Impact of photobiomodulation therapy on the morphological aspects of submandibular gland submitted to excretory duct ligation and hypothyroidism: an animal study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on histomorphological aspects of submandibular gland (SMG) submitted to salivary gland duct obstruction in hypothyroid rats. Fifty-six male Wistar rats (250 to 300 g) were divided into 4 groups (n = 14): euthyroid (EU), EU + PBMT, hypothyroid (HYPO), and HYPO + PBMT. Duct obstruction of the left submandibular gland (LSMG) was performed in all animals by a ligature procedure. For the induction of hypothyroidism, total thyroidectomy was performed. PBMT groups received irradiation with AlGaInP diode laser (808 n

Xerostomia in a patient with scrub typhus.

Scrub typhus is an acute febrile disease caused by the intracellular organism Orientia tsutsugamushi. The main pathogenesis is focal or disseminated multi-organ vasculitis caused by the infection of endothelial cells and the perivascular infiltration of leukocytes. Many studies have reported interstitial pneumonia, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, and meningoencephalitis in scrub typhus. However, there is no report about sialoadenitis in a patient with scrub typhus. A 79-year-old man was admitted to the emergency room due to a high fever, headache, and myalgia. Scrub typhus was confirmed based on

Development of GATE Monte Carlo Code for Simulation and Dosimetry of New I-125 Seeds in Eye Plaque Brachytherapy.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) contributes significantly to mortality, hospitalisations and health care costs worldwide. There is evidence that the detection, accurate diagnosis and management of COPD are currently suboptimal in primary care. Physiotherapists are well-trained in cardiorespiratory management and chronic care but are currently underutilised in primary care. A cardiorespiratory physiotherapist working in partnership with general practitioners (GPs) has the potential to improve quality of care for people with COPD. METHODS: A prospective pilot study will

Does infection of 2019 novel coronavirus cause acute and/or chronic sialadenitis?

2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is widespread in China and other countries. The target of 2019-nCoV and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) is angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) positive cells. ACE2 is present in the salivary gland duct epithelium, and thus it could be the target of 2019-nCoV and SARS-CoV. SARS-CoV-related animal model experiments show that it can infect the epithelial cells on the salivary gland duct in Chinese rhesus macaques by targeting ACE2. Clinical studies confirmed that 2019-nCoV and SARS-CoV could be detected in saliva of human patients. We

A Modified Technique in Submandubular Salivary Gland Excision: Preservation of Facial Artery.

Cutting and ligation of facial artery is the conventional practice for excision of submandibular gland. Facial artery is the main arterial supply to the lower face. Its preservation results in preservation of large proportion of vascularity to the lower face, preserves vascularity of platysma myocutaneous flap, allows repair of lower lip using Bernard's technique; facial artery is one of the most important recipient artery for microvascular free flap in modern reconstructive surgery in head and neck oncology. This prospective study was carried out in Department of Otolaryngology, Bangabandhu S

Protective Effect of Alpha-Lipoic Acid on Salivary Dysfunction in a Mouse Model of Radioiodine Therapy-Induced Sialoadenitis.

Radioiodine (RI) therapy is known to cause salivary gland (SG) dysfunction. The effects of antioxidants on RI-induced SG damage have not been well described. This study was performed to investigate the radioprotective effects of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) administered prior to RI therapy in a mouse model of RI-induced sialadenitis. Four-week-old female C57BL/6 mice were divided into four groups (n = 10 per group): group I, normal control; group II, ALA alone (100 mg/kg); group III, RI alone (0.01 mCi/g body weight, orally); and group IV, ALA + RI (ALA at 100 mg/kg, 24 h and 30 min before RI expos

A retrospective study of salivary gland diseases in 179 dogs (2010-2018).

Salivary gland diseases are well characterized in human medicine but are uncommonly reported in dogs. Herein we describe the clinical and pathologic features of 179 canine salivary gland biopsy submissions to the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory from 2010 to 2018. The mean age of affected dogs was 8.5 y; no sex or breed predisposition was evident. The main reason for sample submission was regional swelling (107 cases; 59.7%). Extraoral (major) salivary glands were affected in 125 cases (69.8%), and oral (minor) salivary glands were affected in 43 cases (24% of cases). The location of th

JCAD expression and localization in human blood endothelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Junctional Cadherin 5 Associated (JCAD) is an endothelial, cell-cell junction protein, and its expression is associated with cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis and hypertension. However, to date, there are few studies confirming JCAD expression and precise localization in human tissues by immunohistochemical staining. METHODS: JCAD expression and localization was assessed in four human submandibular gland (SMG) specimens by immunohistochemical staining. One specimen of SMG with sialoadenitis was accompanied by severe inflammation and fibrosis, while the other was la

Review of a novel disease entity, immunoglobulin G4-related disease.

Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related dacryoadenitis and sialoadenitis (IgG4-DS) are part of a multiorgan fibroinflammatory condition of unknown etiology termed IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), which has been recognized as a single diagnostic entity for less than 15 years. Histopathologic examination is critical for diagnosis of IgG4-RD. CD4+ T and B cells, including IgG4-expressing plasma cells, constitute the major inflammatory cell populations in IgG4-RD and are thought to cause organ damage and tissue fibrosis. Patients with IgG4-RD who have active, untreated disease exhibit significant increase

CD226 Deletion Reduces Type 1 Diabetes in the NOD Mouse by Impairing Thymocyte Development and Peripheral T Cell Activation.

The costimulatory molecule CD226 is highly expressed on effector/memory T cells and natural killer cells. Costimulatory signals received by T cells can impact both central and peripheral tolerance mechanisms. Genetic polymorphisms in CD226 have been associated with susceptibility to type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. We hypothesized that genetic deletion of Cd226 in the non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse would impact type 1 diabetes incidence by altering T cell activation. CD226 knockout (KO) NOD mice displayed decreased disease incidence and insulitis in comparison to wild-type (WT) c

Sjögren's-like syndrome in a dog.

A neutered male Golden Retriever was referred with a 2-week history of dry mouth. Multiple and bilateral enlargement of the lacrimal and salivary glands showing heterogeneous internal enhancement was identified on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). Ultrasonographic examination detected multifocal hypoechoic areas within the swollen submandibular salivary glands, which were histopathologically diagnosed as lymphoplasmacytic sialoadenitis. As both imaging and histopathological findings were in accordance with those in human Sjögren's syndrome, a provisional diagnosis of Sjögren's-like s

Hyperglycemia and Salivary Gland Dysfunction in the Non-obese Diabetic Mouse: Caveats for Preclinical Studies in Sjögren's Syndrome.

The Non-obese Diabetic (NOD) mouse model for type I diabetes also develops some features of Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Since the source of the mice and the environment exert a strong influence on diabetes, this study investigated SS development in NOD mice obtained from two vendors. Female NOD mice from The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) and Taconic Biosciences were monitored for blood glucose and pilocarpine-induced salivation. The gut microbiome was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing of stool DNA. At euthanasia, serum cytokines and sialoadenitis severity were evaluated. The onset of diabetes was signif
