IL-6 Contributes to the TGF-β1-Mediated Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition in Human Salivary Gland Epithelial Cells.

To determine the role of IL-6 in bringing about the EMT, in SGEC obtained from healthy subjects. Human salivary gland (SGs) epithelial cells (SGEC) from primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) are able to synthesize interleukin (IL)-6, which is a critical mediator of the SGs modifications in response to chronic inflammation. Recently, a hypothetical link between epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-dependent salivary gland fibrosis and chronic inflammatory conditions has been suggested for pSS; the present study was conducted to evaluate this link. Primary cultures of human SGEC from salivary muco

Recurrent Oral Mucocele Management with Diode Laser.

BACKGROUND: Mucocele is the most common minor salivary glands disease. Its management may present a challenge for dental professionals. The aim of the present clinical case was to describe mucocele treatment with diode laser and its benefits. Case Report. A case of lower lip mucocele in a 10-year-old female patient is reported. A conventional excision surgery was performed. Two months later, the patient reported discomfort and swelling at the same operative site. The lesion had recurred. Thus, mucocele was removed using a diode laser with wavelength of 980 nm, an initiated fiberoptic tip of 30

Laryngeal oncocytic cystadenoma mimicking a combined laryngomucocele.

Laryngeal oncocytic cystadenomas are rare benign tumours lined by oncocytic epithelium and arising from the salivary glands; they usually present as a supraglottic mass. Oncocytic changes are very uncommon in the larynx and occur mainly in ventricles and false vocal cords, where seromucinous glands predominate. The authors present the case of a 62-year-old woman who reported a 6-month history of hoarseness associated with a soft and non-compressible upper left side neck swelling. Transnasal fiberoptic laryngoscopy revealed a left submucosal supraglottic mass involving the false vocal fold and

Oral acute graft versus host disease after donor lymphocyte infusions: Clinicopathological characterization in a monocenter cohort.

Donor lymphocyte infusions (DLI) are used after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) in order to boost the graft-versus-tumor effect. The most significant toxicity is acute or chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), whose clinical symptoms mirror those occurring after HSCT. By contrast, oral acute GVHD lesions have been exceptionally described post-DLI. We report on a monocenter cohort of 12 adult patients that developed oral acute GVHD after DLI. The majority was treated for acute myeloid leukemia. A total of 29 DLI treatments were applied and the median time between the last DLI and t

Surgical Management of Oral Mucocele: Experience with Marsupialization.

Oral mucoceles are a common and nagging problem. They are proposed to be a result of damage to the minor salivary gland structure, resulting in retention or extravasation of saliva which leads to these cystic lesions. The lesions may often resolve spontaneously but frequently recur, or even epithelialize over long periods of time. This study reports the results of surgical management of oral mucocele by marsupialization. Even though, a complete surgical removal is considered the treatment of choice for oral mucocele, it has associated disadvantages including a longer recovery period and potent

Identification of predictive variables for the recurrence of oral mucocele.

BACKGROUND: Oral mucocele is the most common minor salivary gland lesion with good prognosis after surgical removal. However, its recurrence is not rare, sometimes bothersome. This study aimed to identify the possible predictive variables affecting the recurrence rate of oral mucocele. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The histoclinical data of 164 patients diagnosed with oral mucocele were retrospectively obtained by reviewing dental records. The predictive variables for its recurrence were identified by analyzing its recurrence rate according to clinical variables. RESULTS: The recurrence rate showed

Sublingual sialocele in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 1-year-old male neutered cat was presented with a right-sided swelling of the floor of the oral cavity, causing dysphagia and hypersialorrhoea for 2 months. Fine-needle aspiration of the mass and CT were suggestive of a right sublingual sialocoele with no obvious cause. Surgical resection of the ipsilateral sublingual-mandibular salivary gland complex, as well as marsupialisation of the mucocoele, was performed. The cat recovered uneventfully. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis. No sign of recurrence was reported 7 months after surger

Mucoceles of the anterior ventral surface of the tongue and the glands of Blandin-Nuhn: 5 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Mucoceles are cystic diseases of the oral mucosa. The most common are ranula and mococeles of the lower lip. Blandin and Nuhn mucoceles, which develop at the ventral side of the tongue, are rare benign lesions. They are often misdiagnosed and sometimes confused with ranula. The recommended treatment is a complete surgical excision of the gland. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe 5 clinical cases managed in service between 2009 and 2016. Clinical cases are presented in order to detail their clinical history, paraclinical and treatment. RESULTS: The clinical appearance is a longit

Sjögren's syndrome and ranula development.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that the extravasation of saliva from damaged ducts with lymphocytic infiltration in patients with Sjögren's syndrome causes ranulas. There are too many uncertainties to support this hypothesis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is an association between Sjögren's syndrome and ranulas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We observed three cases of patients with ranulas who were also diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome at the same facility. These cases led to the question of whether there are other such cases, and thus, an exhaustive literature search was cond

The anatomical basis and rational for the transoral approach during the surgical excision of the sublingual salivary gland for the management of plunging ranula.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to illustrate and confirm that the complete intraoral excision of the sublingual gland alone, is anatomically the most rational approach, for the management of plunging ranula. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical charts of diagnosed HIV-infected patients presenting with plunging ranula. The intraoral approach was used for the complete excision of the sublingual gland with evacuation of the pseudocystic content only. Neither extra oral approach, nor ranula dissection / drainage was performed. The surgical procedure was performed using l

Intraoral salivary duct cyst: Report of rare entity.

Salivary duct cysts (SDCs) are true cysts caused by obstruction of the salivary ducts and are rare in minor salivary glands. A 62-year-old male reported with a painless swelling in the left buccal mucosa for 2 years. Excision of the entire lesion was performed under local anesthesia following which histopathological examination was performed. Microscopically, a dilated salivary gland duct composed of 1-2 layers of cuboidal cells with intraluminal mucous plug was observed. Cystic lumen lined by mucous cells, squamous cells and ciliated cells was seen. Oncocytic metaplasia was also present at va

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma mimicking a mucocele (ranula) in the floor of the mouth.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common salivary gland malignancy. The submandibular gland is rarely involved, about less than 10% of all other major salivary glands. We report a case of a 49-year-old female who presented with a mass on the left side of the floor of the mouth. She was complaining of neck pain for the last 2-3 days and had noticed the mass growing in size and becoming tender to palpation. There was no exacerbation of pain during eating, drinking, or opening of mouth. A multidetector CT scan was made. The radiographic examination revealed a mostly well-defined hypodens
