Diffusion Relaxation-Correlated Spectroscopic MR Imaging for In Vivo Tumor Heterogeneity and Lymph Node Metastasis Prediction in Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: In oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC), cervical lymph node metastasis (CLNM) reduces predicted survival by 50%. However, MRI sensitivity for occult nodal disease is only 35.7%, reflecting limited microstructural specificity. PURPOSE: To investigate whether diffusion-relaxation correlated spectroscopic imaging (DR-CSI) metrics with peritumoral extensions contribute toward the prediction of CLNM in OTSCC. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: 99 patients (33 female and 66 male) with pathologically confirmed OTSCC. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3T; a spin-echo echo-planar DR-CS

A qualitative study to explore oral health related social practices in children from immigrant Indian families in Australia using social practice theory.

Immigrants in high-income countries experience disproportionately high rates of oral diseases compared to the general population. Existing research largely focuses on biomedical models, individual behaviours or cultural factors providing limited insights into how everyday practices shape oral health outcomes. This study explored how oral health social practices were performed, sustained and/or modified within Indian immigrant families with young children in Australia. A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 17 participants (12 mothers, 5 service providers), usin

AT-101 inhibits the proliferation and invasion of tongue squamous carcinoma cells by targeting the miR-21-5p/FDX1 axis.

Tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is an aggressive oral malignancy with an increasing incidence worldwide, however, the molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying its progression still unclear. Existing studies demonstrate that microRNAs (miRNAs) play a critical role in TSCC progression. In particular, the regulatory relationship between the oncogenic miR-21-5p and the tumor suppressor gene FDX1, as well as its targeted effect on the natural compound AT-101, remains a clear research gap. In this study, CTD, dbMEMC, and TCGA databases were used to screen AT-101-related genes and the miR-21-

Cutaneous and mucosal ulceration associated with the use of leflunomide in three dogs.

Oral and cutaneous ulceration and drug-induced liver injury (DILI) are uncommon adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to leflunomide use in humans. Reports of leflunomide hepatotoxicity in dogs exist but ulceration has not been described in animals. This case series includes a 1.5-year-old male neutered Bernese Mountain Dog, a 7-year-old female spayed Australian Shepherd, and a 1-year-old male neutered mixed-breed dog that were administered leflunomide for immune-mediated conditions. All developed deep ulcerated lesions affecting either the tongue, skin, or both. One dog had concurrent severe DILI. Th

Elucidating the effects of ginger processing on Magnolia bark: A multi-platform strategy linking chemical composition to taste and bioactivity.

Magnolia officinalis (Houpo, HP) is a prominent Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). Despite its traditional processing with ginger to reduce irritation, enhance efficacy, and improve taste, the underlying mechanisms connecting this chemical transformation to its sensory and gastrointestinal effects are not fully understood. Existing studies lack systematic analysis of shared targets across gastrointestinal diseases and the identification of quality markers (Q-markers), limiting scientific justification for its processing and clinical use. This study therefore applied an integrated UPLC-Q-TOF/MS

A Rare Presentation of Congenital Melanocytic Nevus on the Tongue and Lower Lip Mucosa.

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are rare lesions with significant diagnostic challenges, particularly when they occur in atypical locations such as oral mucosa. This study is the first in India to document a case of CMN involving both the tongue and lower lip mucosa, highlighting the need to understand these uncommon manifestations for accurate diagnosis and effective management, given their potential risk of malignant transformation. A 36-year-old male with asymptomatic pigmented lesions on the dorsal tongue and lower lip mucosa underwent detailed clinical and dermoscopic evaluation using a

Guided tongue reconstruction: Feasibility analysis of additively manufactured surgical toolkit on a silicone tongue model.

OBJECTIVE: Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) for tongue reconstruction promises patient-specific optimizations, but its utility is limited by the difficulty of translating a digital plan to a deformable organ. This study evaluated the feasibility and anatomical accuracy of a patient-specific, additively manufactured surgical toolkit through benchtop experiments on soft-tissue phantoms. METHOD: Four distinct hemiglossectomy reconstruction cases were planned using VSP and executed on patient-specific silicone tongue phantoms. The guided workflow, performed by an independent surgeon, incorporated:

Targeting hypoxia: the role of ethanolic extract of Coptis chinensis Franch. in modulating HIF-1α/IL-17 axis in oropharyngeal candidiasis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC), primarily induced by Candida albicans, poses a significant threat to oral health due to the hypoxic microenvironment established by C. albicans biofilms. Coptis chinensis Franch., a traditional Chinese medicine first documented in Shennong's Classic of the materia medica, has been traditionally employed in the treatment of infectious diseases, including OPC. The ethanolic extract of C. chinensis Franch. (EECF), which is a compound obtained through ethanol extraction from the herb, demonstrates significant therapeutic potential ag

5-Aminolevulinic Acid-Mediated Photodynamic Therapy Induces Ferroptosis in Oral Leukoplakia and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the treatment modalities for oral leukoplakia (OLK) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, the role of ferroptosis in ALA-PDT for OLK and OSCC remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether ALA-PDT can induce ferroptosis in OLK and OSCC. We detected relative cellular dehydrogenase activity (CCK-8 assay), long-term proliferative viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, glutathione levels, and mitochondrial morphology after ALA-PDT. The expression of ferroptosis-related proteins

Successful Medical Management of Severe Macroglossia Associated With Lingual Abscess in a Dog.

A 9 yr old castrated male French bulldog, weighing 13.9 kg, presented with acute tongue swelling. Physical examination revealed marked macroglossia. Computed tomography (CT) showed a cavitary lesion extending from the lingual root to the body with rim enhancement. These CT findings were highly suggestive of a lingual abscess, and the lesion was aspirated. Cytological examination revealed degenerate neutrophils and intracellular bacteria, confirming a lingual abscess. Following aspiration, fluid therapy, systemic antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory dose of prednisolone were administered. The mac

From convolutional neural networks to large foundation models: A systematic review of deep learning for intelligent tongue diagnosis.

As a core component of inspection in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the tongue contains rich physiological and pathological information. Advances in deep learning technology have significantly enhanced the accuracy and interpretability of intelligent tongue diagnosis. This paper presents a systematic review of intelligent tongue diagnosis based on deep learning. First, in terms of methodology, we elaborate on four mainstream paradigms of intelligent tongue diagnosis, examining the algorithmic models, technical principles, and applicable scenarios within each paradigm. Second, regarding ta

Sulfur metabolism and immune-microbial networks across oral niches in periodontal disease.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) integrate microbial metabolism with local inflammation in periodontal disease. We profiled five oral niches (saliva, tongue, subgingival, supragingival, and interdental plaque) across clinical health, gingivitis, and periodontitis by combining direct VSC measurements (subgingival and oral headspace H2S/CH3SH), functional cysteine/methionine degradation assays, 16S rRNA profiling, gingival crevicular fluid cytokines, and targeted qPCR. Subgingival H2S concentrations were significantly elevated in periodontitis after adjusting for age, sex, plaque index, and subg

The Prognostic Significance of Elective Level 4 Neck Dissection in Oral Tongue Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Elective neck dissection (END) for oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) typically involves level 4 due to potential metastases that may bypass levels 1-2. Our study challenges this notion and investigates the necessity of level 4 inclusion in END for OTSCC. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study performed in a tertiary-care university affiliated medical center and included all OTSCC patients treated with END from 2000 to 2020, with a minimum 2-year follow-up. The study compared patients with END levels 1-3 to those with levels 1-4 regarding regional recurrence, disease-spe

Bronchogenic Cyst of the Tongue: Congenital Tongue Masses.

Bronchogenic cysts, a subgroup of foregut duplication cysts, are rare congenital malformations of ventral foregut development. These cysts can be found ectopically along the entire developmental pathway of the foregut. Less than 1% of bronchogenic cysts are found in the oral cavity, with fewer than 10 cases previously reported in the literature. These lesions typically present asymptomatically shortly after birth but have the potential to cause respiratory and/or feeding difficulties. Treatment is surgical excision, and histopathology is ultimately required to reach a definitive diagnosis and

Lingual metastasis from primary pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma: A rare case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a malignancy that most frequently originates in the salivary glands of the head and neck, though it may also rarely occur in other sites such as the trachea or breast. It is characterized by its slow-growing nature in the early stages, along with distinctive features of perineural invasion and a tendency for late metastasis, particularly to the lungs. Recurrence or metastasis can occur even years after the initial treatment. Currently, no standardized clinical protocol exists for long-term follow-up. The disease can recur or metastasize even years after initi
