Oral manifestations serve as potential signs of ulcerative colitis: A review.

As an immune dysregulation-related disease, although ulcerative colitis (UC) primarily affects the intestinal tract, extraintestinal manifestations of the disease are evident, particularly in the oral cavity. Herein, we have reviewed the various oral presentations, potential pathogenesis, and treatment of oral lesions related to UC. The oral manifestations of UC include specific and nonspecific manifestations, with the former including pyostomatitis vegetans and the latter encompassing recurrent aphthous ulcers, atrophic glossitis, burning mouth syndrome, angular cheilitis, dry mouth, taste ch

Significantly lower mean serum vitamin B12 and folic acid levels and a significantly higher frequency of serum iron deficiency in younger than in older atrophic glossitis patients.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: : Our previous study found that 19.0%, 16.9%, 5.3%, 2.3%, and 11.9% of 1064 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients have anemia, serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia, respectively. This study mainly evaluated the anemia, hematinic deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia in 224 younger (≤50 years old) and 840 older (>50 years old) AG patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The blood hemoglobin (Hb) and serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine levels in 224 younger and 840 older AG patients were measured and compared with the correspon

Vitamin B12 deficiency may play an etiological role in atrophic glossitis and its grading: A clinical case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Existing studies have reported the significant association between atrophic glossitis (AG) and hematinic deficiencies, including iron, folate and vitamin B12 deficiency. However, these findings were inconsistent. AG can be graded as partial or complete atrophy. It is still unclear whether hematinic deficiencies are associated with the grading of AG. METHODS: 236 AG patients and 208 sex- and age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Hematological tests including complete blood count, and serum levels of folate, ferritin and vitamin B12 were performed. The AG group w

Soluble LPS receptor CD14 is increased in saliva of patients with geographic tongue.

OBJECTIVES: The soluble bacterial pattern recognition receptor, sCD14 augments inflammatory responses in oral cavity. The aim of the study was to investigate whether patients with geographic tongue (GT) with and without fissured tongue (FT) have impaired inflammatory regulation, manifesting as increased levels of sCD14 in the saliva. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure the amount of sCD14 in whole and parotid saliva of patients diagnosed with GT (GT whole, n = 21; GT parotid, n = 23) and control subjects (GT whole, n = 25; GT parotid, n = 18). Oral changes in patients with psoriasis.

Psoriasis is one of the most frequent skin diseases. The cause of psoriasis is not fully expained as there are many factors (infectious, traumatic, hormonal, and chemical) that may play a role in the manifestation of its symptoms. One of the factors that may contribute to the appearance of psoriatic lesions may be the lesions in the oral cavity. The occurrence of lesions in the oral cavity is defined as rare, what can be explained by their nonspecific clinical image, and also by the possibility of being overlooked. Most characteristic symptoms of psoriasis occurring in the oral cavity are the

[Relationship between peripheral blood micronutrients and four kinds of oral mucosal diseases in children: clinical analysis of 217 cases].

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between peripheral blood micronutrient levels and 4 kinds of oral mucosal diseases (minor recurrent aphthous ulcer, angular cheilitis, cheilitis and geographic tongue) in children aged 0~14 years. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-two children with oral mucosal lesions (COML) and 65 healthy children (health control group, HC) were included. The clinical data of each group were recorded separately to compare whether there existed differences in the levels of serum water-soluble vitamins (vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, C), serum fat-soluble vitam

Worldwide prevalence of geographic tongue in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

To identify the prevalence of geographic tongue in patients >18 years. A systematic literature review was performed in search of population-based observational studies. Searches were performed using five main databases: Embase, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science; and three gray literature sources: Google Scholar, ProQuest, and OpenGrey. In addition, a manual search in the reference list and consultation with experts on the topic studied were performed. Methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute's checklist for prevalence studies. Ratio meta-analyses were perfo

Stress as worsening of the signs and symptoms of the geographic tongue during the COVID-19 pandemic: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Geographic Tongue (GT) is a benign inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, which is characterized by the loss of epithelium due to the atrophy of filiform papillae. It usually occurs on the dorsum of the tongue and may extend to its lateral edges. It appears as an erythematous area surrounded by whitish and slightly elevated margins. In most cases, the condition is asymptomatic, although some individuals may report symptoms that include a burning sensation of the tongue. OBJECTIVE: Assess whether there was a change in the clinical aspect of Geographic Tongue (GT) during the COV

A study on oral mucosal changes among tobacco users.

INTRODUCTION: Oral malignancies account for about 4% in males and 2% in females among all malignant tumors. Tobacco use in the oral cavity can cause potentially malignant disorders such as oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Factors such as lifestyle changes, habits and limited access to health care increase cancer development and morbidity. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at studying and correlating the oral mucosal changes among the tobacco users with the different forms of tobacco used. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four thousand and five hun

Some Manifestations of Tuberculosis in Otorhinolaryngology - Case Series and a Short Review of Related Data from South-Eastern Europe.

Tuberculosis is a disease of global outreach that may affect the entire human body but is most commonly located in the lungs. Otorhinolaryngological manifestations of tuberculosis are rare, mostly occurring secondary to pulmonary disease but nevertheless represent significant diagnostic challenges. Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is rare, representing around 1% of all upper air-way localizations and the most common presentation is in the form of adenoids. Tuberculous glossitis (oral tuberculosis) is even scarcer and may present in various clinical forms, usually mimicking a malignant neoplasm, or,

Colocalization of Radicular Pain and Erythema Migrans in Patients With Bannwarth Syndrome Suggests a Direct Spread of Borrelia Into the Central Nervous System.

BACKGROUND: There is a general assumption that after deposition into skin, Lyme borreliae disseminate hematogenously to other organs, resulting in extracutaneous manifestations of Lyme borreliosis, including Lyme neuroborreliosis. However, our experience over the past 40 years, along with several published case reports that observed colocalization of radicular pain and erythema migrans (EM) in patients with borrelial meningoradiculoneuritis (Bannwarth syndrome), argues against hematogenous dissemination in Lyme neuroborreliosis. METHODS: We compared the location of EM in 112 patients with Ban

Plasma cell gingivitis, an underestimated condition in patients with Sjögren's syndrome?

OBJECTIVES: To explore the correlation between the severity of radiotherapy-induced glossitis (RTG) and endothelial cell injury in local tissues in a rat model. STUDY DESIGN: The RTG animal model was designed and used by our team. The Oral mucositis index(OMI) was documented daily. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Staining of CD34 was utilized to identify endothelial cells in the RTG tissues. Apoptosis of endothelial cells in local lesions due to RTG was detected by the TUNEL assay. The dynamic relationship between the OMI and apoptotic endothelial cells was statistically analyzed by time. RESULTS
