Fissured tongue responding to biologics during the treatment of psoriasis: the importance of detecting oral involvement of psoriasis.

Recent studies have provided more evidence that psoriasis can give mucosal lesions, especially oral. Nonspecific lesions such as fissured tongue and geographic tongue are relatively frequent in patients suffering from psoriasis. We report a case of a patient presenting an important improvement of his fissured tongue paralleling the improvement of the cutaneous lesions after a 5-month systemic therapy with infliximab. The authors think it would be important to consider possible oral lesions in patients suffering from psoriasis in normal practice and to evaluate them introducing specific clinica

[Analysis of oral mucosal lesions in patients referred to oral medicine specialists].

The need for studies on prevalence of lesions in the field of oral medicine increases as more patients suffer from oral mucosal diseases. Data on prevalence of oral mucosal diseases throughout the world are scarce. Therefore, we have made a retrospective study of patients referred to the Department of Oral Medicine, University of Zagreb, during a period of one year, i.e. 2010. Data on patient age, gender and diagnosis were recorded. Out of 1118 analyzed clinical records of the patients, 756 (67.6%) were women and 362 (32.4%) were men. The age range of female patients was 54 +/- 19 years (mean

The comparison of salivary level of estrogen and progesterone in 1(st) , 2(nd) and 3(rd) trimester in pregnant women with and without geographic tongue.

BACKGROUND: Geographic tongue (GT) was first reported as a wandering rash of the tongue in 1831; however, its etiopathogenesis remains unclear. Increased prevalence of GT has been documented in the pregnancy. The aim of this study was to compare the level of salivary estrogen and progesterone in pregnant women with and without GT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This analytical-descriptive study consisted of 26 pregnant women (13 with GT, 13 without GT) with an age range between 18 years and 45 years. The estrogen and progesterone level was measured during 1(st) , 2(nd) and 3(rd) trimester of pregnanc

Chronic lingual papulosis: new, independent entity or "mature" form of transient lingual papillitis?

OBJECTIVE: Several acute, usually pediatric variants of edematous, symptomatic fungiform lingual papillitis have been reported since the 1990s, most notably transient lingual papillitis (TLP); but no chronic forms have been mentioned. Is there a chronic counterpart, akin to the older palatal examples of inflammatory papillary hyperplasia? The objective of this study was to clinicopathologically characterize a previously unreported entity with clustered, chronic fibrous papules (nonsyndromic) of the tongue. METHODS: Cases were collected from clinics in 2 dental schools. RESULTS: Five women an

Increased prevalence of geographic tongue in burning mouth complaints: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the frequency of geographic tongue and fissured tongue (GFT) in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Our hypothesis was that benign soft tissue changes to the tongue, such as GFT, are associated with BMS. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of 161 patients with BMS and 87 TMJ dysfunction cases as control. Frequency of GFT and demographics for both groups was assessed. RESULTS: In the BMS group, 26.7% of the subjects were diagnosed with GFT, whereas in the control group, 11.5% had GFT (P < .05). In the subgroup of BMS with GFT, the m

Benign migratory glossitis with fissured tongue.

Symptomatic benign migratory glossitis (BMG) or "geographic tongue" is a rare occurrence in pediatric dentistry though asymptomatic BMG is comparatively common. BMG presents itself as an ulcer-like region on the dorsum of the tongue, which may recur at different sites on the tongue, creating a migratory appearance. Asymptomatic cases usually resolve on their own but symptomatic cases need treatment. Fissured tongue is a benign condition characterized by deep grooves on the dorsum of the tongue and, in many cases, is associated with geographic tongue. This article presents a case of symptomatic

Geographic stomatitis: an oral manifestation of psoriasis?

BACKGROUND: Geographic stomatitis is an uncommon oral lesion that presents similar clinical, histopathological and genetic features as those of psoriasis. These findings suggest that this lesion may actually represent an oral manifestation of psoriasis. We report one case of geographic stomatitis and discuss a possible connection between this condition and psoriasis. MAIN OBSERVATIONS: A 37-year-old woman presented with red patches, surrounded by a white border on the labial mucosa and a positive family history of psoriasis. Histopathological examination, immunohistochemical analysis with ant

[Rare or unusual forms of psoriasis].

Apart from plaque-type psoriasis, there are multiple particular or rare clinical presentations, according to signs and symptoms, localization or distribution of lesions. Psoriasis can affect mucous membranes, especially the genital areas of male and female patients, causing pain or burning sensation and decreased quality of life. Geographic tongue is not specific of psoriasis, but is more frequent in this context. Other localizations like the lips and the eylids are rare, but should not be overlooked. Certain lesions have an unusual distribution, like psoriasis gyrata and blaschko linear forms

In search of oral psoriasis.

Even though psoriasis is a common skin disorder, reports of it involving the oral cavity are exceedingly rare, with less than 100 publications in the literature. Biopsy-proven oral psoriasis has been reported in the oral medical literature, but the commonest oral mucosal findings in most studies are associated non-specific features including fissured and geographic tongue. Case series on this entity have not provided any definitive data to support its existence. From the evidence available to date, it is still unclear if oral psoriasis is a distinct entity or if, indeed, it exists.

Annular plaques on the tongue: what is your diagnosis?

Geographic tongue is an inflammatory disorder of the tongue characterized by asymptomatic erythematous patches with serpiginous borders. Candidiasis of the tongue may be confused with geographic tongue. A 63-year-old male patient with painful white annular lesions localized to the left side of his tongue is presented. He applied topical corticosteroid and antiinflammatory agents, but his lesions did not respond to those therapies. Using direct mycologic examination and culture, the patient was diagnosed with candidiasis. After systemic and topical antifungal therapy, clinical improvement was o
