The Natural Evolution of Macroglossia Among Beckwith-Wiedemann Patients: A 30-Year Institutional Review.

BACKGROUND: Macroglossia is a hallmark of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). Tongue reduction surgery is classically performed to address such issues, but its necessity in patients without airway or feeding compromise remains debated. This study evaluates long-term outcomes of conservative management. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with BWS seen from 1993 to 2023 was performed. Data collected included demographics, comorbidities, occlusion, cephalometrics, and speech outcomes. Dental and dento-skeletal measures were compared with age- and sex-matched standards. RESULTS: Of 59 pa

Multifocal Perineural Invasion Predicts Poor Disease-Free Survival in Early-Stage Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma Exhibiting WPOI-4.

OBJECTIVES: Perineural invasion (PNI) is a pathological hallmark associated with tumor spread. Evidence suggested that PNI location (extratumoural vs. intratumoural) held prognostic significance in early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), whereas the prognostic impact of PNI extent (unifocal versus multifocal) remained to be elucidated. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic relevance of PNI extent in early-stage tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) characterized by worst pattern of invasion 4 (WPOI-4). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 130 patients with pT1/T2

Deep learning radiomics based on multimodal MRI for preoperative prediction of N stage in tongue squamous cell carcinoma: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative discrimination between early (N0/N1) and advanced (N2/N3) nodal stages is critical for treatment planning in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) due to its well-established impact on prognosis. Nevertheless, conventional imaging techniques show limited accuracy in staging precision. To address this gap, we developed and validated a Deep Learning Radiomics (DLR) model utilizing multimodal MRI, with the goal of enhancing preoperative staging reliability and supporting clinical decision-making in oral oncology. METHODS: A total of 579 patients with TSCC from two indepen

[Comparative analysis of microbial communities in different oral ecological niches of preschool children].

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the structural differences, dominant bacterial genera, and potential functions of microbial communities in different oral ecological niches (dorsal tongue, tooth surface, and buccal mucosa) of preschool children to clarify the influence of local microenvironments on microbial colonization and provide a theoretical basis for the microbiota-targeted regulation of pediatric oral diseases. METHODS: A total of 105 plaque samples were collected from the dorsal tongue, tooth surface, and buccal mucosa of 35 healthy preschool children (aged 4-6 years). High-

Successful management of near-infrared photoimmunotherapy-induced skin injury using pedicled flap transfer.

Near-infrared photoimmunotherapy (NIR-PIT) is a recently developed cancer treatment which employs the combination of an antibody-photoabsorbor conjugate and NIR light. Currently, NIR-PIT is approved only in Japan for the treatment of unresectable, locally recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, using the anti-epidermal growth factor receptor antibody cetuximab and the photoabsorber IR700. However, there is no consensus on the optimal timing and management of NIR-PIT-induced skin injuries from both functional and oncological perspectives. Here, we report the case of a 71-year-old male

Hypoalbuminemia and reduced sputum microbiome diversity associated with antibiotic treatment failure in nursing and healthcare-associated pneumonia.

Nursing and healthcare-associated pneumonia (NHCAP) pose significant challenges in older populations, yet factors predicting antibiotic treatment failure remain elusive. This exploratory secondary analysis of a multicenter phase IV trial aimed to identify the clinical and microbiome predictors of treatment failure in patients with NHCAP treated with lascufloxacin. Among the 56 evaluable patients (median age 86 years; cured n = 44, not cured n = 12), paired sputum and tongue samples were analyzed using 16S ribosomal RNA gene clone library sequencing. Alpha diversity was assessed using the Shann

Broadening the phenotypic and molecular spectrum of PRS deficiency in females.

Phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase (PRS) deficiency is a rare X-linked disorder caused by variants in the PRPS1 gene. While males typically exhibit severe phenotypes, heterozygous females may or may not be affected, most likely explained by skewed X chromosome inactivation and its impact on enzyme activity. In this study, we describe and study both unique and previously described variants in PRPS1 in female patients. We provide detailed molecular and phenotypic information for two pediatric patients who possess unique variants in PRPS1, one of whom presents with bilateral tongue fasciculat

To Vape or Not to Vape: Oral Health in the Age of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems and Electronic Non-Nicotine Delivery Systems.

100 million adults and 15 million adolescents currently use e-cigarettes, a type of Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) or Electronic Non-Nicotine Delivery System (ENNDS). While they were introduced as smoking cessation aids, they are currently marketed as consumer products rather than prescription-based cessation tools. According to the WHO, as of 2025, 88 countries do not have minimum age restrictions, and 74 countries have no regulations. The growing popularity of ENDS and ENNDS has introduced a new and complex set of behaviours and exposures that might impact oral and overall health

Association of MIAT genetic variants and expression with tumor grade in oral tongue cancer.

Oral tongue cancer is an aggressive malignancy and represents the most common subsite of head and neck cancer. The long non-coding RNA myocardial infarction associated transcript (MIAT) has been implicated in the development and progression of several cancers. This study aimed to investigate the association between MIAT single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and oral cancer susceptibility as well as related clinicopathological characteristics. In this study, MIAT SNPs (rs4274, rs1061540, and rs1894720) were genotyped using real-time polymerase chain reaction in 1,194 controls and 397 male pati

Halitosis: An 8-Type Clinical Classification With Integrated Diagnostic and Therapeutic Algorithms.

Misclassification of halitosis frequently results in ineffective treatment. A clinical classification system is presented that organizes halitosis into eight types based on etiology and clinical presentation. Intraoral causes include tongue biofilm, periodontal disease, peri-implant disease, and xerostomia-associated halitosis, while extraoral causes comprise airway related conditions and metabolic/systemic disorders with pulmonary elimination of bloodborne compounds. Perceptual conditions are categorized as pseudohalitosis and halitophobia. A diagnostic workflow is proposed to guide clinician

Fissured Tongue associated with Hypothyroidism in a Young Patient.

Fissured tongue is a benign oral condition characterized by grooves or fissures on the dorsal surface of the tongue and is often considered idiopathic. However, it has occasionally been reported in association with systemic disorders, including endocrine abnormalities. We report the case of an 18-year-old male who presented with fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, and progressive fissuring of the tongue over several years. Intraoral examination revealed multiple prominent fissures on the dorsal surface of the tongue with mild macroglossia. Laboratory investigations demonstrated elevated th

Targeting sweet taste receptor T1R2/T1R3: a new strategy for metabolic disease regulation and intervention of multiple organ diseases.

The overconsumption of dietary sugars poses significant health risks, creating a conflict with the innate human preference for sweet taste. Beyond its role in taste perception on the tongue, the sweet taste receptor (STR, a heterodimer of T1R2/T1R3) serves as a crucial nutrient sensor in metabolic organs, including the gut and pancreas. Dysfunction of this receptor is linked to impaired metabolic regulation. This review comprehensively summarizes the structure and signaling pathways of T1R2/T1R3, with a particular focus on its interaction with various food-source sweet ligands, including natur
