Gastrointestinal manifestations and enzyme replacement therapy in late-onset Pompe disease: insights from a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) is an autosomal-recessive disorder caused by acid α-glucosidase (GAA) deficiency, typically presenting after the first year of life and resulting in systemic glycogen accumulation. Beyond motor and respiratory manifestations, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms have been increasingly reported. Although enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) improves skeletal and respiratory function, its impact on GI symptoms remains unclear. METHODS: There were 124 LOPD patients recruited to complete the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), together with questionnaire

An Oral Cavity Mass in a 5-Year-Old Girl.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic malformations are rare congenital vascular anomalies that most commonly affect the head and neck regions. Cervicofacial lesions extending into the oral cavity or upper airway can result in dysphagia, bleeding, malnutrition, and airway obstruction. Emergency assessment is particularly challenging because significant anatomic distortion can exist even when physiologic parameters remain stable, necessitating thorough airway evaluation and early anticipation of potential clinical deterioration. CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old girl who had recently emigrated from Peru presented wit

Rating Scales for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: The Importance of a Comprehensive Assessment.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by cyclical apnea states during sleep, caused by alterations in the dilatory muscles of the pharynx and tongue. It is an underestimated and underappreciated disorder, which can affect a person's health and quality of life, as well as trigger the onset of several other systemic diseases. Patients diagnosed with OSAS present with clinical pictures that are not always easy to distinguish and may be associated with multiple comorbidities. This heterogeneity makes early diagnosis difficult and complicates not only the resolution of sleep apne

Changing patterns in tongue, oral cavity, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas in New Zealand: Incidence, trends and survival from 2006 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, and hypopharynx have traditionally been associated with common risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use. With changes in smoking and drinking patterns, the incidence of these cancers is expected to change. Although the incidence of oral cavity cancer has been reported recently, there is limited evidence available for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers in New Zealand (NZ). Furthermore, while growing evidence suggests increasing incidence of tongue cancer among females and young individuals, this trend has not been investigated in NZ. This st

Awareness and intended behavioral responses to oral potentially malignant disorders: an image-based assessment among dental clinic attendees in Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) are a group of oral diseases that have the potential for malignant transformation. A significant proportion of oral squamous cell carcinomas arise from OPMDs. Thus, their early detection contributes to the prevention of oral cancer. An investigation of the public’s awareness and intended behavioral responses to OPMDs helps identify health-seeking patterns, underscoring risk factors that are associated with poor awareness of OPMDs management. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate overall awareness of OPMDs among the public, and to un

Integrated analysis identifies CCNA2 as a candidate diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) is an aggressive malignancy with poor prognosis, necessitating reliable biomarkers. METHODOLOGY: Genes with significantly higher expression in OTSCC tumor tissues compared to normal tongue tissues were identified via integrated transcriptomic analysis of seven GEO datasets. To assess their diagnostic and prognostic potential, these genes were further characterized using multi-omic and clinical data from the TCGA-OTSCC and CPTAC-OTSCC cohorts. RESULTS: A total of 1,117 genes were found to be upregulated in OTSCC tissues, among which only

NDUFA4L2 regulates the progression and chemotherapy sensitivity of HNSCC by inhibiting PANoptosis.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) represents a leading global malignancy among head and neck cancers. While chemotherapy serves as a standard adjuvant treatment, cisplatin resistance frequently compromises therapeutic outcomes. PANoptosis is an integrated inflammatory cell death pathway governed by PANoptosome complexes. It critically influences chemotherapy response, though its regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely characterized. NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) 1 alpha subcomplex subunit 4-like 2 (NDUFA4L2), a subunit of respiratory chain complex I, has been identified as a cr

Diagnostic challenge of high vitamin B12 levels: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency is a well-documented clinical condition, with several causes and important consequences. High serum B12 level (hypercobalaminemia) is less common and not easily explained, being caused by different conditions, such as blood disorders, autoimmune diseases, and solid tumors. Moreover, cases of increased B12 levels due to the presence of polymers formed by vitamin B12 and other proteins have been described to show falsely elevated serum levels when measured by conventional methods. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old white Italian man presented to an i

Acceptability of tongue swabs for tuberculosis screening in migrant settings in northern Italy: A qualitative study.

Human migrations, driven by economic hardship, conflict, and climate change, complicate the global fight against tuberculosis (TB). New strategies are needed to improve the screening of migrants for active TB disease. Current sputum-based testing methods are logistically challenging in many settings. Alternative sampling with tongue swabs is designed to be easier than sputum collection and exhibits acceptable accuracy. This study characterized the acceptability of supervised self-swabbing (SSS) for TB screening in migrant settings in Northern Italy.Migrants arriving through the Central Mediter

Association between oral microbiota and inflammatory bowel disease: A 2-sample Mendelian randomization study in East Asian populations.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is increasingly prevalent in East Asia. Its pathogenesis is linked to microbiota dysbiosis via the oral-gut axis, but population-specific causal evidence remains scarce. This study aimed to clarify the causal associations between oral microbiota and UC/CD in East Asian populations using Mendelian randomization (MR), providing evidence for IBD etiology and precise prevention/treatment. A 2-sample MR approach was adopted, using genome-wide association study data of East Asian populations. Single nucleot

Natural panax notoginseng-derived nanovesicles trigger multiple cell death mechanisms and reprogram chemokine signaling to impede oral squamous cell carcinoma progression.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains one of the most aggressive malignancies of the oral epithelium, with limited therapeutic options effectively targeting both tumor growth and metastasis. Plant-derived nanovesicles have emerged as natural, biocompatible nanomedicines with potential applications in cancer therapy. Here, we systematically screened nanovesicles from ten medicinal plants and identified Panax notoginseng-derived nanovesicles (PnNVs) as the most potent inhibitors of OSCC. PnNVs exhibited favorable safety profiles and intrinsic tumor-homing ability, selectively accumulating

Enhancement of chicken soup quality induced by low-voltage electrostatic field assisted stewing: a novel strategy for salt reduction.

High salt intake is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, while conventional salt-reduction methods in soup preparation often lead to flavor deterioration. To address this issue, this study systematically investigated the comprehensive effects of low-voltage electrostatic field (LVEF)-assisted stewing on salt reduction, saltiness enhancement, and overall quality improvement in chicken soup. Electronic tongue analysis revealed that the saltiness response of LVEF-treated chicken soup (6H-EF group) increased by 5.3% compared to the control. Quantitative descr
