A sialo-cutaneous fistula is a communication between the skin and a salivary gland or duct discharging saliva. Trauma and iatrogenic complications are the most common causes of this condition. Treatments include aspiration, compression, and the administration of systemic anticholinergics; however, their effects are transient and unsatisfactory in most cases. We had a case of a patient who developed an iatrogenic sialo-cutaneous fistula after wide excision of squamous cell carcinoma in the parotid region that was not treated with conventional management, but instead completely resolved with the

PURPOSE: To evaluate the imaging, histologic changes and safety of computed tomography (CT)-guided cryoablation of the parotid glands in a porcine model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unilateral CT-guided parotid gland cryoablation was performed in 5 juvenile miniature pigs. The ablated parotid glands underwent 2 cycles of 10-minute freeze and 5-minute thaw using three 17-g cryoprobes. The animals were monitored daily for complications including pain, frostbite, infection, and sialocele or fistula formation. Follow-up CT was performed at 6 weeks postcryoablation. Pathologic evaluation was performed

Parotid gland sialolithiasis is an uncommon condition that can cause pain and recurrent infection in affected patients. Migration of a stone through a fistula is a rare but possible complication of untreated sialolithiasis. We present a case of parotid gland sialolithiasis in a 63-year-old woman with recurrent episodes of parotitis and facial pain, which resolved through spontaneous extrusion of the stone (11 mm) through a cutaneous fistula while awaiting surgery. Management is typically conservative or surgical, depending on the location and size of the stone, and the clinical presentation.

IMPORTANCE: Submandibular fistula is a rare condition that presents diagnostic and treatment challenges. Accurate diagnosis may be achieved by means of thorough physical examination, proper imaging, and usually surgical exploration. We describe the clinical significance of aberrant submandibular ductal fistula or ostium and discuss our dilemmas during sialendoscopy in 2 patients with repeated submandibular glandular swelling.
OBSERVATIONS: Two patients had submandibular ductal abnormalities. The first patient was found to have the ostium of the submandibular duct in an unusual anatomical loca

A 17 years old male patient presented with continuous flow of clear watery discharge from his right cheek for 14 years following trauma. He had previous history of two surgical interventions but result was not satisfactory. The diagnosis was parotid fistula & sialocele based on clinical examination & investigation. To repair this fistula we entered the sialocele cavity where saliva was accumulated between the superficial fascia & parotid fascia, then one end of feeding tube (5Fr) was placed at the bottom of the cavity and another end was fixed intra-orally to create a controlled fistula. After

A 24-year-old male was referred to our department with intermittent clear drainage in both sides of the middle neck that did not increase while eating. On physical examination, there were fistulas in both sides of the neck, anterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscles. Fistulography revealed a 9-mm-long sinus from the left fistula, extending in the medial-caudal direction. On the right side, cannulation was not possible. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed on both sides, and the pathological examination revealed heterotopic salivary gland tissue (HSGT). From a literature review of rep

Tuberculosis (TB) can affect almost any organ of the body; however, TB of the salivary glands is a rare condition. The purpose of this paper was to report a case of a 14-year-old boy who presented with a painless swelling and discharging sinus in the parotid gland and cervical region on the left side. There was no clinical evidence of systemic signs and symptoms of active TB elsewhere in the body. The combination of clinical suspicion, a positive family history, and the cytological findings confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was successfully treated via antitubercular therapy for six months.

INTRODUCTION: Pharyngocutaneous fistula after larynx and hypopharynx cancer surgery can cause several damages. This study's aim was to derive a clinical decision rule to predict pharyngocutaneous fistula development after pharyngolaryngeal cancer surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including all patients performing total laryngectomy/pharyngolaryngectomy (n=171). Association between pertinent variables and pharyngocutaneous fistula development was assessed and a predictive model proposed.
RESULTS: American Society of Anesthesiologists scale, chemoradiotherapy, and t

PURPOSE: Modified endoscopically assisted resection of benign tumors in the accessory parotid gland region (APGR) has been reported, and the surgery confers a potential risk of injury to the great auricular nerve. This clinical research study provides an updated approach for the resection of benign tumors of the APGR.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen cases diagnosed with primary benign tumors in the APGR were treated by endoscopically assisted resection through a margin of the tragus, and its feasibility was evaluated.
RESULTS: All tumors were completely resected. The procedures lasted 45 to 7

The foramen tympanicum is an anatomical variation that is created in the tympanic plate of temporal bone during the first year of life. The tympanic plate grows and foramen tympanicum is gradually closed by about the fifth postnatal year. However, due to a defect in normal ossification, foramen tympanicum sporadically remains throughout life. The construction of a shopping center in Tabriz, northwest of Iran, led to the discovery of an Iron Age cemetery (1500-500 BC). Several tombs have been uncovered below one meter of sterile soil so far and a thick level of architectural debris from the med

Malignant tumours of the submandibular salivary glands are rare entities. Most common malignant tumour of submandibular gland is mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Histological finding of squamous cell carcinoma is very rare in submandibular salivary gland. Metastasis from distant primary squamous malignancy, direct invasion from cutaneous or mucosal squamous carcinoma, squamous component of mucoepidermoid carcinoma or primary squamous cell carcinoma of salivary origin are some of the possible causes. Of these, the latter is distinctly uncommon. Primary squamous malignancy is diagnosed only after rulin

BACKGROUND: Congenital cervical salivary duct fistulae are rare entities and can mimic branchial cleft fistulae. Ectopic salivary tissue associated with these pharyngocervical tracts may have malignant potential.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a case report of a novel surgical approach and review of the literature. A 27-year-old man presented with complaint of drainage from the right side of his neck since early childhood. A tract was found from the posterior tonsillar pillar into the neck and ectopic salivary tissue was found along the tract. A congenital hearing loss was also present. Tran

PURPOSE: Although negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) for complicated wounds has been extensively studied, it is rarely used in cases involving a submandibular fistula due to radiation-induced osteoradionecrosis of the mandible. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of NPWT for submandibular fistulas after reconstruction for osteoradionecrosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nine patients with submandibular fistulas after reconstruction for osteoradionecrosis treated with NPWT between 2011 and 2014 were included in the study. The wound healing was documented.
RESULTS: The NPWT device was re

Oral ranulas are caused by extravasation of mucus from the sublingual glands, and the preferred treatment varies. We have developed a two-incision fistula operation for their treatment, and in this clinical study we have evaluated the efficacy and safety of this approach. Twelve patients with oral ranulas confirmed by fine needle aspiration cytology were enrolled and gave their consent to be treated by our new technique. The clinical outcomes and complications were evaluated during a period that ranged from 8-24 months. Nine ranulas became smaller and gradually disappeared, and there were no c

Myoepithelioma is a rare, benign salivary neoplasm, most frequently located in the salivary gland; extrasalivary cases most commonly occur in the palate. This tumor is prone to recurrence. We present a case of recurrent myoepithelioma in the nasal cavity with a palatal fistula treated both by a palatal approach and a piriform apertural approach. The combination of these approaches widens the surgical space, allowing removal of the mass. It is important not only to excise the mass but also to allow for reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Parotid duct or gland injury can be caused by assault with a knife, bottle, electrical-saw, road traffic accident, or rarely gunshot and fractures of the facial skeleton. The injury can be in the form of laceration, ductal exposure, total cutting, or crushing of the duct. These conditions are difficult to diagnose because of complex anatomy and variable forms of the injury. A successful management of parotid duct injuries depends on early diagnosis and appropriate intervention; improper surgery may lead to complications such as sialocele or salivary fistula
