Effectiveness of the Fibrinogen-Thrombin-Impregnated Collagen Patch in the Prevention of Postoperative Complications after Parotidectomy: A Single-Blinded, Randomized Controlled Study.

We investigated whether a fibrinogen-thrombin collagen sponge patch reduces postoperative complications of parotid gland surgery. This single-blinded, randomized controlled study included 165 patients who underwent parotid surgery for benign tumors (2018-2019) at a tertiary center. Primary outcomes were postoperative drain amount, days until drain removal, and discharge. Patients were scheduled for follow-up at 1 and 4 weeks, and 3 months after surgery. Complications including surgical site infection, pain, seroma, sialocele, salivary fistula, facial nerve palsy, Frey's syndrome with subjectiv

Parotid fistula and/or salivary collection: an underrecognized and underreported preventable complication following surgery for oral cancer.

BACKGROUND: Parotid fistula after surgery for oral cancer is a less commonly recognized and less reported complication. In this study, we aimed to report its incidence and identify factors predisposing patients to it and the management of the patients in our cohort. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of treatment-naive patients with oral cancer who underwent surgery from January 2019 to December 2020 in a single unit of our institute. Patients who were operated for recurrence and second primary were excluded. RESULTS: A total of 434 patients were included in the study. Most were men (n

A Rare Neck Pathology in Children; Congenital Sıalocutanous Fistule: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: In this article, we aimed to present a congenital sialocutaneous fistula originating from the parotid gland in a 4-year-old child with MR findings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with a small hole in the inferior right half of the neck and a sticky fluid coming out of this area. Neck ultrasonography (US) and contrast neck Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were performed on the patient. In the US, a millimeter linear, vaguely hypoechoic appearance was observed in the subcutaneous tissue at this level on the neck. In contrast-

Extracapsular dissection by the sternocleidomastoid muscle-parotid space approach reduces the risks of postparotidectomy sialocele and salivary fistula.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative sialoceles and fistulas are frequent surgical complications of parotid tumor resection. Extracapsular dissection by the sternocleidomastoid muscle-parotid space approach (ECD-SMPSA) is a minimally invasive technique. To our knowledge, the characteristics of sialoceles and fistulas secondary to ECD-SMPSA have not been reported. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 52 patients who underwent ECD-SMPSA without sialocele/fistula prevention measures. Postoperative sialoceles and fistulas were evaluated during 2 months of follow-up. RESULTS: Among the 52 patients, only

[Complications in the surgery of the parotid salivary glands. Causes, mechanisms of development, methods of prevention].

Operations for neoplasms of the parotid salivary gland require from the surgeon a deep knowledge of the anatomical and topographic features of this area and technical skill, which puts it in a number of «jewelry» operations that require patience and concentration. The review is devoted to the topic of specific postoperative complications after parotidectomy or subtotal resection of the gland. These include relapses of tumors, paralysis or paresis of facial muscles, Frey syndrome, salivary fistulas or sialocele, violation of skin sensitivity, soft tissue deformity. The review presents the frequ

Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Submandibular Gland With Cutaneous Fistula: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of salivary glands, also referred to as epidermoid carcinoma, is a very rare neoplastic tumor. It occurs as metastasis of a cutaneous or mucosal squamous carcinoma of the head and neck or as a primary SCC. In the latter case, the most known risk factor is previous irradiation to the gland. Common clinical symptoms are represented by cervical swelling and hyposialia. The treatment is essentially surgical, most often supplemented by a radical neck dissection and postoperative radiation therapy. A 75-year-old male patient with a history of chronic smoking was consult

Iodoform Gauze Packing is an Alternative Therapy for Postoperative Parotid Fistula.

Surgery-related salivary fistula is the result of intraoperative or postoperative parotid gland damage and extravasation of fluid secreted by acinar into the interstitial space. Most are treated conservatively. Local injection of botulinum toxin is an effective method, but it is relatively expensive and not available in some hospitals. In clinical practice, the authors observed that packing iodoform gauze from the fistula toward the parotid gland can quickly stop postoperative salivary fistula in several patients. This method is simple and easy to implement, and the effect is quick. The disapp

Comparison of two transcutaneous approaches for the removal of impacted parotid stones.

The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the indications and treatment outcomes of two transcutaneous approaches for the removal of impacted parotid stones. Sixty-eight consecutive patients with impacted parotid stones underwent endoscopy-assisted lithotomy via a direct mini-incision or a peri-auricular flap. Clinical safety and outcomes were evaluated. Complete stone extraction was achieved in all patients. In the mini-incision group (52 patients), the stones were in the middle third of the main duct in 31 patients, at the hilum in 16, and in the intraglandular duct in five. In the

Partial Superficial Parotidectomy Versus Extracapsular Anatomical Dissection for the Treatment of Benign Parotid Tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Superficial benign parotid tumors are a common neoplasm of the salivary glands. Different surgical procedures have been applied for partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) and extracapsular dissection (ECD), which are the two predominant surgical techniques. Our study aimed to evaluate PSP versus ECD for benign parotid tumors, in relation to post-operative complications and recurrence rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 266 patients who underwent parotidectomies of benign superficial parotid tumors were evaluated retrospectively. The first group (PSP group) was composed of 143 patients

Parotid Fistulas after Reconstructive Surgery for the Face and Neck Burn Contracture.

A parotid fistula is a rare symptom, caused by abnormal canal between the skin and the salivary duct or gland, leading to salivary discharge from skin. A 53-year-old man suffered a severe facial, neck, and precordial flame burn, which was treated by multiple debridement and split-thickness-skin-grafts. After the release of cervical scar contracture with a distant flap, saliva discharge from small fistula became evident, following him coming to the authors' hospital for treatment of the scar contracture of the face and neck. The apertures of the fistula were located 2 cm cephalad. Computed tomo

Management of a salivary fistula following removal of mandibular distractors in a neonate.

There are multiple management options for treatment of iatrogenic salivary fistulas including reduced oral intake, pressure dressings, total parotidectomy, tympanic neurectomy, surgical repair, radiation therapy, and pharmacotherapy. However, the optimal management of salivary fistulas is unclear due to uncertain efficacy and adverse outcomes. We present a case of a neonate that developed a submandibular fistula following removal of mandibular distractors and was ultimately successfully managed using intralesional botulinum toxin injection. The purpose of this communication is to summarize the

Watching Food Videos Leads to Postparotidectomy Salivary Fistula.

Salivary fistula is a common postparotidectomy complication, and eating sour or spicy food ranks among the leading causes. Here we report a rare postparotidectomy salivary fistula case, a 31-year-old female patient who affirmed that she did not eat any irritating foods but admitted that she had been watching food videos for up to 4 hours every day since she left hospital. This case offers a cautionary tale about postparotidectomy precautions.

Suppurative minor salivary gland sialolithiasis.

Sialolithiasis is a common nonneoplastic disease of the major salivary glands that often affects the submandibular glands. Minor salivary gland involvement by sialolithiasis is uncommon, with only 273 cases reported. A long clinical history, acute symptoms, and mucopurulent discharge are unusual features of these cases. Herein, we report the case of a 63-year-old woman who complained of symptomatic nodular swelling of the buccal mucosa associated with purulent discharge for several days. The clinical history lasted 15 years, with episodes of asymptomatic non-suppurative swelling in the same ar

Combination stem cell therapy using dental pulp stem cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells for critical hindlimb ischemia.

Robot-mediated therapies enhance the recovery of post-stroke patients with motor deficits. Repetitive and repeatable exercises are essential for rehabilitation following brain damage or other disorders that impact the central nervous system, as plasticity permits to reorganize its neural structure, fostering motor relearning. Despite the fact that so many studies claim the validity of robot-mediated therapy in post-stroke patient rehabilitation, it is still difficult to assess to what extent its adoption improves the efficacy of traditional therapy in daily life, and also because most of the s

Validation of the AOAC method for analyzing fatty acids in meat by-products for the Korean Food Composition Database.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine and metabolic disorder affecting women of childbearing age. Infertility caused by ovulatory disorders and low follicle quality is an urgent problem. Abnormal fatty acid oxidation (FAO) contributes critically to the etiology and progression in PCOS. However, the potential mechanism by which FAO affects follicular development in PCOS patients is unclear. Here, we demonstrate that increased expression of tripartite motif-containing protein 21 (TRIM21) (an E3 ubiquitin ligase) in the prenatal anti-Müllerian hormone PCOS mouse model leads to
