Fungal infection in the oral cavity is not uncommon. The site involved is usually species related. Cryptococcus rarely infects the oral cavity. We report an elderly patient who presented with a central lesion on the dorsum of the tongue. Biopsy revealed a fungal infection. Special stains confirmed cryptococcus. Being a rare location for cryptococcal infection, clinical suspicion should be correlated with histopathological examination. Once confirmed, the patient should be treated with an antifungal medication.

Oral lichen planus is a cell-mediated immune condition and is infrequently encountered in children, with a prevalence of about 0.03 percent in childhood. Reports of oral lichen planus affecting children are scarce in the literature. The purpose of this article is to present a rare case of oral lichen planus affecting a seven-year-old child without concomitant cutaneous lesions. Intraoral lesions and associated mild discomfort treated with topical corticosteroid therapy and a plaque control regime resulted in a favorable result.

Numerous reports have shown that the incidence for oropharyngeal cancer is increasing and that human papillomavirus (HPV) is a risk factor. We report the case of a man presenting with a large, airway obstructing, minor salivary gland tumour arising from the right tonsillar base. Clinically, the tumour behaved in a malignant way. A firm diagnosis of malignancy could not be made histologically. The differential diagnosis included polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma, basal cell adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma. We report a case of a leiomyomatous hamartoma located in the midline of the base of the tongue. The two-year-old girl had an asymptomatic pedunculated tubular tumour measuring 1.6 x 1.3 x 1.1 cms. The lesion was surgically excised, and histopathological examination disclosed a non-neoplastic mass composed of irregular arranged bundles of smooth muscle cells embedded in a fibrovascular stroma. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry with positivity for smooth muscle actin and desmin. Until now, only 19 cases have been reported in English-language literature.

Tumor metastasis is the dominant cause of death in cancer patients, including patients with oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC). Previously, we reported that reduced miR-138 level is correlated with enhanced metastatic potential in TSCC cells. BACKGROUND: Aneurysms of the external carotid artery and its branches are rare.
METHODS: We present an extremely rare case of pseudoaneurysm of the lingual artery secondary to concurrent intra-arterial chemotherapy via the superficial temporal artery for advanced tongue cancer.
RESULTS: The patient developed sudden and significant oral bleeding from the left tongue base 10 weeks after the completion of treatment. Angiography provided a diagnosis of pseudoaneurysm of the lingual artery, and subsequent endovascular intervention was an effective means of controlling bleeding.
