PURPOSE: For submandibular gland resection, conventional surgery with the naked eye remains the standard. With its excellent automatic focus and high magnification, the ORBEYE 3D exoscope enables precise submandibular gland resection with less stress. Therefore, we aimed to examine the usefulness of the exoscope in submandibular gland resection.
METHODS: This retrospective study involved 12 patients who underwent submandibular gland resection with the ORBEYE exoscope at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology at Kansai Medical University from April 2021 to March 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Sjögren's syndrome (SS) significantly elevates the risk of salivary gland lymphoma, primarily mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type, arising within chronic lymphoepithelial sialadenitis (LESA). Benign lymphoepithelial cysts (BLECs), common in SS, can radiologically mimic malignancy, posing diagnostic challenges when occult lymphoma develops.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old woman with established SS developed progressive bilateral parotid enlargement over years. Initial ultrasonography and CT imaging revealed bilateral septated cysts, ductal calculi, and heterogeneous gl

Sialocele is a relatively common post-traumatic complication of parotid gland interventions caused by localized saliva accumulation. Treatment guidelines are not well-established and currently rely on a stepwise management algorithm, with surgical treatment representing a definitive, last resort option. However, surgery often alleviates symptoms at the expense of compromising future gland function. Ductoplasty is a minimally invasive technique that has been previously described with success in treating parotid duct stenosis and sialolithiasis. However, its use has never been documented for tre

The sialolith is a calcified mass resulting from the crystallization of salivary solute made up of calcium phosphates such as hydroxyapatite and octacalcium phosphate with yellowish discoloration and different shapes and sizes in the range of 1-2 cm normally, while occurrence of large sialolithiasis is rare, with literature showing sizes from 3.5 cm to 7 cm noted till date. About 80% of sialolithiasis occurs in submandibular glands and 20% in parotid gland and <1% is seen with sublingual gland. For small sialolithiasis and for superficially located sialolithiasis at ductal regions, conservativ

BACKGROUND: The confusion between a phlebolith and a sialolith in the floor of the mouth can pose serious surgical risks, making it essential to define appropriate complementary imaging studies.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a patient with right submandibular sialolithiasis suspected by computed tomography. A previous attempt at extraction in another centre, under local anesthesia, was interrupted due to profuse bleeding, preventing the localization and removal of the calculi. Due to our pre-surgical study protocol using magnetic resonance sialography (MR-Si), a low-flow vascular

Sialolithiasis, the formation of calculi in the major salivary glands, is the leading cause of obstructive salivary disease and occurs predominantly in the submandibular gland. Traditional management of hilar or parenchymal stones has often required submandibular gland excision, which carries the risk of visible scarring and potential facial nerve injury. Sialendoscopy has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative for both diagnosis and treatment. Since its introduction in the 1990s and subsequent refinement, it has become standard therapy in Europe and North America, but in Japan, despite n

Sialolithiasis is a common cause of salivary gland obstruction, but cases with multiple stones are rare and challenging. We present a 32-year-old woman with several months of recurrent right parotid swelling and pain, especially during meals. Ultrasound revealed multiple hyperechoic foci, including an 11 mm stone near the second upper molar, and sialendoscopy enabled the successful removal of 32 stones ranging from 2 to 11 mm. A multistage extraction under general anesthesia with probe dilatation, micro-instruments, and baskets was completed without complications. At follow-up, the patient was

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Salivary stones, also known as sialoliths, are calcified structures that develop within the salivary glands and/or their ducts. They occur in approximately 1 per 10,000 to 30,000 individuals per year, primarily affecting adults between 30 and 50 years of age. Although several hypotheses have been proposed, the exact mechanisms of formation and their predisposing factors are yet to be confirmed. The submandibular gland is the most commonly affected site, accounting for nearly 80% of cases, while giant and asymptomatic sialoliths are rare clinical findings in dental practi

Sialolithiasis is a rare condition in cats. An 8-year-old neutered female European domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for halitosis, reduced appetite and weight loss. General physical examination was unremarkable, except for a low body condition score. A complete oral examination revealed generalized periodontal disease and tooth resorption. Full-mouth radiographs confirmed the presence of multiple teeth affected by tooth resorption. Additionally, dental radiographs also identified a radiopaque calcified structure adjacent to the caudal part of the body of the left mandibular bone. Different

PURPOSE: To evaluate how stone location and size influence surgical approach selection in submandibular sialolithiasis, and to identify computed tomography (CT)-based imaging predictors to aid preoperative planning.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 428 consecutive surgeries (March 2020-December 2024). Preoperative non-contrast CT classified stones as distal duct, mid-duct, hilum, or intraglandular. Surgical approaches were transoral ductal incision, sialendoscopy-assisted removal, and external submandibular gland excision. Group comparisons used standard parametric/non-parametric tests. R
