Mucoceles of the lesser salivary glands in neonates demonstrate a particular clinicopathological pattern and mandate urgent management.

Mucoceles of the lesser salivary glands are common benign lesions affecting all ages, most commonly appearing on the lower lip. However, mucoceles in neonates demonstrate a different clinicopathological pattern than in older children or adults and mandate urgent management. We present a case of a large mucocele on the tongue of a neonate, which impaired feeding and could block the airway. The lesion was resected on the 3rd day of life. We describe a surgical technique that facilitates this procedure. Our literature review revealed 13 neonatal lesser salivary gland mucocele cases, 7 of which we

Treating Mucocele in Pediatric Patients Using a Diode Laser: Three Case Reports.

A mucocele is the most common minor salivary gland disease and among the most common biopsied oral lesions in pediatric patients. Clinically, a mucocele appears as a round well-circumscribed painless swelling ranging from deep blue to mucosa alike in color. Mucoceles rarely resolve on their own and surgical removal under local anesthesia is required in most cases. Different treatment options are described in the literature, including cryosurgery, intra-lesion injection of corticosteroid, micro-marsupialization and conventional surgical removal using a scalpel, and laser ablation. Therefore, th

Multiple superficial oral mucoceles after Mycoplasma-induced mucositis.

Oral mucoceles are lesions arising mainly from the minor salivary glands and are thought to occur after excretory duct trauma. We report a case of multiple superficial oral mucoceles on a child's labial mucosa after Mycoplasma pneumoniae mucositis. Mucoceles can mimic persistent or recurrent stomatitis and lead to potential errors in management.

Diode Laser-Assisted Surgical Therapy for Early Treatment of Oral Mucocele in a Newborn Patient: Case Report and Procedures Checklist.

Mucocele (also known as ranula or salivary gland mucous cyst) of the newborn is a lesion present on the intraoral cavity, with the potential to interfere with respiration and feeding. In the present report, a case of mucocele in a 4-month female patient has been described. As conventional surgery can be followed by several complications such as intraoperative bleeding, difficulties in wound healing, and maintenance of sterility during surgery, in the present case, the use of diode laser has been planned. A topic anesthesia with lidocaine gel was performed. A diode laser (810 nm wavelength, con

Cross-contamination of the human salivary gland HSG cell line with HeLa cells: A STR analysis study.

OBJECTIVES: The human salivary gland (HSG) cell line, labeled as a submandibular ductal cell line, is commonly used as in vitro models to study radiation therapy, Sjögren's syndrome, pleomorphic adenoma, mucocele, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, and epigenetics. However, the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) has recently released a list of cross-contaminated cell lines that included HSG. Despite this notice, some research laboratories still use HSG as a salivary cell model. Therefore, this study examined the authenticity of HSG sampled from three different laboratories. METHODS: D

The efficacy of polidocanol sclerotherapy in mucocele of the minor salivary gland.

OBJECTIVES: Mucocele of the minor salivary gland is usually caused when the duct is injured, mucus leaks into the tissue space and the mucous gland are obstructed, which lead to cystic lesion formation and dilatation. Currently, there are multiple therapeutic methods available with various outcomes. This study aims to provide clinical evidence of polidocanol sclerotherapy for the treatment of mucocele of the minor salivary gland. METHODS: In this study, we injected polidocanol into 112 patients who were diagnosed with mucocele of the minor salivary gland and evaluated the treatment efficacy a

Sublingual gland excision for the surgical management of plunging ranula.

OBJECTIVE: A plunging ranula is a pseudocystic collection of mucin extravasated from the sublingual gland into the floor of mouth and through the mylohyoid muscle into the neck. While the lining of a ranula is non-secreting and resection of the sublingual gland is adequate for simple sublingual mucoceles, many surgeons attempt to address plunging ranulas with extensive transoral and transcervical dissections. We review our experience managing plunging ranulas with intraoral sublingual gland excision and ranula drainage alone. METHODS: This is a case series of patients with plunging ranulas wh

Blandin and Nuhn mucocele in a pediatric patient.

Oral mucoceles are benign lesions that may appear in any location on the mucosal surfaces of the oral cavity where underlying minor salivary glands are found. The lower lip is the most frequently affected and the most widely reported location. Mucoceles involving the glands of Blandin and Nuhn are infrequent and constitute only about 1.9%-10.3% of the reported cases. Superficial mucoceles are a rare subtype of the Blandin and Nuhn mucoceles and are found only in 4.3%-10% of the mucocele excisions. The purpose of this report is to present a case of a superficial mucocele in the ventral surface

Dysgenetic Polycystic Disease of Minor Salivary Gland: A Rare Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Polycystic (dysgenetic) disease of the salivary glands is a rare entity that has only recently been described in the literature. The disease is more commonly seen in females and majority of the cases have presented as bilateral parotid gland swellings. This case presenting in a 21-year-old male is the first of this unusual entity involving solely the minor salivary gland on the lower lip. This case report highlights the importance for the clinician to be aware of this differential diagnosis, when treating an innocuous lesion like a mucocele.

The activation of Akt/mTOR pathway by bleomycin in Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition of human submandibular gland cells: A treatment mechanism of bleomycin for mucoceles of the salivary glands.

OBJECTIVE: Bleomycin (BLM) has been found safe and highly effective in the treatment of the mucoceles by intralesional injection in our previous study. The present research was designed to investigate whether epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) contributes to the therapeutic effects of BLM for mucoceles of the salivary glands. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cell proliferation and apoptosis of human submandibular gland cells (HSG cells) were examined by Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and Annexin V binding assay respectively. Epithelial and mesenchymal markers of HSG cells were measured by real-ti

Mucocele on Lower Lip: A Case Series.

Mucocele is a common salivary gland disorder that can appear in the lacrimal sac, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, appendix, or gall bladder. These lesions occur due to mucous accumulation resulting from the alteration of minor salivary glands. Lower lip is the most common site of occurrence of these lesions in the oral cavity and most probable cause is trauma or habit of lip biting. Diagnosis is mainly clinical due to its pathognomonic presentation. We report a case series of mucocele in children treated by conventional surgical excision of the lesion.

Simultaneous, congenital, mucocoele of the Blandin-Nühn glands and teratoma of the tongue: early management and follow up at one year.

Mucocoele of the Blandin-Nühn glands and teratomas of the tongue are rare in newborn babies. We present what is to our knowledge the first documented case of both at the same time, and describe management and follow up over 12 months after the birth. Prenatal diagnosis defined the treatment plan during delivery to establish an airway for the baby promptly. A normal delivery is possible if the cyst is anterior, and can be punctured during delivery. Delayed excision reduces the possibility of oedema and obstruction of the airway, ensures complete resection, avoids recurrence, and confirms the di

Cytological spectrum of salivary gland lesions and their correlation with epidemiological parameters.

BACKGROUND: The role fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions has evolved over the years. Although clinical and radiological parameters help to narrow the differential diagnosis the tissue diagnosis still remains the gold standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is from January 2013 to December 2015 in our Department of Pathology where 170 salivary gland lesions were aspirated. The aim of the present study was to analyze adequacy rate in relation to the size of lesion and to evaluate varied cytological spectrum of salivary gland lesions with emphasis on diffe

Diode Laser Assisted Excision and Low Level Laser Therapy in the Management of Mucus Extravasation Cysts: A Case Series.

Introduction: Mucus extravasation cyst is a commonly occurring lesion in oral cavity that may result from traumatic severance of a salivary gland duct with subsequent extravasation of mucus into fibrous connective tissue. After a conventional excision or marsupialization, recurrence is not uncommon. Diode laser offers an effective modality for management of such lesions. Case Reports: Four patients were referred with painless fluctuant swellings on labial and buccal mucosa. After recording history and clinical examination, provisional diagnosis of mucocele was made. All the lesions were excise
