Retroperitoneal peripheral nerve sheath tumour of triton type-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Human mannose binding lectin (MBL) and dendritic cell-associated C-type lectin-1 (Dectin-1) are the two prototypical PRRs of innate immunity, whose direct role in recurrent vulvovaginal infections (RVVI) defense has been defined. Previously, MBL insufficiency was proposed as a possible risk factor for the rapid progression of RVVI while, Dectin-1 was found to be playing an active role in the defense. However, the complete genetic bases for the observed low MBL levels are still lacking as our previous studies in harmony with others demonstrated the un-expected genotype-phenotype pat

Pilot study on recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS): a randomized placebo-controlled trial for the comparative therapeutic effects of systemic prednisone and systemic montelukast in subjects unresponsive to topical therapy.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is characterized by recurrent painful oral ulcers whose etiology remains largely unknown. Numerous therapeutic protocols have been tried so far, but effectiveness remains an issue. OBJECTIVE: To test a new drug for patients with recurrent oral aphthae nonresponsive to local corticosteroid therapy, we compared the therapeutic effectiveness and adverse effects of systemic prednisone and systemic montelukast in a placebo-controlled trial. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty patients suffering from minor RAS for > or =6 months were studied and randomly assigned to

A case of ''silk route disease'' in a patient from Congo.

The authors describe a case of Behçet's syndrome or ''silk route disease'' in a patient from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The patient arrived in hospital suffering from an acute episode of febrile erythema nodosum, which was diagnosed as type 2 leprosy reaction. His history reported recurrent oral aphthae and during hospitalization ulcers on the scrotum and pathergy were observed. A diagnosis of Behçet's disease was made. The patient is HLA B51 negative and the scientific literature confirms that testing for the presence of this allele is negative in the 10 cases of Behçet's disease repor

[Relapsing meningoencephalitis as onset of Behçet's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Behçet's disease is a systemic, chronic, relapsing inflammatory disease of unknown etiology characterized by recurrent oral aphthae, genital ulcerations and uveitis. The main pathological mechanism is leukocytoclastic vasculitis. CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a patient with Behçet's disease that presented as a relapsing meningoencephalitis with lymphocytic pleocytosis and high protein levels in cerebrospinal fluid. The MRI revealed a lesion in the brain stem and part of diencephalon. CONCLUSIONS: The central nervous system is involved in up to 5%-20% of patients with Be

Behcet disease in adult Druzes in north Israel: the influence of ethnic origin on disease expression and severity.

BACKGROUND: Behcet's disease (BD) is known to vary in severity and manifestations in different populations. OBJECTIVE: In an attempt to sort out genetic and environmental influences on disease expression, we carried out a study to assess the clinical features of BD in the adult Druze and Arab populations in north Israel, comparing 2 disparate ethnic groups of similar genetic background inhabiting the same geographic region. METHODS: We compared 23 Druze and 30 Arab patients with BD. All patients fulfilled the classification criteria of the International Study Group for BD. RESULTS: Manifest

Monozygotic twins concordant for intestinal Behçet's disease.

Although Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystem disorder of unknown causes, both genetic and environmental factors have been suggested. This is the second reported case of monozygotic twins concordant for Behçet's disease and the first such report of intestinal Behçet's disease. Patient 1 was a 17-year-old man with fever, recurrent oral aphthae, and skin eruptions. He developed hematochezia and was given corticosteroid empirically. One month after he was discharged, he again developed oral ulcerations, fever, and hematochezia. Colonoscopy was performed again, showing aphthous ulcerations in th

Achilles tendonitis in a patient with Behçet's disease.

Abstract A 56-year-old male patient had suffered from recurrent oral aphthae, acne-like rashes on the face, an erythema nodosum-like rash on the left lower leg, and severe heel pain on the left-hand side. Colonoscopy revealed six ulcerative lesions in the terminal ileum. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an inflammatory lesion in the Achilles tendons, with greater inflammation on the left. Achilles tendonitis was considered to be a peripheral enthesopathy in this patient with Behçet's disease complicated by an ileal ulcer.

Beneficial effects of interferon-alpha in a case with Behçet's disease.

At the age of 20 years, a Japanese man with recurrent oral aphthae, genital ulcers, folliculitis, erythema nodosum, episodic arthritis and epididymitis was diagnosed as having Behcet's disease (BD) in 1966. He has had active ocular manifestations of BD since 1990. These symptoms recurred and never abated for a long period of time. A right renal cell carcinoma developed and he underwent right nephrectomy in April 1996. Treatment with interferon-alpha was started from June 1996 as supplemental chemotherapy. No active phase developed during administration of IFN-alpha. We suggest that IFN-alpha m

Behçet's disease associated with complement component 9 (C9) deficiency.

Abstract Behçet's disease is a multisystem inflammatory disorder with unknown etiology. It has been shown that the titer of plasma complement component 9 (C9) is a good indicator of the disease activity. Therefore, the involvement of C9 in the pathogenesis of Behçet's disease has been suggested. We report a case of Behçet's disease associated with complete C9 deficiency (C9D) carrying the homozygous nonsense mutation at Arg-95 of C9 (R95X). The patient presented the typical characteristics of Behçet's disease, such as uveitis, recurrent oral aphthae and genital ulcers, and arthritis, suggestin

[Behcet's disease].

Three women aged 30, 38 and 34 years, originating from Morocco, the Dominican Republic and Turkey, had been suffering since several years from, among other things, oral aphthae, vaginal ulcers and skin lesions without specific abnormalities at examination of blood and biopsies. The diagnosis of Behçet's disease was made and immunomodulating treatment instituted, following which the patients improved. Behçet's disease is a chronic inflammatory multisystemic disorder of unknown aetiology. Originally it was characterised as a triad of recurrent oral aphthae, genital ulcers and inflammatory eye di

A case of pediatric Behçet's disease with intestinal involvement.

We report a 6-year-old girl with recurrent oral aphthae, genital and perianal ulcers, and folliculitis-like erythema followed by intestinal symptoms. No ocular lesions were found. Her ailment was diagnosed as incomplete Behçet's disease with intestinal involvement. According to the literature, pediatric Behçet's disease is characterized by a low incidence of ocular lesions and a high incidence of intestinal involvement, as exhibited in this case. As intestinal lesions in pediatric Behçet's disease are often life-threatening, a barium enema must be given to exclude the possibility of intestinal

Behçet's disease in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia: possible role of interferon-alpha treatment in the occurrence of Behçet's symptoms.

Two patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) who developed characteristic features of Behçet's disease (BD) during alpha-interferon (IFN-alpha) treatment and another patient who had a diagnosis of BD preceding CML are presented. In the first two patients, features of BD appeared 6 months after the initiation of IFN-alpha treatment: they included recurrent oral aphthae, genital ulceration, arthritis, folliculitis, and a positive skin pathergy test. The third patient, however, had a diagnosis of Behçet's disease 4 years before diagnosis of Philadelphia-positive CML. We prospectively exam
