A 59-year-old woman presented to an otolaryngology clinic with an 8-week history of a painless lump over her left parotid gland. Her medical history included an invasive ductal carcinoma (33 mm) and a ductal carcinoma in situ (70 mm) of the right breast, for which she had a mastectomy and various adjuvant therapies. The primary tumour presented 8 years prior to the metachronous metastasis. This patient was a non-smoker and had no significant family history. Post-superficial parotidectomy pathology revealed the parotid gland tumour to be oestrogen receptor-positive and HER2 receptor-positive, t

BACKGROUND: Administration of botulinum toxin through intraductal salivary infusion may decrease the risks of percutaneous needle injection and improve delivery to permeate the entire gland parenchyma.
METHODS: The safety of intraductal salivary gland infusion was tested with prospective evaluation of two patients using interviews, clinical examination, and pressure measurement during infusion. Retrospective chart review of two subsequently treated patients assessed treatment of a parotid-cutaneous fistula and sialorrhea.
RESULTS: No complications were identified in the safety study. Pressur

An ectopic accessory parotid gland with a congenital cheek fistula is a rare congenital condition that belongs to the oculoauriculovertebral spectrum. The clinical symptom is generally a cheek fistula. Surgical treatment can include either the removal of the ectopic gland or a duct transposition. We describe a sialendoscopy-assisted duct transposition and its associated surgical management. Sialendoscopy helped identify the fistula tract through the mucosa. Sialendoscopy-assisted duct transposition in treating an ectopic accessory parotid gland proved to be a safe and minimally invasive proced

INTRODUCTION: Involvement of the salivary glands in tuberculosis is rare, even in countries where tuberculosis is endemic. It can occur by systemic dissemination from a distant focus or, less commonly, as primary involvement. This article focuses on its myriad clinical presentations that pose a diagnostic challenge to the clinician. We discuss the schema of investigations required to confirm the diagnosis and the limitations faced in the low-cost setting of a developing country.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records, including history, physical examination and imaging findings, and the resul

A 6-year-old male was seen for evaluation of middle ear polyp with associated hearing loss and otorrhea. CT scan revealed canal polyp with a stalk extending to the middle ear with malformation of the malleus and incus. The patient underwent exploratory tympanotomy which revealed a fistula from the bony-cartilaginous junction connecting to a middle ear mass which had eroded the incus. Intraoperative pathology suggested columnar epithelium without cholesteatoma or muscle. Final pathologic diagnosis reported dense fibrous tissue as well as ectopic salivary gland tissue, consistent with salivary g

Our aim was to investigate whether perioperative transdermal application of scopolamine could help to prevent fistulas after parotidectomy, and to this end we retrospectively studied the records of all patients (n=645) who had benign parotid tumours treated by partial parotidectomy between 2011 and 2016. We found that scopolamine led to a significant decrease in the incidence of salivary fistulas from 54/371(15%) in the group not given it to 10/274 (4%) in the group given it (p<0.0001). The "number needed to treat" was 9.17. There was a relatively low incidence of all adverse effects after sco

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to evaluate the rates of complications, morbidity, and safety with the transparotid approach.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted and consisted of 53 surgically treated patients in the past five years for low condylar neck and subcondylar fractures. Only patients with malocclusion and who underwent open reduction with internal fixation with the retromandibular transparotid approach were included. The examined parameters were postoperative suboptimal occlusion, deflection, saliva fistula, and facial nerve weakness.
RESULTS: Fifty-t

PURPOSE: Parotidectomy may be burdened by numerous complications that may worsen subjects' quality of life (QoL). These include paresis or paralysis of the facial nerve, face profile asymmetry, keloids, salivary fistula, Frey Syndrome (FS), First Bite Syndrome (FBS), and hypo-anaesthesia of the skin. This study is an effort to assess the incidence of complications following parotidectomy and their impact on subjects' QoL.
METHODS: Subjects undergoing parotidectomy for benign neoplasms from 2012 to 2015 were selected and invited to attend our outpatient clinic. After a brief anamnesis, the med

Foramen tympanicum (FT), or foramen of Huschke, describes an uncommon anatomicvariant of a persistent bony defect connecting the external acoustic meatus to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Although rare, it can be associated with significant complications, such as TMJ herniation, salivary gland fistula, infectious or tumoral spread between the external acoustic meatus and the TMJ, or result in inadvertent ear injury during TMJ arthroscopy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of a symptomatic FT with a full description of computed tomography and magnetic resonance ima

The study aimed to retrospectively evaluate surgical treatment outcomes after delayed parotid gland and duct injuries. Nine patients subjected to parotid gland and duct injuries with 1- to 3-month treatment delay were retrospectively evaluated with special reference of etiology, past medical history, and injury location. Conservative treatment, microsurgical anastomosis, and diversion of salivary flow or ligation were chosen for delayed parotid gland and duct injuries concerning to their site of injury, time of repair and procedures. Assistant treatment as pressure dressing was adopted thereaf

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Salivary fistulas are a common minor complication of parotid surgery. botulinum toxin has repeatedly been reported to be an adequate treatment of this entity. To date, there is little scientific evidence for clinical decision making after appearance of a salivary fistula.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart analysis of 16 patients who had been treated with botulinum toxin for salivary fistula.
METHODS: All patients who had been treated for salivary fistula at a tertiary referral hospital from 2010 to 2016 were included. Patient files were used to obtain characteristics o

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this meta-analysis was to test the null hypothesis of no difference in facial nerve dysfunction in studies that compared classical antegrade facial nerve dissection (AFND) versus retrograde facial nerve dissection (RFND) during benign parotid surgery.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct and relevant journals was undertaken up to June 27, 2018. Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials (CCTs), and retrospective studies aimed at comparing

Objective: To evaluate the effect of the application of functional parotid surgery for removal of benign parotid tumors and the prevention of Frey syndrome. Method: One hundred and fifty-six cases with benign tumor were underwent functional regional parotidectomy. All tumors were smaller than 4 cm in diameter. The safe surgical margin was 5 mm when the tumors were less than 2 cm in diameter, while the safety margin was 1 cm for the tumors diameter between 2-4 cm. 156 cases were assigned to two groups(A and B). The absorbable hemostatic sponge was placed between the surface of parotid gland and

RATIONALE: Foreign bodies are rarely found in the submandibular gland and the Wharton duct, due to their physiological and anatomical features.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 23-year-old man was referred to Foshan Stomatology Hospital in July 2016, with pain and intermittent swelling in the right submandibular area.
DIAGNOSES: Physical examination revealed enlarged, indurated, and painful swelling in the right submandibular area, with a normal oral cavity. No abscess or fistula was detected. Radiography and computed tomography (CT) indicated a 1.7 cm radiopaque mass in the Wharton duct, close to the su

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive techniques (MIT), including sialendoscopy, extracorporeal lithotripsy and intraoral approach, have to be preferred in parotid stones removal. In case of MIT failure, a combined intra- and extra-oral approach can be achieved. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and the complications of these combined approaches.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study has been conducted on patients treated between 2006 and 2015. All adult patients presenting with one or more parotid stones and in whom TMI failed have been included. Age and sex of the patients

The parotid duct can be damaged in traumatic injuries and surgical interventions. Early diagnosis and treatment of a duct injury is of great importance because complications such as sialocele and salivary gland fistula may develop if the duct is not surgically repaired. We think the cuff of an intubation tube is an ideal material in parotid duct repair, because of its technical characteristics, easiness of availability, and low-cost. In this paper, we described the use of the cuff cannula of an intubation tube for the diagnosis and treatment of parotid duct laceration, as a low-cost and easy t

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland surgery (PGS) has to manage the balancing act between sufficient radicality and preservation of functional structures. While many studies evaluate post-therapeutic complication due to different extent of surgery, the current study introduces bipolar dissection (BP) being a fast and safe preparation technique.
METHODS: Analysis of clinical parameters (age, sex, tumour entity, treatment modalities, facial nerve palsy, bleeding, saliva fistula and Frey's syndrome) of 319 consecutively included patients who underwent extracapsular dissection and superficial/total/radical
