360 cases of salivary glands cysts (= 6%) were collected in the Salivary Glands Register (Institute of Pathology, University of Hamburg) from 1965 until 1979 among a total of 5739 register cases. 273 cases of the cystic lesions (= 76%) were mucoceles of the minor salivary glands. The analysis of these 273 cases revealed the following results: 1. Two types of mucoceles can be morphologically distinguished: extravasation mucoceles and retention mucoceles. 2. The extravasation mucocele is in our material (240 cases = 88.7%) the most frequent type of mucocele. The term "extravasation mucocele" of

Cystic dilatation of the parotid duct of a goat was diagnosed by exploratory surgery and analysis of cyst contents. The cyst and its associated salivary gland were surgically removed. This case is compared with the more common salivary mucocele.

Zygomatic salivary mucoceles were diagnosed in 2 dogs. Ophthalmologic signs differed in both cases and reflected the position of the mucocele in relation to the orbit. Cytology of aspirated material and sialography were performed in both cases, but his enabled confirmation of the diagnosis in only one. Surgical excision of the zygomatic salivary gland, with drainage of the mucocele, was curative in both cases. Both dogs had a history of trauma to the head.

Three cases are reported to illustrate certain features related to swellings of the salivary glands. With a mucocele of the floor of the mouth difficulites may arise in the correct identification of the gland of origin, in elucidating the aetiological factors, and in obtaining adequate radiographic or sialographic views of the area. Surgical treatment follows the surgical removal of the involved gland.

Three major disease groups emerge from a classification of the pathohistology of 2,600 salivary gland preparations in the salivary gland register (from 1965 to 1974): salivary gland tumors (41%), salivary gland inflammations (26%), and sialadenosis (6%). Mucoceles (2%) and salivary gland cysts (1.5%) are seen less often. It is diagnostically important that lymph node changes in the area of the salivary glands (lymphadenitis, lymphomas, etc.) are worked up under suspicion of a primary salivary gland disease. Sialadenosis involves a primary, vegetative neuropathy, which is accompanied by enlarge

A survey of natural mucoceles revealed that there were two types, namely, extravasation and retention, and that extravasation mucocceles occurred most often in younger patients and in the lower lip, whereas retention mucoceles occurred most often in older patients and elsewhere in the mouth.

A case of solitary intraductal papilloma of a minor salivary gland is presented. The lesion was diagnosed clinically as a mucocele and has not recurred in 6 months of observation. This case is compared, on the basis of clinical data and histomorphologic findings, to three other known cases. Discussion is made of the role this lesion might play in the etiology of ductal obstruction, and the histologic findings of the intraductal papilloma of minor salivary glands and the solitary intraductal papilloma of the breast are compared.
