and Masseter Muscle: Case Report.

Increased salivary demand can lead to enlarged parotid salivary glands, and increased activity of the masseter muscles can cause masseter hypertrophy. This report describes a most unusual case of simultaneous bilateral hypertrophies of the parotid gland and masseter muscle originating from the very extensive habit of chewing gum. An extensive literature review uncovered many cases of the independent existence of masseteric or parotid hypertrophy, but no example of the simultaneous occurrence of these 2 conditions.

[Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma mimicking Mikulicz disease: a case report].

IgG4-related disease is a systemic disorder involving a spectrum of multiple indications, and various histopathological features are shared among different IgG4-related disease subtypes, which challenge diagnosis, although certain syndromes have organ-specific involvement. Among them, Mikulicz's disease affecting the salivary and lacrimal glands, distinguished by often elevated levels of serum IgG4, infiltration of IgG4+ plasma cells into target tissues, and diffuse swelling, mass formation, or fibrosis of affected organs. However, there are several diseases, which could manifest as salivary g

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary glands arising in the epiglottis--a previously undocumented occurrence.

A 39-year-old female was referred to her local Ear, Nose, and Throat department with tonsillar hypertrophy. During intubation for a tonsillectomy, a mass was also noted on the epiglottis. Histopathologic examination showed this mass to be a cribriform adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary glands (CAMSG). As far as the authors are aware, a CAMSG has never been documented in the larynx.

Hydrolysable tannin fed to entire male pigs affects intestinal production, tissue deposition and hepatic clearance of skatole.

The effect of adding hydrolysable tannins to the diet of fattening boars was studied. Performance, reproductive organ weights, salivary gland morphology, boar taint compounds and skatole metabolism were evaluated. At 123 days of age and 52 ± 6 kg liveweight, 24 Landrace × Large White boars were assigned within a litter to four treatment groups: control (T0 fed mixture with 13.2 MJ/kg, 17.5% crude proteins) and three experimental diets for which the T0 diet was supplemented with 1%, 2% and 3% of hydrolysable tannin-rich extract (T1, T2 and T3, respectively). Pigs were kept individually with ad

Microbiome frequency and their association with trypanosome infection in male Glossina morsitans centralis of Western Zambia.

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are considered primary cyclical vectors that transmit pathogenic trypanosomes in Africa. They harbour a variety of microbes including Wolbachia, Sodalis and the salivary gland hypertrophy virus (SGHV) which are all vertically transmitted. Knowledge on tsetse microbiome and their interactions may identify novel strategies for tsetse fly and trypanosomiasis control. Area-wide application of such strategies requires an understanding of the natural microbiome frequency in the different species and subspecies of Glossina in their geographical populations. Consequ

Histological evaluation of the soft palate in dogs affected by brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome.

AIMS: To histologically examine tissue obtained from the thick rostral portion of the soft palate in severely affected brachycephalic dogs, and to quantitatively compare the histological findings with a similar region in control dogs. METHODS: Nine dogs examined for treatment of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) were prospectively recruited into the study. Four mesaticephalic dogs were also recruited following euthanasia for reasons unrelated to respiratory or gastrointestinal disease. Palatine tissue was harvested using an elliptical incision extending from the junction with

Disruption of the salivary gland muscle in tsetse, Glossina pallidipes Austen, as a result of salivary gland hypertrophy virus infection.

The secretory region of the salivary glands in Glossina pallidipes Austen (Diptera: Glossinidae) is characterized by an external muscle layer. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy investigations provide a detailed description of the longitudinal muscle fibres and a comparison of their structure when affected by salivary gland hypertrophy virus. The virus is responsible for hypertrophy of the salivary glands in symptomatic flies, specifically of the muscle fibres, the cytoarchitecture of which is completely altered. Although observations did not reveal viral particl

Gall-forming root-knot nematodes hijack key plant cellular functions to induce multinucleate and hypertrophied feeding cells.

Among plant-parasitic nematodes, the root-knot nematodes (RKNs) of the Meloidogyne spp. are the most economically important genus. RKN are root parasitic worms able to infect nearly all crop species and have a wide geographic distribution. During infection, RKNs establish and maintain an intimate relationship with the host plant. This includes the creation of a specialized nutritional structure composed of multinucleate and hypertrophied giant cells, which result from the redifferentiation of vascular root cells. Giant cells constitute the sole source of nutrients for the nematode and are esse

A Pilot Study on the Treatment of Posterior Cheek Enlargement in HIV+ Patients With Botulinum Toxin A.

BACKGROUND: Posterior cheek enlargement in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)+ individuals can lead to significant cosmetic disfigurement. Both parotid gland and masseter muscle overlie the mandibular ramus, contributing to lower facial contour. However, posterior cheek enlargement has not been well characterized anatomically. There are also limited treatment options. Botulinum toxin is a highly efficacious minimally invasive option for improving the shape of the lower face. OBJECTIVE: A pilot study was undertaken to better characterize posterior cheek enlargement in HIV+ patients and explore

Pitfalls in imaging the submandibular glands with PET/CT.

Imaging of the submandibular glands can provide vital information about malignant neoplastic processes. One of these modalities, fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT), has become very important in the detection of malignancies because it provides functional and metabolic information as well as anatomic localization. However, there are several pitfalls associated with FDG-PET/CT in terms of salivary gland imaging. For example, a normal increase in the uptake of radiotracer might be mistaken for a neoplastic process. Other routine findings m

[The oral cavity condition in patients with high blood pressure].

The incidence of high blood pressure in adults is estimated at ca. 30-40% of the general population. Both hypertension disease and hypertensive drugs affect the condition of the patients' oral cavity. A review of the current literature shows that disorders most frequently found in the masticatory organ of patients with hypertension include: xerostomia, changes in salivary glands, gum hypertrophy, lichenoid lesions, taste disorders, and paraesthesias. The authors emphasize that patients with high blood pressure, along with the treatment of the underlying disease, should receive prophylactic and
