Suppurative involvement of salivary gland in neonates is a rare disorder. Parotid gland being the most commonly involved. We described a case of suppurative parotitis leading to abscess formation and subsequent involvement of the submandibular gland. Incision and drainage of the abscess was performed, most of the purulent material was drained. Symptoms and signs resolved within 2 days. Pus culture grew Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: Minor salivary gland tumors in children are uncommon. However, despite the low overall incidence, there is a high incidence of malignancy in these young patients which is reported to be above 50 %, with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) predominating. We hope that this case report will contribute to the enlightenment of the behavior and prognosis of pediatric MEC of palatal minor salivary gland tumors.
CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old girl was admitted to our center with a histologically confirmed MEC of the left hard palate. Primary incision for drainage of a supposed abscess and secondary

OBJECTIVES: Pus of peritonsillar abscess (PTA) contains very high amylase levels in some patients. The objective of this study was to further test this finding and to check whether high amylase levels in peritonsillar abscess originate from contamination by saliva during aspiration.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Tertiary care university hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: The study includes 64 patients with PTA, 8 patients with a neck abscess and 12 patients with a dental abscess.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Amylase levels of pus and serum were compared between the groups. Clinical data regardin

BACKGROUND: Although ultrasound is regarded as the first choice imaging modality for evaluating a pediatric neck mass, neck computed tomography (CT) is necessary for urgent surgical conditions such as deep neck infections. Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness of and proper patient selection for neck CT as a method for the initial evaluation of pediatric neck masses in the emergency department.
METHODS: We analyzed the medical records of 105 pediatric patients who visited the emergency department with neck mass whose initial imaging work-up was a neck CT and who visited the eme

UNLABELLED: Brain cholinergic function has been previously studied with PET but little effort has been devoted to imaging peripheral organs. Many disorders, including diabetes and Parkinson disease, are associated with autonomic dysfunction including parasympathetic denervation. Nonneuronal cholinergic signaling is also involved in immune responses to infections and in cancer pathogenesis. 5-(11)C-methoxy-donepezil, a noncompetitive acetylcholinesterase ligand, was previously validated for imaging cerebral levels of acetylcholinesterase. In the present study, we explored the utility of (11)C-d

BACKGROUND: Sialolithiasis with salivary gland obstruction can mimic more frequently occurring illnesses such as facial and dental infection and abscess. It is often difficult to discern the etiology of facial pain and swelling on physical examination alone, requiring advanced imaging in the emergency department.
CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 37-year-old man who presented with 5 days of worsening unilateral facial pain and swelling. Use of bedside emergency ultrasound by an emergency physician (EP) led to an appropriate diagnosis of parotid duct sialolithiasis. Why Should an Emergenc

Sialolithiasis is the presence of stones in the ducts of the salivary glands. Most episodes are unique, and 60-80% are located exclusively in the main excretory duct. The main clinical manifestations are swelling and pain typically before, during or after meals that decreases if the obstruction is not complete. The highest prevalence of lithiasis is in the submandibular gland -87%-, whose secretion is more viscous, followed by the parotid gland -10%- and finally the sublingual gland -3%-. The most significant consequences are caused by the prolonged blockage of the duct by a stone, which can p

Sialolithiasis is defined as calcified stone(s) in the salivary duct or glands. Submandibular gland sialolithiasis is the most common (80 to 90%), followed by parotid gland sialolithiasis (5 to 15%). The typical clinical presentation is salivary gland swelling after eating. As the swelling persists, symptoms owing to local inflammation, such as pain and trismus, emerge. In severe cases, cellulitis and even abscess formation occur and subsequently lead to salivary gland atrophy or fistula formation if the sialolithiasis remains untreated. The most common treatment is complete excision of the af

Epidermoid cysts are lesions, which form as a result of implantation of the epidermis in the layers of the dermis or the mucous membrane. The lesions are rare in adults with 7% occurring in the head and neck area and most often located in the submental region. In children population submental epidermoid cysts are extremely rare. The differential diagnosis of the lesions is necessary as it affects the choice of treatment methods. Among the pathological conditions occurring in that region, salivary retention cyst (ranula), thyroglossal duct cyst, vascular lymphatic malformation (cystic hygroma),

Neck masses in children usually fall into one of three categories: developmental, inflammatory/reactive, or neoplastic. Common congenital developmental masses in the neck include thyroglossal duct cysts, branchial cleft cysts, dermoid cysts, vascular malformations, and hemangiomas. Inflammatory neck masses can be the result of reactive lymphadenopathy, infectious lymphadenitis (viral, staphylococcal, and mycobacterial infections; cat-scratch disease), or Kawasaki disease. Common benign neoplastic lesions include pilomatrixomas, lipomas, fibromas, neurofibromas, and salivary gland tumors. Altho

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia pseudomallei. Melioidosis is endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. An important risk factor for the development of melioidosis is the presence of diabetes mellitus, which may increase the relative risk of infection by as much as 100-fold. We report a rare case of melioidosis of the parotid and submandibular gland with coexisting diabetes. This was successfully managed conservatively with intravenous ceftazidime followed by trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and doxycycline.

Submental endotracheal intubation, as compared to the use of tracheotomy, is an alternative for the surgical management of maxillofacial trauma, as described by Altemir FH (The submental route for endotracheal intubation: a new technique. J Maxillofac Surg 1986; 14: 64). Although the submental endotracheal intubation is a useful technique, a wide range of complications have been reported in the literature. The core aim of this article is to present additional data from 17 patients who have undergone submental endotracheal intubation and who have received at least 6 months of postoperative foll

Neck masses can be classified into three main categories: congenital, inflammatory and neoplastic. Our aim was to determine the distribution of diagnosis in patients who were followed-up for a neck mass and had undergone surgery for diagnostic indications. Six hundred and thirty cases referred to the Otorhinolaryngology and Head Neck Surgery Department of Haseki Research and Training Hospital between January 2005 and February 2012 with a neck mass who underwent excisional or incisional biopsy to establish a histopathologic diagnosis were retrospectively evaluated. Patients with a diagnosis of

Palatal swellings are rare in children and the incidence differs from that of the adult counterparts. When the palatal swellings do arise in children, they usually are palatal abscess from periapical region, and few cases like pleomorphic adenoma in young adults have also been reported. But inflammatory fibrosis of palate in children is a rare occurrence. Inflammatory fibrosis is formation of excess fibrous connective tissue in an organ or tissue, as a reparative or reactive process. This report describes an unusual case of iatrogenic inflammatory fibrosis on the palate due to extraction of to
