Percutaneous CT-Guided Cryoablation of the Salivary Glands in a Porcine Model.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the imaging, histologic changes and safety of computed tomography (CT)-guided cryoablation of the parotid glands in a porcine model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unilateral CT-guided parotid gland cryoablation was performed in 5 juvenile miniature pigs. The ablated parotid glands underwent 2 cycles of 10-minute freeze and 5-minute thaw using three 17-g cryoprobes. The animals were monitored daily for complications including pain, frostbite, infection, and sialocele or fistula formation. Follow-up CT was performed at 6 weeks postcryoablation. Pathologic evaluation was performed

[A Case of HIV-associated Salivary Gland Disease (HSD) Presenting with Bilateral Parotid Abscesses].

HIV-associated salivary gland disease (HSD) is one of the initial symptoms of HIV infection. HSD occurs in about 5%~10% HIV patients. Usually, HSD shows multilocular soft cystic lesions in parotid glands; however, it does not show bilateral parotid abscesses. We report the case of a 32-year-old man with HIV infection that initially presented as bilateral parotid abscesses. He came to our hospital with a 1-week history of bilateral parotid swelling. He did not have a history of HIV infection, diabetes mellitus, or tuberculosis infection. We performed incision and drainage, bacterial culture, an

Acute neonatal parotid abscess: A rare case report.

Acute suppurative parotitis is uncommon in children and is very rare in neonates. Most common organism isolated is Staphylococcus aureus. We present a 15-day-old full-term breast-fed female neonate with left-sided acute parotid abscess. The baby presented with a left preauricular swelling, pain and redness. Pus was exuded from left Stensen's duct on compression of the gland externally. Early diagnosis and proper intravenous antibiotics are the keys to the treatment.

Mucoceles of minor salivary glands in children. Own clinical observations.

INTRODUCTION: Mucoceles are benign lesions associated with the pathology of the oral mucosa of minor salivary glands. Two types of cysts are distinguished depending on their pathogenesis. Most often they occur as a result of mechanical trauma and mucus extravasation into tissues or obstruction of the gland ducts. AIM: The aim of the study was to present our own experiences regarding mucoceles of minor salivary glands in the oral cavity taking into account how frequently the individual types of cysts occur in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research was carried out based on medical files

Diagnostic imaging of benign and malignant neck masses in children-a pictorial review.

Neck masses are frequently encountered in pediatric medicine, and can present a diagnostic dilemma for the clinicians involved. There are several means by which neck masses in children can be subdivided, for example by age at presentation, anatomical location including compartments and fascia of the neck, their classical appearance when imaged, or by etiology. When imaging children the clinicians must be mindful of radiation exposure and as such ultrasound (US) is often attempted first. Cross sectional imaging can be helpful for problem solving with CT being particularly useful for assessing t

Mumps Presenting as a Parotid Abscess.

Parotid abscess is an uncommon condition in infants. It is frequently associated with prematurity, prolonged gavage feeding, and dehydration. Mumps is a viral disease caused by paramyxovirus. It frequently involves the parotid gland and is only rarely found in the pancreas, testis, or brain. The authors describe a rare case of a 10-month-old infant with mumps who developed the classical manifestations of unilateral acute parotitis progressing to formation of a parotid abscess that responded to 2 rounds of surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy.

Deep neck infections originating from the major salivary glands.

OBJECTIVES: Before the widespread use of antibiotics, most deep neck infections (DNIs) stemmed from complicated pharyngeal infections. Nowadays, they seem to be due mainly to dental infections. In 2010, our group reported that DNIs originated from a major salivary gland in 14% of cases. The main endpoint of the present investigation was to review our experience of the diagnosis and treatment of DNIs of salivary gland origin. We also compared the characteristics of DNIs originating from salivary glands with those originating elsewhere. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2011, 44 patients were treated f

Management of Orbital Diseases.

Orbital diseases are common in dogs and cats and can present on emergency due to the acute onset of many of these issues. The difficulty with diagnosis and therapy of orbital disease is that the location of the problem is not readily visible. The focus of this article is on recognizing classical clinical presentations of orbital disease, which are typically exophthalmos, strabismus, enophthalmos, proptosis, or intraconal swelling. After the orbital disease is confirmed, certain characteristics such as pain on opening the mouth, acute vs. chronic swelling, and involvement of nearby structures c

Deep Neck Space Infections: A Study of 76 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Deep neck space infections (DNSI) are serious diseases that involve several spaces in the neck. The common primary sources of DNSI are dental infections, tonsillar and salivary gland infections, malignancies, and foreign bodies. With widespread use of antibiotics, the prevalence of DNSI has been reduced. Common complications of DNSI include airway obstruction, jugular vein thrombosis, and sepsis. Treatment principally comprises airway management, antibiotic therapy, and surgical intervention. This study was conducted to investigate the age and sex distribution of patients, sympto

Polymorphous Low-Grade Adenocarcinoma of the Palate: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) has been known as a comparatively less aggressive malignant tumor that predominantly occurs in the minor salivary glands. It has presented as a painless, slow growing tumor in the oral cavity. It has been reported to occur rarely in the palate and the prognosis of this lesion is far better than adenocarcinoma as the regional metastasis would be very minimal. A clear difference between the biologic behaviors of adenocarcinoma and PLGA has been reported in literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old female reported at our institute wit

[Tongue abscess].

Tongue abscess is a rare and sometimes life-threatening condition, as swelling of the tongue may rapidly occlude the airways. In a patient described by us swelling of the tongue was found in MR imaging to be caused by an abscess of the anterior part of the tongue, extending to the floor of the mouth, beside the submandibular gland. It was only after recanalization of the compartmentalized abscess of the tongue and removal of the salivary gland that the patient recovered.

[Case report of granulomatous necrotizing sialadenitis. Rarity of first manifestation in submandibular gland].

This article presents the case of a 43-year-old male patient with recurrent painful swelling of the right submandibular gland. Submandibulectomy was performed. Histological investigations showed an intense granulomatous inflammation with severe destruction of the parenchyma. The inflammatory infiltrate consisted of abscesses with neutrophilic and eosinophilic granulocytes and ill-defined granulomas with multinucleated giant cells. Some of the blood vessels showed evidence of vasculitis. After further clinical and serological investigations with highly elevated levels of cytoplasmic antineutrop
