Management of a Recurrent Lower Lip Mucocele in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Mucoceles are common, benign cystic lesions of the minor salivary glands, most often found on the lower lip of young patients. While they are usually diagnosed clinically, histopathological examination is essential for confirmation and to rule out other lesions. The primary etiology is trauma to the salivary gland duct, which leads to the extravasation of mucus and the formation of a pseudocyst.  This case report details the successful surgical excision of a recurrent lower lip mucocele in a 13-year-old female patient. The patient had a history of recurrence following a prior laser surgery. A

Odontogenic Cutaneous Fistula-Induced Submandibular Abscess in a Dog: A Rare Presentation.

Odontogenic cutaneous fistulas (OCFs) are relatively uncommon in veterinary patients. They are typically caused by chronic periapical infections of the maxillary teeth. Mandibular OCFs that extend through the cortical bone into submandibular soft tissues are extremely rare. This report describes the case of a 14-year-old male mixed-breed dog that presented with a submandibular cutaneous lesion initially misdiagnosed as a salivary mucocele. OCFs are frequently misdiagnosed because atypical presentations may lack obvious intraoral abnormalities and mimic salivary gland disease, lymphadenopathy,

Identification of novel genomic regions associated with yield-related traits in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp) landraces.

BACKGROUND: Hypersplenism is commonly seen in patients with non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH). While a splenectomy alone can effectively relieve the hypersplenism, it does not address the underlying portal hypertension. The present study was undertaken to analyze the impact of shunt and non-shunt operations on the resolution of hypersplenism in patients with NCPH. The relationship of symptomatic hypersplenism, severe hypersplenism and number of peripheral cell line defects to the severity of portal hypertension and outcome was also assessed. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of NCPH pa

Acute effects of motor learning models on technical efficiency in strength-coordination exercises: a comparative analysis of Olympic snatch biomechanics in beginners.

Despite the development of various motor learning models over many decades, the question of which model is most effective under which conditions to optimize the acquisition of skills remains a heated and recurring debate. This is particularly important in connection with learning sports movements with a high strength component. This study aims to examine the acute effects of various motor learning models on technical efficiency and force production during the Olympic snatch movement. In a within-subject design, sixteen highly active male participants (mean age: 23.13 ± 2.09 years), who were ab

Ectopic Salivary Glands - a Differential Diagnosis to a Thyroglossal Duct Cyst.

Background: Midline developmental neck lesions primarily consist of thyroglossal duct remnants. Their recurrence is uncommon following thorough resection, which includes hyoid removal (the Sistrunk procedure). Case report: A 3-year-old girl presented with mucoid secretion drainage and swelling in the anterior mid-neck region, clinically resembling a thyroglossal duct remnant. Following an initial Sistrunk procedure, the lesion recurred, prompting a subsequent resection. Histological analysis revealed a mucocele alongside acinar and mucous ectopic salivary glands. Conclusions: The ectopic saliv

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the retromolar pad region: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of the most common salivary gland malignancies, mostly occurs in the major and minor salivary glands in the oral and maxillofacial region. The development of ACC in the retromolar pad is extremely rare, which limits establishing proper diagnosis and management. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A patient described a 2-month history of finding a mass behind the lower left posterior teeth. Based on the physical examination and radiographic findings, we got an initial impression of a benign mucocele, the nature of which was to be investigated further. Path

Understanding the Distinction Between Traumatic Fibroma and Mucocele in Pediatric Patients: A Report of Two Cases.

Traumatic fibroma is a reactive oral cavity lesion that manifests as a localized, non-neoplastic, inflammatory hyperplastic papule of fibrous connective tissue. Alternatively, mucocele is another frequent oral lesion, caused by mucus pooling in the tissues as a result of trauma to minor salivary glands. This article aims to shed light on traumatic fibroma and mucocele of the lower lip in pediatric patients. Two pediatric patients complained of soft tissue growth on the left side of the lower lip. Appropriate diagnosis, treatment planning, and light amplification by stimulated emission of radia

A Rare Case of Low-Grade B-cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma of the Lower Lip Mimicking a Mucocele.

In a clinical context, oral lymphomas are very uncommon and frequently challenging to identify. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are a diverse category of lymphomas that were formerly believed to be formed from B-cells located in the marginal zone, which surrounds B-cell follicles and the surrounding lymphoepithelium. Extranodal organs like the stomach, thyroid, and large salivary glands are where they most frequently appear. As a result, they are accurately identified as extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphomas (ENMZL). This report presents a case of a 53-year-old female wi

Utility of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology in fine needle aspiration cytology of minor salivary gland lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland lesions are routinely evaluated by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) preoperatively. The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) has standardized salivary gland FNAC reporting. Its application in major salivary glands (MSGs) has been well-established; however, its utility in minor salivary glands (MiSGs) is not well-known. We studied the utility of MSRSGC in MiSG FNAC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective search of MiSG FNACs from 2 academic institutions (2006-2023) was performed. FNACs were classified using the MSRSGC. Histologic d

An unusual clinical presentation of a plunging ranula-The plunging ranula with extension to the vallecula.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: A plunging ranula may present initially as an extensive vallecular cyst and correct diagnosis may be reached with the use of ultrasound, fluid aspiration for amylase detection, and MRI imaging. ABSTRACT: The ranula is a pseudocyst of the sublingual salivary gland and can be divided into two known subtypes. The simple ranula and plunging ranula. While the simple type can be found in the floor of the mouth, the plunging ranula usually pervades the mylohoid muscle and presents as a cervical swelling. The presented case should outline the difficulties in diagnostic and treat

Pediatric Oral Mucocele Management: A Case Series Investigating Different Treatment Approaches.

A mucocele is a benign cystic lesion containing clear fluid within a thin capsule, typically resulting from the disruption of minor salivary glands and leakage into surrounding tissues, most commonly on the lower lip. These lesions often arise due to traumatic injuries such as lip-sucking, biting, or trauma from orthodontic appliances. This study compares different surgical methods for mucocele removal in pediatric patients through three distinct cases. This study includes three pediatric cases of mucocele removal using different surgical methods. Case 1 involved a nine-year-old girl with a tr

Macrocystic secretory carcinoma arising from the buccal minor salivary gland clinically mimicking a mucocele: A case report.

Secretory carcinoma (SC) is an uncommon salivary gland tumor that has been recently conceptualized. The present report describes a case of SC that was diagnosed as a mucocele on preoperative examination. A 46-year-old man presented to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Saiseikai Senri Hospital (Suita-shi, Japan) with a main complaint of swelling of the right buccal mucosa. A mobile, elastic, hard mass was found beneath the right normal-appearing buccal mucosa. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined, internally homogeneous high-signal area with a maximum

Nonsurgical Treatment of Oral Mucocele With Intralesional Corticosteroid Injections: A Case Report.

Oral mucoceles are common lesions resulting from alterations in minor salivary glands due to mucus accumulation. Deleterious habits such as lip biting, sucking, or trauma from oral appliances can result in the occurrence of mucoceles. Although conventional surgical removal has been the preferred treatment option, it is associated with drawbacks, including the risk of damaging nearby ducts and the formation of satellite lesions. A 13-year-old male patient visited the department with a sessile, nodular, and exophytic lesion on the lower lip and a persistent history of traumatic lip biting. The t
