Beyond sentinel node biopsy: preliminary results of indocyanine green-guided neck dissection in cN0 tongue cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Neck management in oral cancer is crucial, as regional involvement strongly affects survival. Elective dissection leaves out 10% of recurrences, mainly at levels IV-V or contralateral. Sentinel node biopsy is a different strategy to detect unexpected lymphatic drainage. Our aim is to develop a tumour-specific lymphatic mapping approach for locally-advanced cN0 tongue cancers by combining scintigraphy biopsy with indocyanine green (ICG) guidance. METHODS: In this multicentre prospective pilot study lymphatic drainage was evaluated preoperatively using scintigraphy and intraoperative

Evaluation of Dysphagia in Myositis and Muscular Dystrophy Using Real-Time MRI and Quantitative Muscle Ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Swallowing dysfunction-dysphagia-is a frequent and debilitating symptom in neuromuscular disorders, leading to malnutrition, cachexia, aspiration pneumonia, and death. Identification of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms is important for diagnosis and treatment. As standard assessments have limitations, novel imaging techniques are needed. We here studied the utility of real-time MRI and quantitative muscle ultrasound for characterizing dysphagia in two different neuromuscular disorders. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 18 patients with inclusion body myos

Stroma AReactive invasion Front Areas (SARIFA) in early-stage oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Stroma AReactive Invasion Front Areas (SARIFA) has recently been introduced as a prognostic indicator. The prognostic value of SARIFA has not been studied in early-stage oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 287 cases of early-stage OTSCC were included in this multicenter study. SARIFA was defined as direct contact between tumor cells and the adipose tissue, and was assessed in hematoxylin and eosin (HE)-stained sections. RESULTS: In early-stage OTSCC, SARIFA-positive tumors were associated with worse disease-specific survival with a hazard

Distribution of adverse pathological features and prognosis across tongue, buccal, gum, and other oral cancer subsites: A nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: Staging of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) does not account for anatomical subsites. However, these subsites demonstrate considerable pathological heterogeneity and survival differences. Most prior studies have not systematically examined the influence of distinct pathological factors across subsites. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the clinical and pathological characteristics, as well as survival outcomes of OSCC across major oral subsites, using a nationwide cancer registry. METHODS: A total of 17,118 patients with surgically treated OSCC diagnosed between 2018 and

Lingual Raynaud's Phenomenon: A Case Series and Literature Review.

Background: Raynaud's phenomenon of the tongue is a rare manifestation that may be associated with systemic diseases. The clinical manifestations, etiologies and management of this condition are poorly described. Methods: We report 10 cases of lingual Raynaud's phenomenon (LRP) and 26 cases from a structured literature review. Results: In 38.8% of cases, the LRP occurred in the context of a previously diagnosed systemic sclerosis; 16.6% followed radiotherapy for head and neck cancer; and 27.8% of patients presented with an idiopathic-like form. The manifestations classically included a syncopa

A Novel Strategy for Rapid Quantification of Multiple Quality Indicators and Grade Discrimination of Atractylodis macrocephalae Rhizoma Based on Electronic Nose, Electronic Tongue and Machine-Learning Algorithms.

Atractylodes macrocephala Rhizoma (AMR) is a frequently used medicinal herb for treating gastrointestinal disorders, with its quality influenced by factors such as origin and cultivation duration. Traditional quality control methods for AMR are time-consuming and invasive, making the development of faster and more efficient alternatives urgently needed. This study aims to utilize electronic nose (E-nose) and electronic tongue (E-tongue) to achieve the acquisition of odor-taste two-dimensional information of AMR. Integrating this approach with machine learning (ML) enables intelligent transform

Emerging Role of Taste Receptors, Entero-Endocrine Cells in Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major global healthcare challenge and burden on the quality of life in affected individuals. While lifestyle management is the mainstay treatment for T2D, the advent of gut-incretin-based therapies with powerful effects on metabolic health, appetite and weight regulation has focussed attention on the role of the gut in the risk, progression and management of T2D. Beyond the tongue, intestinal sweet taste receptors (STRs) are increasingly being identified and functionally characterised. Growing evidence now supports a role for nutrient-activated (e.g., sugars) intesti

Impairment of lip and tongue strength in symptomatic SMA1 patients: Results from a 4-center prospective study using the IOPI.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic neuromuscular disease characterized by muscular atrophy and respiratory and bulbar dysfunction, especially in the most severe phenotypes (SMA type 0 and 1). Swallowing function remains understudied because assessment tools are often unavailable or poorly tolerated by young children. The Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), that measures orofacial strength via a small air-filled bulb has recently been evaluated in SMA type 2 and 3 patients. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate muscle strength of several muscles used

[Research Progress on Microbiome-Driven Mechanisms and Intervention Strategies for Oral Malodor].

Oral malodor, a common oral symptom, is primarily caused by the metabolic activities of oral microorganisms. The characteristic odors mainly originate from volatile sulfur compounds produced and released by oral bacteria (such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis) through specific enzymatic systems that break down sulfur-containing amino acids in saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, and food debris. Research indicates that various factors, including periodontitis, fungal infections, smoking, and obesity, can worsen oral malodor by altering the oral microenvironment. For preven

Parents' Perspectives on Access to Pediatric Rare Disease Cross-Border Clinical Trials in Europe: Experiences of Language Inclusion and Preferences.

INTRODUCTION: Access to cross-border clinical trials may represent the sole therapeutic option for children living with rare diseases for which no approved medicines exist. Many children are excluded from participation in trials due to language restrictions. There are insufficient comprehensive analyses of the experiences and preferences of parents across Europe concerning participation and exclusion of their child in international clinical trials, particularly regarding language support during enrollment in cross-border clinical research studies. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was desig

Tiger Tongue-Inspired Bionic Microneedle Patch With Dual Mechanical-Pharmacological Functions for Enhanced Wound Healing.

Effective skin wound healing requires reliable fixation and infection prevention. Inspired by the inclined papillary structure of the tiger's tongue, we developed a biomimetic microneedle patch that integrates mechanical stability with antibacterial function. The patch was fabricated via thermal pressing of polylactic acid (PLA) microneedles followed by localized drug loading at the microneedle tips. Its design includes a clamping structure, a dual-array of inclined drug-releasing PLA microneedles, a nonwoven fabric base, and a flexible adhesive layer. In vitro tests demonstrated a penetration

Lingual haemangiosarcoma in a French Bulldog: atypical clinical presentation.

A one-year-old male entire French Bulldog presented with progressive submandibular and ventral cervical swelling. Initial treatment for a suspected lingual abscess secondary to stick chewing yielded only transient improvement. Despite both conservative therapy and surgical intervention, the dog's condition deteriorated, prompting advanced imaging. Bilateral lingual masses and pulmonary abnormalities were identified. Post-mortem examination confirmed a diagnosis of lingual haemangiosarcoma (LHSA) with multifocal metastasis and severe pulmonary haemorrhage. This is the first reported case of LHS

Legumain-Mediated Activation of PAR2 Contributes to Mechanical Hypersensitivity in a Rat Model of Tongue Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Legumain, also known as asparaginyl endopeptidase or δ-secretase, is a cysteine protease that plays a significant role in various biological and pathological processes. This study investigated the role of the legumain-protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) signaling pathway in mechanical hypersensitivity in a rat model of tongue cancer. METHODS: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells were injected subcutaneously into the tongue. Mechanical head withdrawal reflex threshold (MHWT) was recorded after SCC inoculation or activated-legumain administration. The expression of legumain in the ca

PTPR family deletions are associated with greater genomic structural instability in young adult tongue cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) has traditionally affected older males with tobacco and alcohol exposure. Multiple population-based studies demonstrate a rising trend in OTSCC among younger individuals. Several studies indicate that young adults may experience higher rates of local recurrence and disease relapse. We sought to determine whether variations in somatic structural variants (SVs) and copy number variants (CNVs) could explain differences in clinical outcomes between young and old OTSCC patients. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary acad

FoxP3+ Cells and PNAd+ Tumour-Associated High Endothelial Venules: Synergistic Prognostic Markers in Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) features significant immune cell infiltration. In head and neck SCC, peripheral node addressin (PNAd) + tumour-associated high endothelial venules (TA-HEVs) and CD163+ tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) are associated with favourable and unfavourable prognoses, respectively, whereas the prognostic value of FoxP3+ cells is controversial. This national, multi-centre retrospective study evaluates the prognostic roles of these biomarkers individually and in combination in a homogeneous cohort of 126 treatment-naïve OTSCC patients diagnosed in
