Congenital Salivary Fistula From Parotid Main Gland.

Congenital parotid fistulas are extremely rare diseases. Herein, the authors report a patient with congenital salivary fistula from parotid main gland in a 15-year-old boy. Therefore, clinicians should consider the possibility of congenital parotid fistula form parotid main gland. Surgical excision of the fistula and parotid gland can be effective treatment option of congenital parotid fistula.

Pharyngocutaneous Fistula as a Rare Late Postoperative Complication Following Submandibulectomy: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Submandibular gland excision is the gold standard treatment for submandibular gland disease. Although submandibulectomy is a relatively standardized surgical procedure, complications are frequently reported. These complications include nerve paralysis or paresis, aesthetic sequelae, hematoma, salivary fistulas or sialoceles, wound infections, hypertrophic scars and inflammations caused by residual lithiasis in the salivary duct. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a rare complication of submandibular gland excision, pharyngocutaneous fistula, which appeared 6 years after previous s

The ectopic accessory parotid system: A new patient, studied through magnetic resonance imaging.

The ectopic accessory parotid system (EAPS) connotes an extra parotid tissue with its ductal outlet that is morphologically distinct from the main parotid gland and its drainage system. Clinically presenting as a saliva-draining cheek fistula near the oral commissure, this rare congenital anomaly is almost always associated with ipsilateral preauricular appendages and occasional mandibular hypoplasia, and is considered a variant of the oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum. This report discusses the embryology, clinical details, and management aspects in a new patient, highlighting the role of mag

Sialocutaneous fistula to the external auditory canal repaired with superficial parotidectomy and temporoparietal flap: A case report.

RATIONALE: Gustatory otorrhea can lead to cutaneous changes, recurrent infection, and social disruption. We present a case of a late, evolving sialocutaneous fistula to the external auditory canal, managed surgically after failing conservative therapies. This case is unique by late evolution, whereby the symptoms presented with significance 27 years after her operation and 19 years after mild symptoms initially arose. PATIENT CONCERNS: Gustatory, left-sided clear otorrhea with acutely increased volume over 8 months causing social disruption. DIAGNOSES: Sialocutaneous fistula to the external

Complications after parotid gland surgery Our experience.

AIM: Complications after parotid surgery include deficit of the facial nerve, wound complications, as sialocele and salivary fistula, and Frey syndrome; the goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the type of parotid surgery performed and the incidence of each of these complications. MATERIAL OF STUDY: A total of 184 patients were evaluated and 158 were included in the study. Four different kinds of intervention were made: extracapsular dissection, partial superficial parotidectomy; superficial parotidectomy and total parotidectomy. The incidence of each complication was s

The extent of surgery for benign parotid pathology and its influence on complications: A prospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of benign parotid tumors is aimed at complete extirpation of the mass with preservation of facial nerve function. There is a relative paucity of literature pertaining to complications after benign parotid surgery and related risk factors. We aim to critically review the outcomes following treatment of benign parotid pathology when surgery entailed either complete superficial parotidectomy (CSP), partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) or extracapsular dissection (ECD). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a review of prospectively collected data of all parotidecto

Primary treatment of early fistula of parotid duct with botulinum toxin type A injection.

Salivary duct injury can be idiopathic, iatrogenic, or post-trauma and may result in sialocele or fistula. Most injuries regress spontaneously and botulinum toxin A is one of several therapeutic possibilities. We report a case of iatrogenic injury to the parotid duct after Mohs' micographic surgery for a squamous cell carcinoma excision in the left jaw region, treated by injection of botulinum toxin type A. Although the fistula by duct injury can be self-limiting, botulinum toxin injection by promoting the inactivity of the salivary gland allows rapid healing of the fistula.

Does Nissen fundoplication improve deglutition in children?

OBJECTIVES: Anecdotal reports have suggested that silent corticotroph tumours behave in an aggressive fashion; however, clear comparative data with other non-functioning adenomas (NFAs) are lacking. The aims of the study were, first, to review the natural history of those non-functioning pituitary adenomas with positive immunoreactivity for ACTH and secondly, to determine whether this subgroup behave more aggressively than ACTH immunonegative NFAs by means of comparison with existing departmental data. METHODS AND PATIENTS: Twenty-eight patients (16 men, mean age 51.3 years) who underwent tra

Chronic sialadenitis with sialolithiasis associated with parapharyngeal fistula and tonsillolith.

Sialolithiasis is a common salivary pathology, suggested to affect over 1% of the population by postmortem studies. An uncommon complication of sialadenitis and sialolithiasis is the formation of fistulous tracts to other cervicofacial compartments. Submandibular gland sialocutaneous and sialo-oral fistulae have been sparsely described, but a sialo-pharyngeal fistula manifesting as a tonsillolith has yet to be described. We present an unusual case of a 35-year-old male presenting with recalcitrant neck pain and a presumed tonsillolith in the background of chronic submandibular sialadenitis, su

Clinical study of extrapulmonary head and neck tuberculosis in an urban setting.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a common inflammatory disorder that strongly impacts patients' quality of life. CRSwNP is still a challenge for ENT specialists due to its unknown pathogenesis, difficult control and frequent relapse. We tested the hypothesis that a new standardised therapeutic approach based on individual clinical-cytological grading (CCG), may improve control of the disease and prevent the needing for surgery. We analysed 204 patients suffering from bilateral CRSwNP, 145 patients of whom regularly assumed therapy, respecting the planned check-up, and were

Uncommon situation and presentation of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis.

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis of the parotid gland is a very uncommon chronic inflammatory salivary gland disease. Clinically, it presents as a slow-growing painful. Histologically, it showed a chronic inflammation and fibrosis. This case report highlights the clinical, radiological and histological aspects of this disease. We report unusual case of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis of the parotid in a 12-year-old man. CT detected a mass of tissue density in the right parotid. The evolution was marked by spontaneous fistula allowing a surgical biopsy. The mass regressed after corticosteroids.

Treatment of Parotid Sialocele after Sustaining a Facial Injury. Case Report and Literature Review.

We are presenting the case of a patient who developed a parotid sialocele after sustaining a facial injury. The patient was treated by creating a controlled intraoral fistula that drained saliva into the oral cavity and led to resolution of the sialocele. Articles were reviewed for discussion of current treatment methods in managing parotid sialocele and fistula. The articles reported successful management of parotid sialocele and fistula using both nonsurgical and surgical methods. Treatment depends upon the location of the injury (ductal injury vs. parenchymal injury) and the time of treatme

Factors influencing sialocele or salivary fistula formation postparotidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Does the extent of parotidectomy or other patient or tumor characteristics influence the rate of sialocele/salivary fistula formation? METHODS: All patients who underwent parotidectomy at the University of Wisconsin from 1994 to 2013 were considered. Patients who developed a sialocele/salivary fistula were identified. Extent of dissection, age, sex, body mass index (BMI), volume of specimen, and rate of malignancy were examined. RESULTS: Seventy of 771 patients (9.1%) developed a sialocele/salivary fistula. Sixty-seven fistulae (96%) developed within 1 month and all resolved by 6

Use of a modified high submandibular approach to treat condylar base fractures: Experience with 44 consecutive cases treated in a single institution.

PURPOSE: The aim of this article is to present our experience treating fractures of the condylar base with a modification of the high submandibular approach (HSA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 2012 and April 2015, 44 fractures of the condylar base were treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Medical Hospital of Graz using the modified HSA. RESULTS: We did not observe any damage (even transient) to the facial nerve or any complication related to violation of the parotid capsule (such as a salivary fistula, Frey syndrome, or a sialocele). CONCLUSIONS: This ap

Role of fine-needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of major salivary gland tumors: A study with histological and clinical correlation.

INTRODUCTION: Neoplastic lesions of salivary glands present an interesting subject because of their histologic diversification. Complex features exhibited by them have aroused considerable speculations concerning their histogenesis and continues to hold the interest of clinicians and pathologists. Major salivary glands are superficial and have easy accessibility for fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). These glands are generally not subjected to incisional or core needle biopsy, because of the possible risks of fistula formation and tumor seedling. FNAC diagnosis of major salivary gland neo

Surgical management of parotid salivary duct rupture secondary to non-iatrogenic trauma in a dog.

A 3-year-old French bulldog presented for evaluation of recurrent swelling and a fistula on the right cheek after a dog fight. A large volume of serous fluids was identified on the wound immediately after atropine drops. A diagnosis of parotid salivary duct rupture secondary to trauma was made. On surgical exploration, the thickened proximal segment of the severed duct was identified and circumferentially double ligated with 3-0 silk. No evidence of swelling and normal appearance of the parotid salivary gland were identified 4 months postoperative recheck. No further problems were noted 10 mon

Sialocele: A rare sequlae of transparotid approach in subcondylar fracture management.

Iatrogenic injury and/or damage to the parotid salivary gland during transparotid approach for open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular condyle fracture is a rare event. Accumulation of saliva in the gland leads to formation of a sialocele. Huge sialocele often seeks drain through the most dependent area through an extraoral wound, whereas in the absence of extraoral fistula, saliva can be redirected intraorally using a stent. A case of mangement of sialocele caused by damage to glandular elements during a transparotid approach for a subcondylar fracture reduction is reported. The va
