Oral microbial diversity analysis among atrophic glossitis patients and healthy individuals.

Atrophic glossitis is a common disease in oral mucosal diseases. The Current studies have found the human oral cavity contains numerous and diverse microorganisms, their composition and diversity can be changed by various oral diseases. To understand the composition and diversity of oral microbiome in atrophic glossitis is better to explore the cause and mechanism of atrophic glossitis. The salivary microbiome is comprised of indigenous oral microorganisms that are specific to each person, exhibits long-term stability. We used llumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing based on the V3-V4 region

Low ambient temperature as a novel risk factor of oral diseases: A time-series study.

BACKGROUND: The seasonal variation of oral diseases has been observed in life, but the influences of oral diseases associated with non-optimal ambient temperature were unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether non-optimum ambient temperature is associated with increased risks of oral diseases. METHODS: We conducted a time series study based on outpatient data from the Shanghai Health Information Center, containing all public hospitals in Shanghai from 2016 to 2019. Generalized additive models with distributed lagged nonlinear models were applied to fit the data. RESULT: A total of 3,882,636 ou

Recognition and management of vitamin B12 deficiency: Report of four cases with oral manifestations.

Vitamins are organic compounds present in low concentrations in food, performing vital and specific cell metabolism functions. Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell formation in the bone marrow and its deficiency is caused, mainly, by gastrointestinal malabsorption. In addition to systemic manifestations, oral signs and symptoms have also been associated to this condition such as glossitis, papillary atrophy, painful erythema areas, burning sensation, dysgeusia, lingual paresthesia and itching. This study aims to report four cases of oral manifestations caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.

Construction of a Standardized Tongue Image Database for Diagnostic Education: Development of a Tongue Diagnosis e-Learning System.

Tongue examination is an important diagnostic method for judging pathological conditions in Kampo (traditional Japanese medicine), but it is not easy for beginners to learn the diagnostic technique. One reason is that there are few objective diagnostic criteria for tongue examination findings, and the educational method for tongue examination is not standardized in Japan, warranting the need for a tongue image database for e-learning systems that could dramatically improve the efficiency of education. Therefore, we constructed a database comprising tongue images whose findings were determined

Dermatological Manifestations in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) may be associated with extra-intestinal manifestations. Among these, mucocutaneous manifestations are relatively frequent, often difficult to diagnose and treat, and may complicate the course of the underlying disease. In the present review, a summary of the most relevant literature on the dermatologic manifestations occurring in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases has been reviewed. The following dermatological manifestations associated with IBDs have been identified: (i) specific manifestations with the same histological features of the underlying IBD

Oral manifestations of eating disorders in adolescent patients. A review.

AIM: Eating disorders (ED) are a group of psychopathological disorders that affect the patient's relationship with food and his own body and that are manifested mainly in adolescence and in young-adult age. ED include anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and other eating disorders as classified in the DMS-V. ED can result in several oral and dental manifestations that often occur in the early stages of ED and may allow early detection. The aim of the study is to describe the different oral and dental manifestations in patients with ED in order to offer a classification for their identif

Oral Candidosis: Pathophysiology and Best Practice for Diagnosis, Classification, and Successful Management.

Oral candidosis is the most common fungal infection that frequently occurs in patients debilitated by other diseases or conditions. No candidosis happens without a cause; hence oral candidosis has been branded as a disease of the diseased. Prior research has identified oral candidosis as a mark of systemic diseases, such as hematinic deficiency, diabetes mellitus, leukopenia, HIV/AIDS, malignancies, and carbohydrate-rich diet, drugs, or immunosuppressive conditions. An array of interaction between Candida and the host is dynamic and complex. Candida exhibits multifaceted strategies for growth,

Kaempferol suppresses proliferation and induces apoptosis and DNA damage in human gallbladder cancer cells through the CDK4/CDK6/cyclin D1 pathway.

BACKGROUND: to analyse the potential risk factors of tongue lesions, comparing the results with a control group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, case-control study was designed. The study included a case group comprising 336 patients with tongue lesions and 336 sex and age-matched controls. We recorded tobacco/alcohol habits, presence of dentures, allergies, medical conditions, and medications. Statistical analysis was performed via logistic regression models to estimate the odds ratio (OR) adjusted for gender, age, tobacco, and alcohol using propensity score-matching analysis (PSM).

Persistent Anti-Borrelia IgM Antibodies without Lyme Borreliosis in the Clinical and Immunological Context.

The aim of the study was to investigate the etiology of persistent IgM antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl) and to analyze their association with nonspecific symptoms. The study group comprised individuals with persistent IgM antibodies in the absence of IgG. The relation between ELISA values and time elapsed since past erythema migrans (EM) was analyzed. Previous antibiotic treatments were assessed. The association between persistent IgM and nonspecific symptoms was evaluated statistically. Specificity of IgM antibodies for outer surface protein C (OspC) of B. burgdorferi s

Fatal canine parvovirus-2 (CPV-2) infection in a rescued free-ranging Taiwanese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla).

Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 includes feline parvovirus (FPV), variants of canine parvovirus-2 (CPV-2), mink enteritis virus, and raccoon parvovirus, important pathogens affecting both wild and domestic carnivores. In this report, we described a fatal CPV-2 infection in a rescued Taiwanese pangolin, which provides the first evidence of CPV-2 infection in a non-carnivore. Post-rescue, the Taiwanese pangolin died from complications resulting from a severe panleucocytopenia and bloody diarrhoea. A full autopsy was performed and microscopic examination of the tissues revealed ulcerative, necrotizin
