Benefits of dental implants installed during ablative tumour surgery in oral cancer patients: a prospective 5-year clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study assessed treatment outcome and patient satisfaction of oral cancer patients with a mandibular overdenture on implants up to 5 years after treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At baseline, 50 consecutive edentulous oral cancer patients, in whom prosthetic problems were expected after oncological treatment, were evaluated by standardized questionnaires and clinical assessments. All implants were installed during ablative tumour surgery in native bone in the interforaminal area. About two-thirds of the patients (n=31) had radiotherapy post-surgery (dose >40 Gy in t

Intraglossal impaction of ingested fish bones: a case series.

Although foreign body ingestion and impaction in the pharynx or hypopharynx are quite commonly encountered at our institution, foreign body impaction in tongue tissue is rare. Six cases of foreign bodies embedded in the tongue were identified in a retrospective review spanning the years 1998 to 2007. All the foreign bodies were fish bones. Four of these patients required only tongue exploration to remove the bone; one required a partial glossectomy because of difficulties locating the bone; and one required incision and drainage of an intraglossal abscess that had developed, as well as a trach

Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) in an infant with Werdnig-Hoffmann disease. Case report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Werdnig-Hoffmann disease is the most common cause of hypotonia in infants and its prognosis is worse if it is present shortly after delivery. Symmetrical muscular weakness, areflexia, and fasciculations of the tongue are characteristic. The majority of the infants die before two years of age as a consequence of respiratory failure. The present report presents a case in which total intravenous anesthesia was used. CASE REPORT: This is a 1 year old white female weighing 10 kg, physical status ASA III, with Werdnig-Hoffmann disease diagnosed at two months of age. The p

Foot-and-mouth disease viral loads in pigs in the early, acute stage of disease.

The progress and pathogenesis of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) was studied in infected pigs by observing the development of clinical signs in two separate experiments. Viral loads were determined by real-time quantitative RT-PCR in the liver, spleen, cervical lymph node, mandibular lymph node, retropharyngeal lymph node, soft palate, pharynx, tonsil, tongue and skin (coronary band area). Tissue samples were collected from both inoculated and contact-infected pigs at several time points during infection, and blood samples were collected to assess viraemia and its relationship to tissue vi

Modelling foot-and-mouth disease virus dynamics in oral epithelium to help identify the determinants of lysis.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) causes an economically important disease of cloven-hoofed livestock; of interest here is the difference in lytic behaviour that is observed in bovine epithelium. On the skin around the feet and tongue, the virus rapidly replicates, killing cells, and resulting in growing lesions, before eventually being cleared by the immune response. In contrast, there is usually minimal lysis in the soft palate, but virus may persist in tissue long after the animal has recovered from the disease. Persistence of virus has important implications for disease control, while id

A case study associated with oropharyngeal cancer.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common oral malignancy, commonly located on the anterior floor of the mouth, lateral borders of the tongue, tonsillar pillars and lateral soft palate. A 59 year old male presented to a Midwestern university dental hygiene clinic following referral for pre-radiation and chemotherapy oral prophylaxis and comprehensive examination. He reported he found a firm lump in his neck and brought it to the attention of his general physician. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of SCC of the left tonsil. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy were performed. This case stud

[Traumatic ulceration of the tongue in an infant].

A 6-month-old baby was referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon due to an ulcer that had not healed. The diagnosis was Riga-Fede. The disease is also known as traumatic oral granuloma and is characterized by traumatic ulcerations on the tongue or lower lip. The lesions are caused by repeated trauma of the mucous membrane by emerging teeth in infants, especially the lower incisors. Early recognition of the disease is important because it has been associated with neurological abnormalities. A delayed or incorrect diagnosis or inadequate therapy can result in permanent deformity of the tongu

Exceptional oral manifestations of amyloid light chain protein (AL) systemic amyloidosis.

Oral amyloidosis is usually presented in the tongue and is often associated with multiple myeloma. We present three patients with unusual oral manifestations of primary amyloidosis, which to the best of our knowledge have not been previously published. In two cases the oral manifestation was overt at the time of diagnosis and all cases ended in patient mortality. Since these oral manifestations can contribute to the diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis, clinicians should be made aware of them. Future research should assess the significance of oral manifestation as a prognostic indicator.

Immunolocalization of heat shock proteins 27 and 47 during repair of induced oral ulcers.

Heat shock proteins (Hsps) 27 and 47 are involved in the control of apoptosis, cell migration, and collagen synthesis. There is some understanding of the immunolocalization of these proteins during the repair process in skin and gastrointestinal mucosa, but their expressions in normal and injured oral mucosa are unknown. The aim of this study was to analyze the immunolocalization and intensity of these proteins in oral ulcers induced in rats and to compare these expression levels with those reported in skin and gastric mucosa. Ulcers were induced on the ventral surface of the tongues of rats.

Treatment, classification, and review of Tapia syndrome.

Tapia syndrome was first described by Antonio Garcia Tapia in 1904. Then, he believed that the existing lesion, resulting in some neurologic symptoms, was outside the central nervous system. Nowadays, this syndrome is characterized by the unilateral paralysis of the tongue and the vocal cord. Possible cause of this disorder is injury to the 10th and 12th cranial nerves without involvement of the pharyngeal branches of the 10th nerve. We present a patient with Tapia syndrome together with its treatment and new classification.

[Dropped head sign and tongue atrophy in systemic sclerosis-associated myopathy: a case report].

We report a 70-year-old man with a 5-year history of Raynaud's phenomenon and slow progression of weight loss, easy fatigability, muscle weakness, skin sclerosis, and dropped head sign. The patient was assumed to have motor neuron disease by his attending physician, and was referred to our hospital. Physical examination showed skin sclerosis on the fingers, hands, forearms, face, and neck. Neurological examination showed advanced systemic muscle atrophy and weakness, especially in the neck, tongue, and proximal limb muscles. Fasciculations were not observed in these involved muscles. Feline orofacial pain syndrome (FOPS): a retrospective study of 113 cases.

Feline orofacial pain syndrome (FOPS) is a pain disorder of cats with behavioural signs of oral discomfort and tongue mutilation. This report describes the findings from a case series of 113 cats including 100 Burmese. FOPS is suspected to be a neuropathic pain disorder and the predominance within the Burmese cat breed suggests an inherited disorder, possibly involving central and/or ganglion processing of sensory trigeminal information. The disease is characterised by an episodic, typically unilateral, discomfort with pain-free intervals. The discomfort is triggered, in many cases, by mouth m

Impaired somatosensation in tongue mucosa of smokers.

Smoking has been indicated as a risk factor for oral diseases and can lead to altered sense of taste. So far, the effects of sensory changes on the tongue are not investigated. In this study, quantitative sensory testing was used to evaluate somatosensory function in the lingual region. Eighty healthy volunteers were investigated (20 smokers, 20 non-smokers). Subjects were bilaterally tested in innervation areas of lingual nerves. Thresholds of cold and warm detection, cold and heat pain, and mechanical detection were determined. As control for systemic, extraoral effects of smoking, tests wer

Lingual metastasis as an initial presentation of renal cell carcinoma.

Distant metastasis of malignant neoplasm to the oral soft tissue is extremely rare. We report a case of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastasizing to the tongue. A 47-year-old man visited our hospital with chief complaint of a lump on the middle third of the dorsum of his tongue and the lesion fell off from the tongue. Although histopathological diagnosis of the mass was granuloma teleangiectaticum, similar nodule reappeared in the same area 2 weeks later. The second lesion was composed of granuloma teleangiectaticum and aggregation of neoplastic clear cells in ductal arrangement. The clear cell
