Extended High Frequency Audiometry for Revealing Sudden Sensory Neural Hearing Loss in Acute Tinnitus Patients.

Introduction  Phase 3 trials have shown comparable efficacy of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and vitamin K antagonists in patients with acute venous thromboembolism (VTE), with less major bleeding events in patients randomized to DOAC treatment. With DOACs being increasingly used in clinical practice, evaluation of the DOACs in daily practice-based conditions is needed to confirm their safety and effectiveness. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of apixaban in VTE patients in daily practice. Methods  In this retrospective cohort study, consecutive patients d

Sialo-cutaneous fistula with ectopic submandibular gland sialolith, revealing a hidden ipsilateral enlarged and elongated styloid process: a consideration based on CT findings.

Sialolithiasis is a common salivary pathology, and an uncommon complication of sialadenitis and sialolithiasis is the formation of fistulous tracts to other compartments. Submandibular gland sialo-oral fistulae are not particularly remarkable, given the location of the gland and Wharton's duct, but submandibular sialolith-associated fistulae to other cervico-facial compartments (transcervical sialo-cutaneous and sialo-pharyngeal fistulae) are much less common. We report herein an unusual case of a 49-year-old obese man with sialo-cutaneous fistula containing a large, ectopic sialolith in subcu

Orocutaneous fistulas of odontogenic origin presenting as a recurrent pyogenic granuloma.

Orocutaneous fistulas, or cutaneous sinuses of odontogenic origin, are uncommon but often misdiagnosed as skin lesions unrelated to dental origin by physicians. Accurate diagnosis and use of correct investigative modalities are important because orocutaneous fistulas are easily confused for skin or bone tumors, osteomyelitis, infected cysts, salivary gland fistulas, and other pathologies. The aim of this study is to present our experience with a patient with orocutaneous fistulas of odontogenic origin presenting as recurrent pyogenic granuloma of the cheek, and to discuss their successful trea

A Functional Approach to Posttraumatic Salivary Fistula Treatment: The Use of Botulinum Toxin.

This manuscript highlights key aspects regarding the practical use of botulinum toxin for the conservative nonsurgical treatment of a rarely encountered, but significant posttraumatic complication-the parotid salivary fistula. It adds information to the scarce existing literature on the subject. The authors outline the main differences between postoperative and trauma-related parotid injury regarding salivary fistula treatment. A total of 6 patients with trauma-related salivary fistulas have been treated by Abobotulinum toxin A injections over the course of 5 years. The technique is detailed,

Extracapsular dissection versus partial superficial parotidectomy for the treatment of benign parotid tumours.

The purpose of this study was to compare the complications of patients treated for a benign parotid tumour (BPT) by extracapsular dissection (ECD) vs. partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP). A comprehensive literature investigation was conducted by searching electronic databases. A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies were performed to assess ECD and PSP for the treatment of BPTs with fixed-effects models. The outcomes analysed were transient or permanent facial nerve injury, Frey syndrome, recurrence rate, infection, and salivary fistula/sialocele. A total of 1641 patie

Use of Parotid Gland Fascia in the Prevention of Frey Syndrome After Parotidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Superficial parotidectomy is standard surgical procedure for parotid gland tumor, and Frey syndrome and depressed deformity of the region are often seen as complications. In this study, we performed prevention of Frey syndrome by covering the residual parotid gland defect with the parotid gland fascia flap. METHOD: The subjects were 5 patients with parotid gland tumor. Tumor was localized in the inferior and superior poles of the parotid gland in 3 and 2 patients, respectively, and it was confirmed on preoperative diagnostic imaging that the tumor and parotid gland fascia were not

Buccal Myomucosal Flap Reconstruction After Resection of Palatal Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma.

Salivary gland tumors are rare, constituting approximately 0.5% of pediatric malignancies, yet account for over 50% of malignant salivary gland neoplasms, of which a majority are mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs). We present a case of MEC involving the palatal minor salivary gland of an adolescent patient successfully reconstructed using buccal myomucosal flap. The subject presented as a 17-year-old male with a painless left hard palatal mass found to have imaging suspicious for minor salivary gland tumor and punch biopsy consistent with a low-grade MEC. The subject underwent wide local excisio

Ectopic salivary gland fistula in the sternoclavicular joint region.

Although rare, ectopic salivary gland fistula should be considered in the differential diagnosis when treating a fistulous lesion on the neck because its natural history and the level of difficulty of surgery are different from those of the branchial fistula.

Tuberculous parotitis: A series of eight cases and review of literature.

Although tuberculosis is a common health problem in developing countries such as India, tuberculous parotitis (tubercular involvement of parotid gland) is rarely encountered. Because of very low incidence and nonspecific symptoms, it is often misdiagnosed as parotid neoplasm. Ultrasonographic and computed tomographic findings are also noncontributory for this entity. Hence, to increase awareness about this rare entity, here, we report a series of eight cases of tuberculous parotitis which were diagnosed on fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and successfully treated with antitubercular drug

Botulinum Toxin for Side-Effect Management and Prevention of Surgical Complications in Patients Treated for Head and Neck Cancers and Esophageal Cancer.

The management of head and neck cancers (HNC) and esophageal cancer (EC) is complex and often involves multiple modalities of treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. The side effects associated with these therapies and disease processes are extensive. A literature review was performed to evaluate the use of botulinum toxin as an intervention for side-effect management in patients with HNC and EC. Specific adverse events reviewed included salivary function (hypersalivation, fistula, hyposalivation) and gastrointestinal motility (esophageal stricture, delayed gastric e

Chinese expert group consensus on diagnosis and clinical management of osteoradionecrosis of the mandible.

Osteoradionecrosis of the mandible (MORN) is one of the most devastating complications caused by radiation therapy in the head and neck region. It is characterized by infection and chronic necrosis of the mandible as the main manifestation. Clinically, MORN-related symptoms include swelling, pain, dysphagia, trismus, masticatory or speech disorders, refractory orocutaneous fistula, bone exposure, and even pathological fracture. MORN has become a challenging clinical problem for oral and maxillofacial surgeons to deal with, but thus far, this problem has not been solved due to the lack of widel
