BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Submandibular sialolithiasis is the most frequent cause of salivary gland obstruction. Although gland-preserving procedures are increasingly used, submandibulectomy remains indicated in advanced, intra-glandular, recurrent, or complicated lithiasic sialadenitis. It is a safe, effective, and definitive therapeutic option in patients with advanced lithiasic submandibular sialadenitis. In resource-limited, geographically remote settings such as the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southeastern Morocco, patients often present at an advanced stage due to limited access to speciali

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Calcinosis is a connective tissue disorder characterized by ectopic calcification in soft tissues. It is subdivided into: dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic and iatrogenic calcification. The formation of mineralized material in the salivary glands is a common finding in the daily practice of dentists and other specialists. In most cases, this calcification is a sialolith. However, a type of ectopic calcification termed dystrophic calcification is characterized by inappropriate biomineralization in soft tissues and may be associated with trauma, chronic and localized infection or inflammatory d

Dual-energy CT (DECT), also known as spectral CT, has advanced diagnostic capabilities in head and neck pathologies beyond those of conventional single-energy CT (SECT). By having images at two distinct energy levels, DECT generates virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs), iodine maps, and quantitative features such as iodine concentration (IC) and spectral Hounsfield unit attenuation curves (SHUAC), which leads to enhancing tissue characterization, reducing artifacts, and differentiating head and neck pathologies. This review highlights DECT's applications in evaluating head and neck squamous cel

Sialolithiasis is a common cause of salivary gland obstruction, leading to symptoms such as pain and swelling. In cases of intraparenchymal submandibular stones and proximal ductal stones larger than 7 mm, interventional sialendoscopy may fail, necessitating sialoadenectomy. As an alternative, intraoral stone extraction can be performed with CT-guided navigation. This case report describes a 52-year-old male with previous sialadenitis complaints. Imaging confirmed a fixed intraparenchymal stone measuring 21 × 18 mm. Using CT navigation, the stone was located and removed intraorally. Salivary f

RATIONALE: When gland-preserving treatments are unsuccessful, sialoadenectomy is typically conducted for patients afflicted with submandibular gland diseases. The definitive treatment modality for these individuals is the removal of both the gland and the associated ducts. During surgery, the gland and the majority of the ducts can be excised utilizing the lateral transcervical approach, with residual ducts unlikely to develop pathology. After sialoadenectomy, the recurrence of salivary gland stones is extremely rare. Although there are some relevant speculations, to the best of our knowledge,

We present a simple and innovative sialendoscopy basket stone retrieval (BSR) simulator model composed mainly of a 1.0-mL insulin syringe with detachable needle whose lumen mimics a dilated salivary duct. Dried Guava seeds are used to imitate small-sized floating sialoliths. The BSR simulator is evaluated by sialendoscopy trainees to ensure its realism and efficiency. INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Salivary calculi represent the most common salivary gland disease. It can vary significantly in size, ranging from less than 1 mm to several centimeters. As the size of the stone increases, the surgical approach becomes more complex and the function of the gland may be compromised, potentially necessitating total gland removal. Successful outcomes depend on appropriate indications, precise surgical techniques, and comprehensive postoperative care.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old male presented with a chief complaint of pain and swelling in the submandibular regio

BACKGROUND: The precise localization of stones within the submandibular duct is crucial for the successful intraoral removal in sialolithiasis. Customizing surgical approaches based on the stone's ductal location is imperative. Particularly challenging are stones beneath the lingual nerve, requiring a landmark-guided approach due to their non-palpable nature. This study aimed to comprehend stone positioning, location-specific characteristics, and develop suitable surgical approaches. We conducted a thorough analysis of numerous preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans for this purpose.

PURPOSE: Intracorporeal lithotripsy is a gland-preserving treatment option for sialolithiasis. Laser lithotripsy (LL) and pneumatic lithotripsy (PL) are the only two methods currently approved, the latter being no longer available. Electrokinetic lithotripsy (EKL) is a promising alternative used for the treatment of ureteral stones. The aim of this study is to compare efficacy and therapeutical safety of EKL with LL and PL.
METHODS: StoneBreaker® (PL), Lithotron EL 27 Compact (EKL) and Ho:YAG laser Auriga (LL) were assessed using in vitro setups with human salivary stones, casted and tumbled

Obstructive salivary gland disease, commonly due to stones or ductal stenosis, often causes gland swelling, pain, and infection. While traditional treatments include conservative measures and surgical excision, sialendoscopy has emerged as a minimally invasive, gland-preserving approach. This technique allows for diagnostic visualization and concurrent treatment of intraductal pathology such as stones, stenosis, and inflammation. Office-based sialendoscopy offers additional benefits, including patient convenience, avoidance of general anesthesia, and reduced costs. Success relies on careful pa

Objectives: Since the peri- and intraoperative management of patients with inflammatory and obstructive sialadenitis (IOS) differs significantly between treating centers worldwide, we investigated whether these patients can be treated successfully, resource-savingly and with high patient satisfaction using minimally invasive procedures under local anesthesia (LA). Methods: We developed a comprehensive, stratified routine anesthesia and pain management protocol based on our proposed classification of invasiveness (grade 1-4), for almost all available IOS treatment procedures. We included 377 pa

Current trends in the management of sialolithiasis include a proper diagnosis with the help of a differential diagnosis. Cone beam computed tomography may be a good choice for detecting sialoliths because it is more sensitive than sonography. A practitioner should collect precise information about the stone in question, which includes the exact location of the calculus, its size and volume, and the number of calculi in a given case. For submandibular calculi, the orientation of the stone's location against the gonion and the inferior edge of the mandible creates the system of coordinates almos
