Infected sialocele: complication in masseter reduction using radiofrequency coagulation.

Radiofrequency coagulation was introduced to reduce the volume of masseter muscle. Radiofrequency procedure causes focal necrosis in masseter muscles, which leads to muscle hypoplasia and a slender lower face. We present a case of a 24-year-old woman who underwent radiofrequency coagulation to reduce masseter muscles. The patient experienced progressive erythematous swelling and noticed the mass around the right cheek 5 days after the procedure. On radiologic evaluation, a round cavity of 4-cm diameter containing air and fluid was observed. Incision and drainage was performed, and antibiotics

Prevalence and genetic variation of salivary gland hypertrophy virus in wild populations of the tsetse fly Glossina pallidipes from southern and eastern Africa.

The Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV) is a rod-shaped, non-occluded double-stranded DNA virus that causes salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) and reduced fecundity in the tsetse fly G. pallidipes. High GpSGHV prevalence (up to 80%) makes it impossible to mass-rear G. pallidipes colonies for the sterile insect technique (SIT). To evaluate the feasibility of molecular-based GpSGHV management strategies, we investigated the prevalence and genetic diversity of GpSGHV in wild populations of G. pallidipes collected from ten geographical locations in eastern and southern Afri

The antiviral drug valacyclovir successfully suppresses salivary gland hypertrophy virus (SGHV) in laboratory colonies of Glossina pallidipes.

Many species of tsetse flies are infected with a virus that causes salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) symptoms associated with a reduced fecundity and fertility. A high prevalence of SGH has been correlated with the collapse of two laboratory colonies of Glossina pallidipes and colony maintenance problems in a mass rearing facility in Ethiopia. Mass-production of G. pallidipes is crucial for programs of tsetse control including the sterile insect technique (SIT), and therefore requires a management strategy for this virus. Based on the homology of DNA polymerase between salivary gland hypertroph

Improving Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) for tsetse flies through research on their symbionts and pathogens.

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are the cyclical vectors of the trypanosomes, which cause human African trypanosomosis (HAT) or sleeping sickness in humans and African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) or nagana in animals. Due to the lack of effective vaccines and inexpensive drugs for HAT, and the development of resistance of the trypanosomes against the available trypanocidal drugs, vector control remains the most efficient strategy for sustainable management of these diseases. Among the control methods used for tsetse flies, Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), in the frame of area-wide integrate

Phylogeny and evolution of Hytrosaviridae.

The Hytrosaviridae comprises a family of dsDNA viruses with a circular genome of 120-190 kb p. They are exclusively associated with Diptera, such as the tsetse fly, the house fly and the Narcissus bulb fly. Hytrosaviruses cause a very unique pathology including hypertrophy of salivary glands as well as testicular and ovarian malformation. On the other hand these viruses share a significant number of gene homologues with other dsDNA viruses, esp. baculoviruses and nudiviruses. These gene homologues include twelve so-called baculovirus core genes involved in transcription, DNA replication and th

Proteomic footprints of a member of Glossinavirus (Hytrosaviridae): an expeditious approach to virus control strategies in tsetse factories.

The Glossinavirus (Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV)) is a rod-shaped enveloped insect virus containing a 190,032 bp-long, circular dsDNA genome. The virus is pathogenic for the tsetse fly Glossina pallidipes and has been associated with the collapse of selected mass-reared colonies. Maintenance of productive fly colonies is critical to tsetse and trypanosomiasis eradication in sub-Saharan Africa using the Sterile Insect Technique. Proteomics, an approach to define the expressed protein complement of a genome, was used to further our understanding of the protein com

Muscavirus (MdSGHV) disease dynamics in house fly populations--how is this virus transmitted and has it potential as a biological control agent?

The newly classified family Hytrosaviridae comprises several double-stranded DNA viruses that have been isolated from various dipteran species. These viruses cause characteristic salivary gland hypertrophy and suppress gonad development in their hosts. One member, Muscavirus or MdSGHV, exclusively infects adult house flies (Musca domestica) and, owing to its massive reproduction in and release from the salivary glands, is believed to be transmitted orally among feeding flies. However, results from recent experiments suggest that additional transmission routes likely are involved in the mainten

Prevalence of SGHV among tsetse species of economic importance in Tanzania and their implication for SIT application.

Sterile Insect technique is an important component in area-wide integrated tsetse control. The presence of the salivary glands hypertrophy virus (SGHV) in the wild tsetse, which are the seeds for colony adaptations in the laboratory has become a stumbling block in establishing and maintaining colonies in the laboratory. The virus is transmitted both vertically (in the wild) and horizontally (in the laboratory). However, its prevalence is magnified in the laboratory as a result of the use of in vitro membrane feeding regimen. Fly species of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes, G. pallidipes, G. morsitan

Intercommunity effects on microbiome and GpSGHV density regulation in tsetse flies.

Tsetse flies have a highly regulated and defined microbial fauna made of 3 bacterial symbionts (obligate Wigglesworthia glossinidia, commensal Sodalis glossinidius and parasitic Wolbachia pipientis) in addition to a DNA virus (Glossina pallidipes Salivary gland Hypertrophy Virus, GpSGHV). It has been possible to rear flies in the absence of either Wigglesworthia or in totally aposymbiotic state by dietary supplementation of tsetse's bloodmeal. In the absence of Wigglesworthia, tsetse females are sterile, and adult progeny are immune compromised. The functional contributions for Sodalist are le

Impact of salivary gland hypertrophy virus infection on the mating success of male Glossina pallidipes: consequences for the sterile insect technique.

Many species of tsetse flies are infected by a virus (GpSGHV) that causes salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH). Female Glossina pallidipes (Austen) with SGH symptoms (SGH+) have reduced fecundity and SGH+ male G. pallidipes are unable to inseminate female flies. Consequently, G. pallidipes laboratory colonies with a high prevalence of SGH have been difficult to maintain and have collapsed on several occasions. To assess the potential impact of the release of SGH+ sterile male G. pallidipes on the efficacy of an integrated control programme with a sterile insect technique (SIT) component, we examin

Endobronchial hypertrophic seromucous salivary gland: a rare bronchial occlusion.

A 41-year-old woman came to our clinics describing increased cough and shortness of breath. A chest roentgenogram revealed a loss of volume in her right lung. Computed tomography revealed a lesion at the level of the main carina, clogging the right main bronchus almost totally. The lesion underwent biopsy by use of flexible bronchoscopy. Histopathologic evaluation showed that the specimen was a hypertrophic seromucous salivary-type gland. Total excision of the mass was performed by bronchotomy through a right thoracotomy. We describe this case of a hypertrophic seromucous salivary gland in the

Isoproterenol modulates matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and its tissue inhibitor-2 (TIMP-2) in rat parotid gland.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic isoproterenol treatment causes hypertrophy and hyperplasia of rodent salivary glands. Cell-extracellular matrix interactions play a critical role in salivary gland proliferation and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are known to be involved in cell proliferation. The present study was undertaken to investigate the expression of MMP-2 and the tissue inhibitor metalloproteinase (TIMP)-2 in rat parotid gland following isoproterenol treatment. DESIGN: Female Wistar rats were daily treated with isoproterenol (25mg/kg body weight) for 0, 1, 3, and 7 days. Expression of parotid gla

Agenesis of a submandibular gland with compensatory pseudotumoral hypertrophy of the contralateral gland: sonographic findings.

Agenesis of a submandibular gland with compensatory hypertrophy of the contralateral gland is an extremely rare disorder. Most reported cases of unilateral submandibular agenesis have been asymptomatic without any associated facial anomalies. We report a case of submandibular gland hypertrophy mimicking a mass that was detected incidentally. The absence of the contralateral submandibular gland and associated contralateral sublingual gland hypertrophy was confirmed by typical imaging findings.

Correlation between structure, protein composition, morphogenesis and cytopathology of Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus.

The Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV) is a dsDNA virus with rod-shaped, enveloped virions. Its 190 kb genome contains 160 putative protein-coding ORFs. Here, the structural components, protein composition and associated aspects of GpSGHV morphogenesis and cytopathology were investigated. Four morphologically distinct structures: the nucleocapsid, tegument, envelope and helical surface projections, were observed in purified GpSGHV virions by electron microscopy. Nucleocapsids were present in virogenic stroma within the nuclei of infected salivary gland cells, whereas

Cannulation of the mouse submandibular salivary gland via the Wharton's duct.

BACKGROUND: Daily rhythmicity has been observed for a number of hormonal and behavioral variables in mammals. It can be entrained by several external factors, such as light-dark cycle and scheduled feeding. In dromedary camels, daily rhythmicity has been documented only for melatonin secretion and body temperature. In this study, the daily rhythmicity of behavioral repertoire, cortisol and testosterone levels was investigated in captive male camels. METHODS: Six clinically healthy male dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) were used. The animals were housed in single boxes for 24 h daily and

Salivary gland hypertrophy viruses: a novel group of insect pathogenic viruses.

Salivary gland hypertrophy viruses (SGHVs) are a unique, unclassified group of entomopathogenic, double-stranded DNA viruses that have been reported from three genera of Diptera. These viruses replicate in nuclei of salivary gland cells in adult flies, inducing gland enlargement with little obvious external disease symptoms. Viral infection inhibits reproduction by suppressing vitellogenesis, causing testicular aberrations, and/or disrupting mating behavior. Historical and present research findings support a recent proposal of a new virus family, the Hytrosaviridae. This review describes the d

The genome of Oryctes rhinoceros nudivirus provides novel insight into the evolution of nuclear arthropod-specific large circular double-stranded DNA viruses.

The Oryctes rhinoceros nudivirus (OrNV) is a dsDNA virus with enveloped, rod-shaped virions. Its genome is 127,615 bp in size and contains 139 predicted protein-coding open reading frames (ORFs). In-depth genome sequence comparisons revealed a varying number of shared gene homologues, not only with other nudiviruses (NVs) and baculoviruses, but also with other arthropod-specific large dsDNA viruses, including the so-called Monodon baculovirus (MBV), the salivary gland hypertrophy viruses (SGHVs) and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). Nudivirus genomes contain 20 baculovirus core gene homologues

Two hytrosaviruses, MdSGHV and GpSGHV, induce distinct cytopathologies in their respective host insects.

Recently, a new virus family (Hytrosaviridae) was proposed for double-stranded DNA viruses that cause salivary gland hypertrophy in their dipteran hosts. The two type species, MdSGHV and GpSGHV, induce similar gross pathology and share several morphological, biological, and molecular characteristics. This histological study revealed profound differences in the cytopathology of these viruses supporting their previously proposed placement in different genera.
