The parotid duct has been reported to be the most common site of sialoliths in horses. In this case report, we described the first confirmed case of the equine sialolithiasis in Slovakia. The work was aimed to describe the transcutaneous approach to removing the sialolith, which manifested as a hard painless mass in the area of the maxillary cheek teeth, in a 14-year-old Slovakian warmblood mare. Pathological-anatomical and histological examination after extirpation confirmed the presence of parotid duct ectasia resulting from calculus. The mineral composition of the sialolith was determined w

The Sclerosing subtype of mucoepidermoid carcinoma is rare, with only 39 cases reported in literature. We present a new case of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma (SMEC) with MAML2 rearrangements. A 49-year-old woman with Sjögren's syndrome experienced recurrent submandibular sialadenitis and sialolithiasis, leading to the removal of her right gland. Postoperative imaging revealed a calcified mass in her left gland which was subsequently resected. The pathologic examination revealed a well-defined tumor with extensive fibrous stroma, predominantly epidermoid cells, and occasional mucinous com

RATIONALE: Haemangiomas are benign vascular malformations. They are common neoplasms of infancy but seldom manifest at birth. Although common in the head & neck region, they are rare in the submandibular region. Despite being benign, surgical treatment is necessary if it causes significant functional or aesthetic compromise.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient's primary complaint was swelling in the submandibular region.
DIAGNOSIS: Initial examination and imaging studies were suggestive of sialolithiasis due to the presence of multiple calcifications. Ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imagin

BACKGROUND: Parotid sialolithiasis is a common condition in middle-aged individuals, with most cases occurring in the submandibular and sublingual glands, followed by the parotid glands and minor salivary glands. The treatment of salivary gland stones, particularly those of the parotid glands, remains challenging. Endoscopic surgery using a yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG)-holmium laser for parotid sialolithiasis is a minimally invasive approach that provides effective treatment for patients. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of the endoscopic laser treatment of parotid sialolithiasis a Y

The process of stone formation in the human body remains incompletely understood, which requires clinical and laboratory studies and the formulation of a new endogenous, nanotechnological concept of the mechanism of origin and formation of crystallization centers. Previously, the mechanism of sialolithiasis was considered a congenital disease associated with the pathology of the ducts in the structure of the glands themselves. To date, such morphological changes of congenital nature can be considered from the position of the intrauterine formation of endogenous bacterial infections complicated

Recently, SPECT/CT plays an important role in assessing patients with head and neck lesions. The aim of this study was performed to investigate the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) for parotid and submandibular glands in patients with Sjögren's syndrome and submandibular sialolithiasis using salivary gland SPECT/CT. A prospective study was performed in 45 patients with 32 Sjögren's syndrome and 13 submandibular sialolithiasis who underwent salivary gland SPECT/CT. The SUVmax of parotid and submandibular glands was obtained using a workstation and software. The salivary secretion func

This study aimed to determine the value of either ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) alone or both for diagnosing salivary gland stones. Based on their clinical findings and physical examination, 188 patients with salivary stones were included. Initially, an ultrasound was performed, and then a non-contrast-enhanced thin-sliced CT scan was done. The study included 161 patients with suspected submandibular gland (SMG) sialolithiasis and 27 with parotid gland (PG) sialolithiasis. Among the SMG cases, stones were confirmed in 130 patients through interventional sialoendoscopy. Sixteen o

OBJECTIVE: The role of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in the pathological processes of the gastric mucosa is well understood. Decreasing trend in successful eradication of HP from the stomach was observed in last years. This lack of succes is mainly caused by increasing ATB resistance. Nevertheless other possible causes of this phenomenon are being explored. Thus, many studies have focused on the search for extragastric reservoirs as potential sources of persistence or reinfection after successful Hp eradication. The pathological potential of Hp at these localities has also been studied.
METHODS: O

Sialolithiasis is among the most common pathological conditions of the salivary glands. It is characterized by blockage of the salivary gland excretory duct or by the formation of calcareous concretions, resulting in salivary stasis and causing salivary gland swelling. Most sialoliths generally arise in the submandibular gland and duct. The size of sialoliths ranges from around 1 mm to 10 mm, with some exceeding 15 mm in dimension. Numerous conservative treatments, including milking and palliative therapy, are effective for accessible small stones. Surgical intervention is necessary when the s

Sialolithiasis is a common disease of the salivary glands. This report describes a rare case of a submandibular gland sialolithiasis that grew over an extended period. The patient was a 72-year-old woman who presented with a mass in the right submandibular gland that had remained untreated for approximately 34 years. She had noticed the mass from the beginning, but had ignored it as it had caused no pain. She was eventually referred to our hospital, however, because panoramic X-ray images taken at another facility showed that it had grown over the previous 10 years. Extraoral findings at our c

OBJECTIVES: Sialendoscopy has become the standard treatment for sialolithiasis; however, larger submandibular calculi may require an incisional technique. This study describes and evaluates an intraoral microscopic-assisted sialolithotomy (IMAS) as a refined submandibular stone extraction technique.
METHODS: Retrospective case series of 64 submandibular IMAS procedures operated at a tertiary university center and private hospital from 2015 to 2021 were evaluated. Preoperative radiological assessment included noncontrast computed tomography scan ± magnetic resonance sialography. Stone characte

Most sialolithiasis occurs in the submandibular glands, which are highly related to the anatomy and secretory function of the submandibular glands. The authors report an 18-year-old patient with multiple submandibular gland duct stones combined with submandibular neurilemmoma. The course of diagnosis and treatment is highlighted, and the causes of the formation of multiple stones in this patient are analyzed.

Sialolith-induced obstructive sialadenitis is a commonly encountered clinical scenario, yet the variations in the size and location of the stone can complicate immediate clinical assessment. Utilizing dynamic ultrasound imaging along with specific structural markers can provide valuable, immediate objective evidence in diagnosing submandibular sialolithiasis. This initial ultrasound evaluation streamlines the decision-making process by facilitating the timely scheduling of confirmatory computed tomography scans and guiding subsequent surgical interventions. This case report illustrates how in-

Salivary gland diseases encompass a broad range of conditions, including autoimmune, inflammatory, obstructive, and neoplastic disorders, significantly impacting oral health and overall well-being. Recent research has highlighted the crucial role of exosomes, small extracellular vesicles, in these diseases. Exosomes mediate intercellular communication by transferring bioactive molecules such as proteins, microRNAs, and lipids, positioning them as potential diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic agents. In primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), exosomes derived from Epstein-Barr virus-infected B cell

INTRODUCTION: Cheek fistulas of salivary origin in children are very rare, predominantly of congenital or traumatic origin but rarely caused by parotid sialolithiasis given its low prevalence in paediatric populations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old child with no history other than substantial left-cheek swelling for 2 months was referred. We identified a cutaneous fistula with seropurulent discharge. At this time, we only observed mild inflammation of the left parotid duct papilla with no visible calculi. A first ultrasound scan only detected acute inflammation of the parotid duct that was
