Congenital Cheek Salivary Fistula Associated with an Aberrant Parotid Duct System: Embryological Considerations and Surgical Repair.

Congenital cheek salivary fistula is a rare developmental anomaly with an abnormal connection between the parotid gland and the skin. An eight-year-old child presented with an opening on the right cheek, with intermittent saliva leakage aggravated during food intake and recurrent infections. Imaging studies had confirmed the diagnosis. Surgical excision of the fistulous tract successfully alleviated the patient's symptoms.

Drain Fluid Amylase as an Early Negative Predictor of Salivary Fistula Following Free Flap Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: Salivary fistula is a known complication following head and neck free flap reconstruction involving the aerodigestive tract. We sought to examine the association between surgical drain fluid amylase and salivary fistula formation during postoperative hospitalization. METHODS: Eighty patients who underwent head and neck reconstruction involving the aerodigestive tract at our institution between 2019 and 2023 were included. Amylase concentration (IU/L) was measured from a Jackson-Pratt drain located along the mucosal closure line on postoperative days 1-5. RESULTS: Twelve patients

Autologous Vein Graft for Reconstruction of Duct Defect Following Surgery for Parotid Duct Cyst.

Parotid cyst is an uncommon salivary gland cyst; particularly the retention cyst formed in the main duct of the parotid gland is exceedingly rare. Previously, the management of parotid duct cysts typically necessitated excision of salivary gland tissue, potentially resulting in various complications such as salivary fistula, facial nerve injury, and loss of glandular function. The authors present a novel approach utilizing autogenous vein grafts for repairing duct defects post-surgery in a patient with parotid duct cyst. The purpose of adopting this method was to preserve the function of the p

Ultrasound-guided transfacial approach in the surgical management of impacted parotid stones: Beyond sialendoscopy.

Parotid lithiasis represent a frequent cause of salivary obstruction, especially complex when it involves the proximal third of Stensen's duct or when the stones are large than 7 mm. Although sialendoscopy have optimized its management, there are cases where these techniques fail or are unavailable. The ultrasound-guided transfacial approach emerges as a minimally invasive alternative. This retrospective study conducted between February 2024 and February 2025 aims to describe the technique and outcomes of ultrasound-guided transfacial surgery in a tertiary care centre. Adults with stones ≥7 mm

Odontogenic Cutaneous Fistula-Induced Submandibular Abscess in a Dog: A Rare Presentation.

Odontogenic cutaneous fistulas (OCFs) are relatively uncommon in veterinary patients. They are typically caused by chronic periapical infections of the maxillary teeth. Mandibular OCFs that extend through the cortical bone into submandibular soft tissues are extremely rare. This report describes the case of a 14-year-old male mixed-breed dog that presented with a submandibular cutaneous lesion initially misdiagnosed as a salivary mucocele. OCFs are frequently misdiagnosed because atypical presentations may lack obvious intraoral abnormalities and mimic salivary gland disease, lymphadenopathy,

Early Predictors of Fistula Formation Following Head and Neck Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Salivary fistula formation is a common and serious complication following head and neck reconstruction. Because it can cause delayed wound healing and infection and carotid artery rupture in severe cases, hence, early detection and treatment are crucial. This study was designed to identify early predictors of postoperative fistula formation. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent head and neck reconstruction between 2015 and 2022. Body temperature, serum white blood cell (WBC) count, and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were assessed until po

Pyogenic granuloma of the hard palate leading to alveolar cleft: a case report.

This case report describes a rare occurrence of pyogenic granuloma (PG) in the hard palate deviating from its typical gingival location that led to the formation of an alveolar cleft. The aggressive growth pattern of the lesion, with atypical progression from a pedunculated nodule to an alveolar cleft, raised concern. The diagnosis was based on magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography findings, which revealed a tadpole-shaped lesion originating from the midline hard palate. The differential diagnosis included a minor salivary gland tumor. Surgical excision was performed under general
