BACKGROUND: Mumps outbreaks continue to occur in highly vaccinated populations. Although the diagnosis of mumps is primarily based on clinical symptoms, other viral infections such as parainfluenza can manifest in a similar manner. Therefore, laboratory confirmation of mumps virus infection is important.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to examine mumps cases during the January 2018 to March 2019 period in Ireland as well as to evaluate the association between mumps RNA viral loads, mumps IgG levels, age and gender among patients with laboratory-confirmed mumps virus infection.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) including measles and mumps have been re-emerging in countries with sustained high vaccine coverage. For mumps, waning immunity has been recognized as a major contributor to recent outbreaks. Although unvaccinated individuals account for most cases in recent measles outbreaks, the role of immune waning remains unclear. Accumulating serological and epidemiological evidence suggests that natural immunity induced by infection may be more durable compared to vaccine-induced immunity. As the proportion of population immunity via vaccination gradually increases and

Anogenital warts, caused by the human papillomavirus, are a cause of significant discomfort and psychological concern for the patients. Despite the availability of multiple treatment options, they are a challenge to manage and may be quite refractory. An easy-to-use therapeutic method with low adverse event profile and low-recurrence rate, therefore, remains highly desirable. In this brief paper, an attempt is made to review the intralesional immunotherapy of anogenital warts with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.

During January 1-March 2, 2018, the number of mumps cases among adults reported to the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) doubled compared with the same period in 2017. In response, CDPH created a supplementary questionnaire to collect additional information on populations affected and potential transmission routes. An epidemiologic analysis of routine and supplementary data, including spatiotemporal analysis, was performed to describe mumps cases reported to CDPH during 2018. A fourfold increase in mumps cases was reported during 2018 compared with 2017, with men who have sex with men

BACKGROUND: Intralesional vitamin D3 has recently emerged as a new treatment for cutaneous warts. The use of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine for this purpose is an established modality. However, relevant data on the efficacy of either the MMR vaccine or vitamin D3 as immunotherapy for cutaneous warts in the pediatric population are limited.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and safety of intralesional injections of MMR vaccine to intralesional injections of vitamin D3 in children aged 8-16 years with multiple warts.
METHODS: A total of 74 children were randomly allocated into

A simple magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MDSPE) methodology based on mesoporous Fe3O4@ succinic acid nanospheres and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) has been developed to determine kanamycin (KNM) and neomycin (NEO) contents in Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine products. The monodispersed mesoporous Fe3O4 nanospheres with self-assembled carboxyl terminated shell have been prepared via a simple solvothermal method. These as-synthesized mesoporous Fe3O4 nanospheres showed a high magnetic saturation value (Ms = 46 emu g-1) and large

Despite the established safety and efficacy of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine after almost 50 years of widespread use, the United States is encountering higher levels of measles and mumps disease than has occurred for years. Return of disease threatens the health of those who remain unimmunized by choice as well as those who are immunized appropriately but experience loss of vaccine-induced immunity. The solution to continued threats of illness caused by these untreatable but readily preventable diseases is compliance with recommendations for administration of the measles-mumps-rubella vacc

We report a case of suspected reinfection with the mumps virus in an elderly patient which resulted in temporary closure of an inpatient ward. A 65-year-old man with colorectal cancer was admitted to the digestive surgery ward at our hospital to undergo a stoma closure operation. He was subsequently referred to our department with right swelling in the preauricular region on postoperative day 4. The swelling subsided within a few days, and the patient was discharged. A serum titer test revealed a high level of antibodies to the mumps virus, however. Therefore, staff who had come into close con

OBJECTIVES: To determine population-level immunity to mumps in Australia.
METHODS: We tested randomly selected specimens from people aged 1-49 years using the Enzygnost anti-parotitis IgG enzyme immunoassay from an opportunistically collected serum bank in 2012-2013. Weighted estimates of the proportion seropositive and equivocal for mumps-specific IgG antibody were determined by age group and compared with two previous national serosurveys conducted in 2007-2008 and 1997-1998.
RESULTS: Overall, 82.1% (95% CI 80.6-83.5%) of 2,729 specimens were positive or equivocal for mumps-specific IgG an

Leningrad-Zagreb strain of mumps vaccine virus was grown on two different cell substrates viz. MRC-5 cells and Vero cells besides its original cell substrate i.e. Chicken Embryo Cells. Homogeneous virus pools prepared from each set of experiments were then lyophilized as per standard in-house protocol. Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs) such as the titer of the bulk vaccine and potency and stability of the lyophilized vaccine were then estimated using the CCID50 method to understand the lyophilization losses and thermal losses respectively in the vaccine. Another CQA viz. the genetic homogenei

BACKGROUND: Despite the universal use of the two-dose trivalent measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in the past two decades, outbreaks of these diseases still occur in countries with high vaccine uptake, giving rise to concerns about primary and secondary failure of MMR vaccine components. We aimed to provide seroconversion and waning rate estimates for the measles, mumps, and rubella components of MMR vaccines.
METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis we searched PubMed (including MEDLINE), Web of Science, and Embase for randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, or longitudin

Mumps cases continue to occur, also in countries with a relatively high vaccination rate. The last major outbreaks of mumps in the Netherlands were in 2009-2012 and thereafter, only small clusters and single cases were reported. Molecular epidemiology can provide insights in the circulation of mumps viruses. The aims of the present study were to analyze the molecular epidemiology of mumps viruses in the Netherlands in 2017-2019 and to compare the phylogenetic trees built from sequence data of near complete mumps virus genomes or from the SH gene and non-coding regions (SH+NCRs). To this end, S

Measles outbreaks occur rather frequently in Germany. Patients with chronic inflammatory diseases are often treated with immunosuppressants. A recent study showed that about 7% of such patients are not protected against measles according to the lack of documentation in the vaccination card or the absence of protective antibodies. The Standing Committee on Immunization (STIKO) recommends a first vaccination against measles as a measles-mumps-rubella combined vaccination (MMR) in children aged 11-14 months and a second vaccination at 14-23 months. For adults born after 1970, vaccination against

Incidence of measles is increasing in the US, largely due to transmission among growing unvaccinated communities. To elucidate predictors of parental decision to obtain measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine for unvaccinated children during a measles outbreak, we surveyed families among a vaccine-hesitant Somali community in Minnesota. The survey assessed attitudes and beliefs about MMR vaccine, motivators for vaccinating, and intention to vaccinate future children on time. Among 300 families surveyed, 95% vaccinated their child with MMR due to fear of measles. The predominating parental co

BACKGROUND: Measles (rubeola) is a highly contagious infectious disease with significant morbidity/mortality. Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) is a live-attenuated vaccine used in the United States (US) to prevent measles. This retrospective longitudinal cohort study evaluated childhood MMR vaccination and the risk of a seizure episode and seizure disorder.
METHODS: The Independent Healthcare Research Database (IHRD) composed of records prospectively generated from Florida Medicaid was analyzed using SAS to identify persons continuously enrolled from birth for 120 months. Two cohorts were examined

The exact impact of the decline in childhood vaccination coverage during COVID-19 outbreak has not been estimated for any vaccine-preventable diseases. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of decreased mumps vaccination due to COVID-19 on the disease burden of mumps in Japan. Using a previously validated dynamic transmission model of mumps infection in Japan, the incidence rate of mumps over the next 30 y since July 2020 was estimated. The estimated average incidences were 269.1, 302.0, and 455.4/100,000 person-years in rapid recovery, slow recovery, and permanent decline scenarios. Compar
