Diode laser removal of lower lip mucocele: a case report.

Mucocele is a common benign cyst pathology of minor salivary glands of the oral mucosa. The most common location for these lesions is the lower lip. It mainly occurs due to chronic trauma or habit of lip biting or sucking. Such parafunctional habits lead to the alteration of minor salivary glands and mucous accumulation. This case report presents a patient with lower lip mucocele resulting from a lip-sucking habit due to the presence of maxillary central incisor midline diastema. The mucocele removal was performed with a diode laser, and the midline diastema was closed with composite in order

Superficial mucoceles as a sequel to Stevens‑Johnson syndrome during treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with cemiplimab: A case report and review of literature.

Superficial mucoceles (SM) are small, benign, translucent vesicles, which develop in the oral mucosa, mainly on the lower lip, due to a rupture of minor salivary gland ducts and the extravasation of saliva. The use of immune checkpoint blockade treatment may lead to dermatologic immune-related adverse events in 40-50% of patients and with severe dermatologic immune adverse events of Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events of grade G3-G4 in 1-2% of patients. The present study described the case of a patient with squamous cell carcinoma treated with cemiplimab with the adverse effect of S

Cytomegalovirus in Adenoma and Carcinoma Lesions: Detecting Mono-Infection and Co-Infection in Salivary Glands.

Salivary glands' neoplasms are hard to diagnose and present a complex etiology. However, several viruses have been detected in these neoplasms, such as HCMV, which can play a role in certain cancers through oncomodulation. The co-infections between HCMV with betaherpesviruses (HHV-6 and HHV-7) and polyomaviruses (JCV and BKV) has been investigated. The aim of the current study is to describe the frequency of HCMV and co-infections in patients presenting neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions, including in the salivary gland. Multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used for betaherp

Salivary Gland Disorders: Rapid Evidence Review.

The major salivary glands are the paired parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Salivary gland disorders can affect the glandular tissue or its excretory system. The parotid glands are the largest and produce aqueous serous secretions that are less immunogenic. They are more susceptible to infections and neoplasms. The submandibular glands produce mucinous secretions that are high in calcium and phosphate salts through a long submandibular duct that flows against gravity. The submandibular glands are responsible for more than 80% of salivary stones. Sialadenitis can be acute or chronic

Clinical characteristics of oral chronic graft-versus-host disease according to the 2014 National Institutes of Health (USA) consensus criteria.

BACKGROUND: Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) is a serious and common complication of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT). The oral cavity is the second most common site affected by cGVHD. In 2014, the 2005 National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus criteria were revised to address areas of controversy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics of oral cGVHD using the 2014 NIH consensus criteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The baseline data of oral manifestation of patients, who were diagnosed with oral cGVHD, in the first dental visit were a

New Conservative Approach for the Management of Recurrent Sublingual Ranula-A Case Report.

Ranula is a rare and benign extravasation mucocele that is clinically characterized by asymptomatic sublingual or submandibular masses. Surgical excision is considered the most effective treatment approach, but it has been associated with high invasiveness and several complications (hemorrhage, damage to Wharton's duct, and lingual nerve injury). Over the past decade, more conservative therapies have been rapidly disseminated into clinical practice to seek a more effective and less traumatic approach for young patients. In this report, an 8-year-old female with an asymptomatic, recurrent subli

Multifocal intraoral ductal ectasia with metaplasia and focal epithelial proliferation: A case report.

Ductal ectasia with metaplasia and focal epithelial proliferation in the oral cavity does not correspond to any existing salivary gland lesion. A 72-year-old man presented with a mass in the buccal mucosa, which was excised and initially diagnosed as a cystadenoma. An upper lip mass on the right side, which developed later, was also excised. The lesions were histologically similar, and since they were multifocal and in non-contiguous and independent sites with multiple dilated cystic structures that did not destroy the lobar architecture, the final diagnosis was confirmed as ductal ectasia wit

Diagnostic Findings and Surgical Management of Three Dogs Affected by Osseous Metaplasia Secondary to a Salivary Mucocele.

Saliva is an irritant of the subcutaneous tissue, thus causing the development of a non-epithelial reactive pseudocapsule. Metaplastic ossification of the pseudocapsule is a condition rarely described in the veterinary literature. The main causes of calcification are trauma, tumours, various chronic inflammatory conditions and fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. The aim of the present case series was to describe three dogs affected by a calcified salivary mucocele. The medical records of dogs affected by a cervical sialocele were retrospectively evaluated, and three cases met the inclusion

[Oral retention and extravasation mucoceles of the minor salivary glands - more common than you might think!].

Oral mucoceles are cystic changes in the minor salivary glands caused by traumatic damage to the salivary gland ducts or their obstruction with subsequent salivary congestion. In extravasation mucocele, saliva leaks from the ruptured duct into the surrounding tissue and causes a local inflammatory reaction. Thus, histopathologically, granulation tissue is seen around the salivary fluid, but no epithelial lining.

Intraoral Lipoma: A Case Report.

The soft tissue tumor lipoma is quite frequent. Although it is the most mesenchymal tumor of the trunk and proximal regions of the extremities, it is quite uncommon to find it on the oral mucosa, accounting for just 1% to 5% of benign oral tumors. There is no specific location that is more prone to lipoma development in the mouth. Some frequent sites are the tongue, buccal mucosa, and the mouth's floor. A Yellowish mass with no symptoms is the normal clinical appearance. In most cases, the overlaying epithelium is unharmed, and superficial blood vessels may be seen passing through and around t

A rare case of submandibular mucocele extending into the oral cavity: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Salivary mucoceles, originating from major and minor salivary glands, rarely affect the submandibular gland, accounting for just 0.6 % of its tumors and cysts. With only 18 case reports in the literature to date, their occurrence in this location is infrequent. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 9-year-old male with no relevant medical history who developed progressive submandibular swelling extending into the oral cavity. CT scan confirmed a submandibular gland mucocele. Surgical treatment involved excision of the mucocele along with the submandibular and sublin

Unusual presentation of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) on lip mimicking mucocele: A rare case report with review.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively rare, slow-growing low-grade malignant salivary gland tumour with high recurrence. It accounts for 1% of all malignant tumour of the oral and maxillofacial region. A high incidence of cases occurs between the fifth and sixth decades of life. Surgical excision with required radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and combined therapy are possible treatment choices. In this present case, a 36-year-old male patient was diagnosed with ACC on the upper lip. The clinical presentation of this lesion resembled mucocele. There are only a few cases reported of ACC invo
