Interwoven biology of the tsetse holobiont.

Microbial symbionts can be instrumental to the evolutionary success of their hosts. Here, we discuss medically significant tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae), a group comprised of over 30 species, and their use as a valuable model system to study the evolution of the holobiont (i.e., the host and associated microbes). We first describe the tsetse microbiota, which, despite its simplicity, harbors a diverse range of associations. The maternally transmitted microbes consistently include two Gammaproteobacteria, the obligate mutualists Wigglesworthia spp. and the commensal Sodalis glossinidius,

[Contribution of botulinum toxin to maxillo-facial surgery].

Botulinum toxin has a wide range of use in maxillo-facial surgery due to its action on muscles, on the glandular system, and against pain. It already has been given several market authorizations as indicated for: blepharospasm, spasmodic stiff neck, and glabellar lines. Furthermore, several studies are ongoing to prove its effectiveness and usefulness for many other pathologies: treatment of pain following cervical spine surgery; action on salivary glands after trauma, hypertrophy, or hyper-salivation; analgesic action (acknowledged but still being experimented) on neuralgia, articular pain, a

Deletion of ATG5 shows a role of autophagy in salivary homeostatic control.

Autophagy is a catabolic pathway utilized to maintain a balance among the synthesis, degradation, and recycling of cellular components, thereby playing a role in cell growth, development, and homeostasis. Previous studies revealed that a conditional knockout of essential member(s) of autophagy in a variety of tissues causes changes in structure and function of these tissues. Acinar cell-specific expression of knocked-in Cre recombinase through control of aquaporin 5 (Aqp5) promoter/enhancer (Aqp5-Cre) allows us to specifically inactivate Atg5, a protein necessary for autophagy, in salivary aci

Dynamic sonography and CT findings of unilateral submandibular gland agenesis associated with herniated hypertrophic sublingual gland.

Congenital agenesis of the submandibular gland is uncommon. We report dynamic sonography and CT findings of the unilateral submandibular gland agenesis associated with herniated hypertrophic sublingual gland tissue through the mylohyoid gap. The dynamic sonography examination applied at rest and during the modified Valsalva maneuver demonstrated hypertrophied sublingual gland prolapsing to the anterior part through the mylohyoid gap. This may be the first reported case describing dynamic sonography findings of this entity. CT confirmed the agenesis of the left submandibular gland and compensat

Bilateral masseter and internal pterygoid muscle hypertrophy: a diagnostic challenge.

OBJECTIVE: To describe an unusual case of bilateral masseter and pterygoid muscle hypertrophy. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 53-year-old female patient presented with a bilateral, painless swelling at the parotid areas without improvement after using antibiotics/systemic corticosteroids/nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents. Her medical history included thyroid nodules, but no dental/occlusal disorders were observed. The initial differential diagnosis included salivary gland/jaw bone/masseter pathology, but the CT/MRI revealed only an increase in the size of the masseter and ptery

Bilateral submandibular gland aplasia with hypertrophy of the sublingual glands of a patient with a cleft lip and palate: case report.

Aplasia of major salivary glands is a rare disorder with only a handful of cases reported in the literature. The cause of congenital absence of the salivary glands has not been determined, but it may be associated with ectodermal defects of the first and second branchial arches. Patients may be asymptomatic or may experience dysphagia, xerostomia, several periodontal disease, or multiple caries. There are few reports of patients with congenital gland aplasia with cleft lip and palate. We document the case of a 41-year-old patient with repaired unilateral cleft lip palate, bilateral submandibul

Effects of glucocorticoid on postnatal development of rat sublingual glands.

Hormones have been reported to be involved in salivary gland's growth and development, but few studies have investigated the effects of glucocorticoids on the morphology of the sublingual glands around the weaning period. The objective of this study was to ascertain the effects of glucocorticoid administration on rat sublingual glands around the weaning period. Male Wistar rats were administered triamcinolone, a glucocorticoid, once every other day from 8 days after birth (experimental group). A control group was given vehicle only. The sublingual glands were then extracted at 15, 20, 25, and

Tsetse fly microbiota: form and function.

Tsetse flies are the primary vectors of African trypanosomes, which cause Human and Animal African trypanosomiasis in 36 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. These flies have also established symbiotic associations with bacterial and viral microorganisms. Laboratory-reared tsetse flies harbor up to four vertically transmitted organisms-obligate Wigglesworthia, commensal Sodalis, parasitic Wolbachia and Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus (SGHV). Field-captured tsetse can harbor these symbionts as well as environmentally acquired commensal bacteria. This microbial community influences several aspects

Adaptive parotid gland hypertrophy induced by dietary treatment of GSE in rats.

In a 13-week feeding toxicity study of grape skin extract (GSE) performed previously, 5.0% GSE showed diffuse hypertrophy and basophilia in rat parotid glands. To clarify whether the change in the parotid glands was an adverse effect of GSE, 6-week-old male F344 rats were fed a diet containing 5.0% GSE or were administered a dose corresponding to the dietary concentration via gavage for 4 weeks, and the treatment was stopped for 2 weeks. To ascertain the effect of astringency, other animals were fed a diet containing 5.0% tannic acid (TA) using the same protocol as the GSE feed group. Control

Morphology and morphometry of the human sublingual glands in mouth floor enlargements of edentulous patients.

UNLABELLED: Asymptomatic mouth floor enlargements may be observed in edentulous patients. These masses, which protrude from the mouth floor, may complicate the fitting of dentures and require surgery. Whether this "entity" may be considered an anatomical variation of the mouth floor or represent specific alterations in the sublingual gland is not known. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to investigate the morphological and morphometric aspects of the sublingual glands of edentulous patients with mouth floor enlargements and compare the glands of these patients with the sublingual glands of h

CT and MR findings of bilateral submandibular gland aplasia associated with hypertrophied symmetrical sublingual glands herniated through mylohyoid defects.

There are very limited reports of aplasia of bilateral submandibular glands associated with bilateral sublingual gland hypertrophy. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl with bilateral submandibular gland aplasia associated with symmetrical sublingual gland hypertrophy that herniated from bilateral mylohyoid defects and presented as bilateral masses on CT and MRI images. Prolapsed bilateral sublingual gland hypertrophy should be considered in patients with bilateral submandibular masses to avoid unnecessary biopsy or surgery. We suggest that radiological evaluation of these cases should be

Analysis of the structural proteins from the Musca domestica hytrosavirus with an emphasis on the major envelope protein.

The Musca domestica hytrosavirus (MdHV), a member of the family Hyrosaviridae, is a large, dsDNA, enveloped virus that infects adult house flies and causes a diagnostic hypertrophy of the salivary gland. Herein, studies were directed at identifying key structural components of the viral envelope and nucleocapsid. SDS-PAGE of detergent-treated virus fractions identified protein bands unique to the envelope and nucleocapsid components. Using prior LC-MSMS data we identified the viral ORF associated with the major envelope band, cloned and expressed recombinant viral antigens, and prepared a seri

Hypertrophic pachymeningitis and tracheobronchial stenosis in IgG4-related disease: case presentation and literature review.

Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease is a distinctive mass-forming disorder with frequent systemic involvement, most commonly in the pancreas, salivary glands and lacrimal glands. A few cases of dural involvement and one case of central airway stenosis have also been described. We report here a rare case of IgG4-related disease with intracranial hypertrophic pachymeningitis and irregular tracheobronchial stenosis. We review four previously reported cases of IgG4-related pachymeningitis. We currently lack international standards for the diagnosis of extrapancreatic IgG4-related disease. Bas

Ultrastructure of the salivary glands of non-infected and infected glands in Glossina pallidipes by the salivary glands hypertrophy virus.

Light, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy analyses were conducted to examine the morphology and ultrastructure of the salivary glands of Glossina pallidipes. Three distinct regions, each with a characteristic composition and organization of tissues and cells, were identified: secretory, reabsorptive and proximal. When infected with the salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) virus, glands showed a severe hypertrophy, accompanied by profound changes in their morphology and ultrastructure. In addition, the muscular fibers surrounding the secretory region of the glands were disrupte

Implications of microfauna-host interactions for trypanosome transmission dynamics in Glossina fuscipes fuscipes in Uganda.

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are vectors for African trypanosomes (Euglenozoa: kinetoplastida), protozoan parasites that cause African trypanosomiasis in humans (HAT) and nagana in livestock. In addition to trypanosomes, two symbiotic bacteria (Wigglesworthia glossinidia and Sodalis glossinidius) and two parasitic microbes, Wolbachia and a salivary gland hypertrophy virus (SGHV), have been described in tsetse. Here we determined the prevalence of and coinfection dynamics between Wolbachia, trypanosomes, and SGHV in Glossina fuscipes fuscipes in Uganda over a large geographical scale spa

Safety evaluation of Evesse EPC, an apple polyphenol extract rich in flavan-3-ols.

The safety of the apple polyphenol extract EvesseEPC, which is rich in flavan-3-ols, particularly epicatechin, was evaluated. Both in a bacterial reverse mutation test and a mouse lymphoma assay, EvesseEPC showed a positive response in vitro. In vivo studies (UDS test in hepatocytes, bone marrow micronucleus test and comet assay in intestinal cells) were all negative and hence Evesse EPC is considered not to have genotoxic properties in vivo. In a 90-day study in rats, EvesseEPC was administered at dietary levels of 0%, 1.25%, 2% and 3.25%. Body weights were decreased in the high-dose group in
