A meta-analysis of the pros and cons of partial superficial parotidectomy versus superficial parotidectomy for the treatment of benign parotid neoplasms.

OBJECTIVES: Salivary gland tumors are predominantly benign and frequently localized in the parotid gland (P). The treatment consists primarily of surgical removal; however, the appropriate extent remains a subject of debate. In suitable tumors, superficial parotidectomy (SP) may be substituted for less invasive partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) (I C). This systematic review analyzed the available literature, comparing PSP and SP with regards to several postoperative outcome parameters (O). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Established medical databanks were screened for articles evaluating outcome

2-Octyl cyanoacrylate to prevent salivary fistula formation following oral cavity microvascular reconstruction: A prospective trial.

BACKGROUND: Salivary fistulas remain a significant problem in patients undergoing major head and neck reconstructive surgery. Surgical sealants have become increasingly used in cutaneous and non-cutaneous wound closure, providing a barrier to fluids/gases and promoting healing. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a common surgical sealant, 2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate (2-OCA, Dermabond®), in the prevention of salivary fistulas following free flap reconstruction of the oral cavity. METHODS: In this non-randomized, single arm prospective trial, patients undergoing free flap reco

[Planning and design of European prospective randomized trial on the value of drain in parotidectomy].

INTRODUCTION: There are no valid clinical studies on the value of wound drains in parotid surgery. The aim of the current trial is to analyze the influence of the closed wound drain (redon) on the incidence of postoperative complications such as bleeding, wound healing problems, infection, as well as salivary cyst and fistula after superficial or partial parotidectomy. METHODS: A European-wide multicenter prospective randomized study was planned. The study protocol was prepared by the leading study center (ENT University Hospital Cologne) in cooperation with the ENT University Hospitals Jena

Drain fluid amylase as a predictor of postoperative salivary fistula in cases with benign parotid tumours.

BACKGROUND: Late diagnosis of a salivary fistula increases the risk of wound infection and scarring. The purpose of the present study was to identify a quantitative predictor of postoperative salivary fistula for cases treated with surgery. METHODS: Demographic, intraoperative and postoperative parameters for 57 cases that received surgery for benign parotid tumours were recorded from June 2017 to June 2018, of which 18 cases developed salivary fistulas. These data were analysed using univariate and binary logistic regression analyses as well as receiver operating curve analysis. RESULTS: Dr

Novel use of the transparotid approach to the mandible for benign pathology.

Access to the mandibular ramus can be difficult. There are a number of described methods for accessing the mandibular ramus and condyle, including a transoral or transcutaneous approach. Access via a transoral approach prevents surgical scars but can result in an excessive amount of bone removal from the anterior mandibular ramus. The transparotid approach has been described and commonly used for the management of mandibular trauma. It allows for direct access to the mandibular ramus and condyle with a number of possible complications, including salivary fistula formation, sialocele and facial

Type a botulinum toxin in the management of spontaneous salivary otorrhea: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous salivary otorrhea is a rare presentation only previously documented twice in literature where parotid salivary secretions are found in the external auditory canal. Conventional treatment of spontaneous parotid salivary fistulas includes surgical management with interposed grafts, fistula tract ablation, and possible superficial parotidectomy. Associated risks include facial nerve injury, Frey syndrome and facial scarring. Here we report the first case of spontaneous salivary otorrhea conservatively managed with a type A botulinum toxin (BTA) injection. CASE PRESENTATIO

Early management of parotid gland injury with oral nortriptyline and closed drain.

Parotid gland plays the most critical role in saliva secretion in the oral cavity. Parotid gland injuries due to facial trauma can cause various complications such as formation of a fistula or sialocele. Thus, such saliva-related complications can interfere with wound healing and increase the risk of infection. Several previous studies have discussed the treatment of fistula or sialocele. Nonetheless, prevention of such complications is of utmost importance. We present a case of parotid gland injury due to trauma to the cheeks that was surgically treated, with early postoperative management in

Positive Effects of Local Botulinum Toxin Injection and Colchicine for Complicated Chronic Recurrent Parotitis: A Case Report.

Chronic recurrent parotitis (CRP) is a rare affliction of unknown cause characterized by recurrent episodes of unilateral or bilateral nonobstructive and nonsuppurative inflammation of the parotid glands. Management of CRP is not standardized, and attempts at treatment often fail. We report a case of a 29-year-old female patient with CRP for 13 years, with recurrent acute episodes, complicated with a collection and cutaneous fistula, refractory to repeated courses of corticosteroids and antibiotics. Injections of botulinum toxin in the parotid gland and maintenance treatment with oral colchici

Reconstruction of parotid duct defect with autologous vein graft and vascular coupler after buccal mucosa cancer resection.

The distal end of parotid duct is often inevitably resected en-block with the buccal mucosa cancer to obtain safety margin and prevent local recurrence. Ligation of duct frequently causes complications like cheek swelling, fistula and gland function loss. The authors describe a novel procedure of combined use of autologous vein graft and vascular coupler to reconstruct the parotid duct defect for buccal mucosa cancer patients who undergo radical neck dissection and free-flap reconstruction, no lumen-stent or cannula is needed. Case examples are shown to illustrate the operative details and dif

Surgical Management of Parotid Duct Injury Using a Feeding Tube.

The parotid duct (Stenson's duct) can be damaged during traumatic injuries and surgical interventions. Early diagnosis and treatment of a duct injury is of great importance because complications such as sialocele and salivary gland fistula may develop if the duct is not surgically repaired. We think that the feeding tube is an ideal material in the parotid duct repair because of its technical characteristics, availability, and low cost. In this article, we described the use of a feeding tube for the treatment of a parotid duct rupture in a facial stab wound laceration, as it is a low-cost and

[Plunging ranula presenting as a giant retroauricular mass: A case report].

Plunging ranula is rare and manifests as the submandibular or submental cystic mass, without intra-oral abnormality. It usually causes misdiagnosis and malpractice. This article reported a case of plunging ranula that appeared as a massive mass located behind the left ear. A 6-year-old child presented with recurrent left retroauricular swelling over six months without obvious inducement. The mass showed repeatedly swelling and persistent skin ulcers. Physical examinations described a fluctuant, nontender mass behind the left ear whose size was about 5 cm×5 cm×3 cm. The skin upon the surface of
