Facial Nerve Palsy Secondary to Parotid Abscess: Report of a Rare Case and Review of the Literature.

A parotid lesion with facial nerve involvement almost always indicates malignancy. Facial nerve palsy as a complication of parotid abscess is extremely rare. The postulated mechanisms include ischaemic neuropathy secondary to the compression of the facial nerve by the parotid swelling, local toxic effect and perineuritis from the inflammatory process. Here, we present our experience in managing a case of facial nerve palsy due to a parotid abscess in an otherwise healthy 44-year-old female. The abscess was drained surgically and the facial nerve function returned to normal at two months. Histo

COVID-19-associated Parotid Gland Abscess.

BACKGROUND: Human infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused a pandemic characterized by a plethora of diseases, of which those affecting the internal organs and nervous system can have severe, life-threatening consequences. Among the manifestations of the disease at the viral entry site, diseases in oral mucosa adnexa are rarely reported. This case report describes a COVID-19-associated aggravating parotid gland disease. CASE REPORT: The 47-year-old, SARS-CoV-2-positive male patient, already hospitalized and now in need of ventilation, had been referred for intensive care treatment due t

Connections between Exoproteome Heterogeneity and Virulence in the Oral Pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen associated with severe periodontitis and nonoral diseases. Clinical isolates of A. actinomycetemcomitans display a rough (R) colony phenotype with strong adherent properties. Upon prolonged culturing, nonadherent strains with a smooth (S) colony phenotype emerge. To date, most virulence studies on A. actinomycetemcomitans have been performed with S strains of A. actinomycetemcomitans, whereas the virulence of clinical R isolates has received relatively little attention. Since the extracellular proteome is the main bact

Bilateral Candidal abscess of the parotid gland: A case report and literature review.

We report the case of a 75-year-old diabetic man who developed a bilateral abscess of the parotid gland. Although a bacterial parotitis was first suspected, cultures of fine-needle aspiration identified Candida albicans as the causal agent. Failure of medical treatment led us to perform a surgical drainage of the right abscess. The patient was then treated with oral fluconazole for 6 weeks, with complete recovery during follow-up. Of interest, the patient had a history of right superficial parotidectomy for a benign tumor 30 years ago. Despite the high prevalence of oral carriage, fungal absce

Granulomatous infection of parotid gland and its subcutaneous tissue by Mycobacterium abscessus subspecies massiliense in a 3-year-old child.

Acid fast bacilli positive granulomatous infections by non-tubrerculous mycobacteria are often misdiagnosed as tuberculosis. We present a case of parotid gland infection and abscess in the subcutaneous tissue over the gland which was suspected as tuberculosis by ultrasonogram and histopathology examinations. Mycobacterium abscessus subspecies massiliense was isolated and identified. In addition to the severe pulmonary infections, M.abscessus organism sometimes produces granulomatous reaction in extra pulmonary sites as the conventional anti tuberculous treatment is not useful, the correct iden

Minor salivary gland infection as origin of peritonsillitis - novel theory and preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Peritonsillitis (PT) is defined as cellulitis in peritonsillar tissue without pus. The pathogenesis of peritonsillar infections is controversial. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether minor salivary glands are involved in the development of PT and to identify clinical findings that predict the evolution of PT to peritonsillar abscess (PTA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included 146 adult patients treated for acute tonsillitis (AT; n = 54), PT (n = 34), or PTA (n = 58) at the Helsinki University Hospital. The treating physician recorded tonsillar, oropharyngeal, and dental findings. We analys

Contemporary Review of Submandibular Gland Sialolithiasis and Surgical Management Options.

One of the most common disorders of the salivary glands is obstructive sialolithiasis. Salivary gland obstruction is important to address, as it can significantly impact patient quality of life and can progress to extensive cellulitis and abscess formation if left untreated. For small and accessible stones, conservative therapies often produce satisfactory outcomes. Operative management should be considered when stones are inaccessible or larger in size, and options include sialendoscopy, laser lithotripsy, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy, transoral surgery, and submandibular gland adenec

Combination stem cell therapy using dental pulp stem cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells for critical hindlimb ischemia.

Robot-mediated therapies enhance the recovery of post-stroke patients with motor deficits. Repetitive and repeatable exercises are essential for rehabilitation following brain damage or other disorders that impact the central nervous system, as plasticity permits to reorganize its neural structure, fostering motor relearning. Despite the fact that so many studies claim the validity of robot-mediated therapy in post-stroke patient rehabilitation, it is still difficult to assess to what extent its adoption improves the efficacy of traditional therapy in daily life, and also because most of the s

Rare case of tubercular parotid abscess.

Acute parotitis progressing to parotid abscess is rare in children. Staphylococcus aureus is the usual pathogen in parotid abscess. Granulomatous parotid abscess due to tubercular aetiology is extremely rare. Authors report a case of chronic parotid abscess in a child who received multiple courses of antibiotics without any cure. The ultrasonography and CT scan of the parotid gland confirmed the extent of parotid abscess and the changes in the parotid lymph nodes. The surgical drainage and the biopsy of the lymph nodes lead to the diagnosis of granulomatous abscess. The antitubercular therapy

A comparative study of Kimura's disease and IgG4-related disease: similarities, differences and overlapping features.

AIMS: To compare the fibroinflammatory diseases Kimura's disease (KD) and immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-related disease (IgG4RD) and to explore their possible relationship. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-six cases of KD and 29 IgG4RD from our institution diagnosed from 2011 to 2020 were studied. They were compared with each other on clinical, pathological and immunohistological features. There were similar clinical features, except that IgG4RD affected an older patient population, with more frequent salivary gland involvement and KD affected head and neck lymph nodes, and showed blood eosinophilia more f

[Small salivary glands in the paratonsillar space in children].

Was to study the changes in the small salivary glands in chronic tonsillitis and paratonsillar abscess in children. A histological examination of the palatine tonsils of 22 children aged 5 to 14 years old who had a paratonsillar abscess and 18 children suffering from chronic tonsillitis was carried out. Fragments of small salivary glands, located both superficially, in the mucous membrane between the stratified squamous non-keratinizing epithelium and the lymphoid tissue of the palatine tonsils, and between the muscles of the amygdala were found in 42 of the 80 (52.5%) tonsils studied. Abscess Associated with Sialolith in a Parotid Duct - A Case Report.

RATIONALE: The aim of this work is to describe the case of a large abscess associated with a sialolith in the parotid duct. PATIENT CONCERNS: Patient's concern is evident in this pathology, because infection untreated or rapidly spreading infections can be potentially life-threatening secondary to airway compromise or septicemia. DIAGNOSIS: Clinical examination, ultrasonography of the region, and cone beam computed tomography were requested to confirm the diagnosis of a sialolith associated with a large abscess. TREATMENT: Antibiotic therapy with extraoral drainage was performed. After remi

Sialolithiasis of minor salivary gland: a challenging diagnostic dilemma.

Minor salivary gland sialolithiasis (MSGS) is a not uncommon oral mucosal disease. Its clinical appearance may mimic a mucocyst or other benign submucosal overgrowth. Stasis of saliva, which accompanies MSGS, usually results in minor salivary gland inflammation, with a chronic sialadenitis appearance. MSGS typically is a painless lesion but can become painful when the salivary gland parenchyma or excretory duct becomes infected, with or without pus. However, misdiagnosis of this condition is rather common, as the clinical appearance is asymptomatic. The most common location is the upper lip, a

Fine-needle aspiration to improve diagnosis of melioidosis of the head and neck in children: a study from Sarawak, Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis, the infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, is associated with a high case fatality rate, due in part to difficulties in clinical recognition and diagnostic confirmation of the disease. Although head and neck involvement is common in children, specific disease manifestations differ between geographic regions. The aim of this study was to provide a detailed description of melioidosis of the head and neck among children in Sarawak, Malaysia, and determine if fine-needle aspiration of suspected head or neck lesions could improve melioidosis diagnosis. METHODS: We

Pathology Associated With Streptococcus spp. Infection in Baboons (Papio spp.).

Streptococcus spp. are a source of morbidity and mortality in captive nonhuman primate populations. However, little is known about the lesions associated with naturally occurring streptococcal infections in baboons (Papio spp.). The pathology database of the Southwest National Primate Research Center was searched for all baboon autopsies from 1988 to 2018 in which Streptococcus spp. were cultured. Baboons on experimental protocol were excluded. The gross autopsy and histopathology reports were reviewed. Archived specimens were retrieved and reviewed as needed for confirmation or clarification.
