Mitral Valve Repair with a Semi-Rigid C-Band Annuloplasty Ring in Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation: Still a Viable Surgical Option?

BACKGROUND: Ischemic mitral valve regurgitation (IMR) develops in approximately 10% of patients after myocardial infarction. Surgical management of IMR is controversial, as many series have failed to demonstrate the superiority of mitral valve repair (MVRep) over mitral valve replacement (MVR) in IMR. Moreover, in the setting of MVRep, the choice of ring type is the subject of much debate. The study aim was to evaluate the results of MVRep in IMR with the use of a semi-rigid incomplete C-ring. METHODS: Between January 2006 and May 2014, a total of 105 patients (79 males, 26 females; mean age

Frequency of Pathologic Changes in the Oral Cavity in Patients Subjected to Long-term Pharmacologic Immunosuppressive Therapy After Kidney, Liver, and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Patients subjected to long-term immunosuppressive therapy after organ and cells transplantation are more susceptible than healthy people to the development of the pathologic changes in the oral cavity, including precancerous lesions, oral cancers, lesions following viral infections (herpes simplex virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus), fungal infections mainly caused by Candida albicans, drug-induced gingival overgrowth, stomatitis, and tongue disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical case material included 38 patients after kidney, liver, or blood-forming cells transp

Salivary levels of interleukin-8 and growth factors are modulated in patients with geographic tongue.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the levels of salivary epidermal growth factor (EGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as well as interleukin-8 (IL-8) in patients with geographic tongue (GT), as compared to control subjects. METHODOLOGY: An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure the levels of IL-8, EGF and VEGF in whole saliva samples collected from 34 patients with GT and 38 control subjects. The patients and controls were grouped and matched according to age, gender and the presence of systemic diseases, which are factors that may influence the l

Investigation of the clinical features of geographic tongue: unveiling its relationship with oral psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the clinical features of geographic tongue (GT), an inflammatory lesion, making diagnosis and the investigation of oral psoriasis difficult. PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical features of GT to facilitate its identification and understand its relationship with psoriasis. METHODS: A total of 96 participants diagnosed with GT underwent stomatological and dermatological examinations. The parameters assessed were burning sensation; number, classification, and location of lesions; loss of papillae; severity of GT lesions; and association with fissured tongu

Oral mucosal lesions in teenagers: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period of transition to adulthood. Little is known about oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) in teenagers, in which the emergence of new habits, unfamiliar to children, could affect the type of lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) in a wide sample of adolescents. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out examining all medical records of adolescents (aged 13-18 years) treated at the Dental Clinic of the University of Brescia (Italy) in the period from 2008 to 2014. Cases with OMLs were selected.

Geographic tongue: assessment of peripheral nerve status, Langerhans cell, and HLA-DR expression.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine whether geographic tongue (GT) is an antigen-driven condition by assessing Langerhans cell numbers and the expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DP, -DQ, and -DR in the epithelium of GT and to assess peripheral nerve status for any possible damage/injury association by quantifying neurite area in connective tissue in GT. STUDY DESIGN: Randomly selected samples of GT were examined by using routine immunoperoxidase staining methods to S100 protein, neurofilament, CD1a, and HLA class II. The Student t test and Mann-Whitney U test w

Lingual microbiota profiles of patients with geographic tongue.

Geographic tongue (GT) is an oral mucosal lesion that affects the tongue. The association between GT and the bacterial colonization profiles of the tongue is not clear. Lingual swabs were collected from lesion sites and healthy sites of 35 patients with GT (19 males and 16 females; Mage = 54.3 ± 16.1 years) and 22 controls (12 males and 10 females; Mage = 56.3 ± 15.8 years). Bacterial DNA was extracted and sequenced by next-generation sequencing. At the phylum level, Fusobacteria were significantly less abundant, while Spirochaetes were significantly more abundant in GT patients compared to co

Digestive system in psoriasis: an update.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory immune-mediated disorder associated and often coexisting with many other immune-related clinical conditions including those affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Data obtained from the reviewed literature suggest an association between psoriasis and pathologies of the oral cavity, both psoriasis-specific lesions, as well as non-specific, such as geographic tongue or fissured tongue. These findings show the importance of thorough examination of oral mucosa in psoriatic patients. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are also linked with psoriasis. Crohn's disease

(1) Background: Celiac disease (CD) patients can be affected by mouth and tooth disorders, which are influenced by their gluten-free diet. The aim of our research was to evaluate the pathological conditions of the stomatognathic system observed in celiac patients on a gluten-free diet. (2) Methods: we consecutively recruited celiac patients on a gluten-free diet at our celiac center, as well as healthy volunteers. Two dentists examined all patients/controls and checked them for any mouth disorder. (3) Results: Forty-nine patients affected by celiac disease (age at test 31.8 ± 11.58, time on GF

The Journey of "Geographic Atrophy" through Past, Present, and Future.

"Geographic atrophy" is a concise term that has been firmly established for the description of the end-stage manifestation of nonexudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). "Geographic lesions" resembling sharply demarcated continents on a map have been originally described in the German literature in 1854 (landkartenartiger/inselförmiger Zungenfratt) for a manifestation later called "geographic tongue" in English. In 1970, Gass was the first to describe "geographic areas of atrophy" in "senile macular choroidal degeneration." Within a decade, the disease itself was named "geographic atr

Role of FDG PET/CT Scan in Head and Neck Cancer Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review of the literature and to evaluate, in patients with chronic periodontitis, what the effect is of subgingival debridement (SGD), in terms of bleeding on probing, pocket depth and probing attachment level. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An electronic search of the Cochrane Oral Health Group specialized register and MEDLINE were performed using specific search terms to identify studies assessing in patients with chronic periodontitis the effect of subgingival debridement with regard to clinical outcomes. This was performed on titles

Paediatric Geographic Tongue: A Case Report, Review and Recent Updates.

Geographic tongue is a benign recurrent condition of uncertain aetiology affecting the tongue characterized by loss of epithelium especially filiform papillae giving a characteristic appearance. The clinical presentation may vary from asymptomatic to painful and burning ulceration. The condition is commonly seen in adults but few cases are reported in children. A case of asymptomatic geographic tongue in three-year-old male child and literature review with new insight in aetiology is presented here. Management depends on the clinical condition and underlying aetiology.
