Gross and Histopathology of Goats Feeding on Opuntia stricta in Laikipia County, Kenya.

Various plant species such as Opuntia stricta have developed defensive measures, namely, spines, thorns, and other sharp pointed structures to protect themselves from herbivores and other animals feeding on them. Opuntia stricta has invaded the northern part of Laikipia County, Kenya, and its fruits are protected by small spines called glochids. This study determined the pathology in goats feeding on this plant in Laikipia County. Eighteen goats that had eaten the plant and six others that were raised in a ranch without O. stricta were purchased for the study. All study animals were clinically

Are Oral Mucosal Changes a Sign of COVID-19? A Cross-Sectional Study at a Field Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has many manifestations, including respiratory, thrombotic, neurologic, digestive, and cutaneous ones. Cutaneous manifestations have been classified into 5 clinical patterns: acro-ischemic (pseudo-chilblain), vesicular, urticarial, maculopapular, and livedoid. Oral manifestations have also been reported, but much less frequently. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study in which we examined the oral mucosa of 666 patients with COVID-19 at the IFEMA field hospital in Madrid in April 2020. RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients (11.7%) h

Pyoderma gangrenosum and cobalamin deficiency in systemic lupus erythematosus: a rare but non fortuitous association.

BACKGROUND: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is an uncommon, idiopathic, ulcerative neutrophilic dermatosis. In many cases, PG is associated with a wide variety of different disorders but SLE in association with PG is relatively uncommon. In this article we present the case of a middle aged patient with PG as the initial clinical presentation of SLE. We also provide a brief review of cobalamin deficiency which occurred in our patient and evidence-based management options. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35 years old man presented with a 5 month history of debilitating painful lower limb and scrotal ulcers. Thi

Strategies to Increase the Production of Biosynthetic Riboflavin.

Riboflavin is widely regarded as an essential nutrient that is involved in biological oxidation in vivo. In addition to preventing and treating acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency in patients with keratitis, stomatitis, and glossitis, riboflavin is also closely related to the treatment of radiation mucositis and cardiovascular disease. Chemical synthesis has been the dominant method for producing riboflavin for approximately 50 years. Nevertheless, due to the intricate synthesis process, relatively high cost, and high risk of pollution, alternative methods of chemical syntheses, such as the ferm

Geographic tongue as a reaction-diffusion system.

Geographic tongue or benign migratory glossitis is a condition of an unknown cause characterized by chronic lesions that slowly migrate across the surface of the tongue. The condition's characteristic wavefronts suggest that it can be modeled as a reaction-diffusion system. Here, we present a model for geographic tongue pattern evolution using reaction-diffusion equations applied to portions of spheroids and paraboloids that approximate a tongue shape. We demonstrate that the observed patterns of geographic tongue lesions can be explained by propagating reaction-diffusion waves on these variab

Psoriasis is associated with fissured tongue but not geographic tongue: a prospective, cross-sectional, case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It has been postulated that psoriasis is associated with tongue lesions and geographic tongue might be "oral psoriasis". However, reports are inconclusive, prevalence rates vary and data for Europe are sparse. In this prospective case-control study we investigated the point-prevalence of tongue conditions in an Austrian cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Psoriasis patients and healthy volunteers were assessed regarding tongue and skin lesions, age, sex, smoking habits, allergies, onset of psoriasis, PASI scores and anti-psoriatic treatment. RESULTS: We included 173 psor

Association of Severe Tongue Edema With Prone Positioning in Patients Intubated for COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Prone positioning is frequently used in patients intubated for COVID-19-related lung injury to improve oxygenation. At our institution, we observed severe tongue edema develop in some of these patients. Hence, we sought to determine the incidence of tongue edema in this cohort and whether prone positioning was a risk factor associated with this complication. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: A single-system retrospective cohort study of patients intubated for respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19 who subsequently developed clinically notable tongue

Irradiation of the Normal Murine Tongue Causes Upregulation and Activation of Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) Ion Channels.

Signal transduction at sensory neurons occurs via transmembrane flux of cations, which is largely governed by the transient receptor potential (TRP) family of ion channels. It is unknown whether TRP channel activation contributes to the pain that accompanies radiation-induced oral mucositis. This study sought to characterize changes in TRP channel expression and function that occur in the locally irradiated tissues and afferent neurons of mice. Female CD-1 mice received single high-dose (27 Gy) tongue irradiation, or sham irradiation. Animals were euthanized either before overt glossitis devel

Oral Manifestations in Patients with COVID-19: A 6-Month Update.

This is the first update of the previously published living systematic review that summarized evidence on the prevalence of oral signs and symptoms in patients with COVID-19. Hitherto, 183 studies were included, reporting data from 64,876 patients with COVID-19 worldwide. The overall prevalence of taste disorders was 38% (95% CI = 22% to 56%, I2 = 98%). Hypogeusia, dysgeusia, and ageusia were also evaluated by a meta-analysis, and the pooled prevalence was 34% for hypogeusia, 33% for dysgeusia, and 26% for ageusia. Taste disorders were associated with a positive COVID-19 test (odds ratio [OR]

Medical Management, Orofacial Findings, and Dental Care for the Patient with Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in North America, next to Alzheimer's disease. Patients who suffer from PD typically present with neuromuscular, cognitive, postural and psychiatric deficits, which make oral hygiene challenging, but extremely important. Although the cardinal signs of PD are movement-related, manifestations in the orofacial complex are ubiquitous. Weakened facial musculature, gaunt appearance, tremors of the tongue, lips and eyes, erratic mandibular movements, bruxism, xerostomia, sialorrhea, dysphagia, dysgeusia and glossitis are

Tongue nodules in an atypical canine leishmaniasis in Brazil.

We aimed to report a case of canine leishmaniasis with the only visible clinical sign being the presence of nodules in the lateral region of the tongue. The bitch was treated for a mandibular fracture, when multiple small nodules were observed on the tongue. We identify nodular glossitis with the presence of structures compatible with amastigote forms of Leishmania. The bitch was positive by ELISA, RIFI and PCR assays. Clinical re-evaluation after one year of treatment for leishmaniasis showed clinical improvement, but there was maintenance of antibody titers and infectivity. Lingual nodules a

Study on the Value of DCE-MRI in Differentiating Glossitis and Tongue Cancer and the Intratumour Heterogeneity.

OBJECTIVE: DCE-MRI is an imaging technique that reflects the blood perfusion status of the tissue's microcirculation. The purpose of this article is to explore the clinical value of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI in distinguishing benign and malignant tongue lesions and the internal heterogeneity of a tumour. METHODS: The patients were divided into a tongue cancer group (22 patients) and a glossitis group (7 patients) based on the pathology results. All of the patients underwent DCE-MRI examination. RESULTS: The results of this study showed that the volume transfer constant (Ktrans), ra

Interesting Presentation of Oral Herpes Simplex Virus in a High-Risk Patient.

Orolabial and genital herpes are common conditions caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) that affect many individuals. Although skin findings may mimic other conditions, an HSV infection may still be diagnosed clinically. We present a case of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) negative orolabial herpes in a young male with a high-risk social history. Although testing was negative, oral HSV was clinically diagnosed and the patient was adequately treated with IV acyclovir. Both clinical history and physical examination are essential to provide an accurate diagnosis even in cases presenting with a ne
