Prevalence of Dental Enamel Defects, Aphthous-Like Ulcers and Other Oral Manifestations in Celiac Children and Adolescents: A Comparative Study.

Objectives: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease with typical, atypical and asymptomatic forms, in which many oral manifestations have been recognized. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of oral manifestations as well as explore if oral examination could be used as a first diagnostic screening tool for atypical or asymptomatic forms. Study Design: 45 CD patients, between 2 and 18 years (mean age 10.3) and 45 healthy subjects, age and gender-matched, were examined for hard and soft tissue lesions such as dental enamel defects (DED), dental caries, aphthous-like ulcers (ALU), atr

Oral Fungal Microbiota: To Thrush and Beyond.

The oral microbiota is complex, multikingdom, interactive, and involves extensive biofilm formation. While dominated by bacteria, Candida is a frequent member of this microbiota; however, several other potentially pathogenic fungi (among around 100 identified species) appear to reside in some individuals, including Cryptococcus, Aspergillus, and Fusarium. Oral candidiasis may manifest as a variety of disease entities in normal hosts and in the immunocompromised. These include pseudomembranous candidiasis (thrush), hyperplastic or atrophic (denture) candidiasis, linear gingival erythema, median

Genetic and developmental disorders of the oral mucosa: Epidemiology; molecular mechanisms; diagnostic criteria; management.

A large number of disorders may affect the oral cavity, including genetic diseases, infections, cancers, blood diseases, skin diseases, endocrine and metabolic disorders, autoimmune and rheumatologic diseases, local lesions, to name a few. Oral mucosa shows a considerable variation in its normal structure and a wide range of conditions may affect it. Such conditions are often harmless or minor and could be primary or secondary to systemic disease. Several of them are quite rare and, hence, the diagnosis is not easy. Clinically, lesions may appear as ulcers, discoloration of the oral mucosa and

Management of Congenital Urethral Strictures In Infants. Case Series.

PURPOSE: Infra-vesical obstruction is uncommon in infants and generally due to urethral valves. Congenital urethral strictures (CUS), instead, defined as a concentric narrowing of the urethral lumen, are exceedingly rare in infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed our experience with 7 patients treated at our institution for CUS <age of 1-year. The study is a retrospective review of 7 patients treated for CUS diagnosed <age 1-year during a 10-year period. RESULT: In a single patient, the urethral stricture was an isolated condition, 3 had a Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS) and the remaining 3 h

Characteristics of lingual papillae in diabetic rats.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder resulting with many different complications including soft tissue abnormalities in the oral cavity such as periodontitis and salivary and taste dysfunction. Previous studies also reported fungal and bacterial infections in oral cavity in these patients. This study aims to represent three dimentional morphologic ultrastructural changes of the diabetic rat tongue via scanning electron microscopy. Twenty-four (24) adult male Spraque-Dawley rats, (weight ranging between 200-250g) included in the study were randomly assigned into two groups: control ra

Update from the 4th Edition of the World Health Organization of Head and Neck Tumours: Tumours of the Oral Cavity and Mobile Tongue.

There have been several additions and deletions in Chapter 4 on Tumours of the oral cavity and mobile tongue in the 2017 fourth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumours of the Head and Neck. This chapter excludes the oropharynx, which now is a stand-alone chapter acknowledging the uniqueness of the oropharynx from the oral cavity. New entries in Chapter 4 include rhabdomyoma, haemangioma, schwannoma, neurofibroma and myofibroblastic sarcoma in the section titled Soft tissue and neural tumours. Discussion of salivary gland entities have been reduced and includes mucoep

Disabled homolog 2 controls macrophage phenotypic polarization and adipose tissue inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Fissured tongue (FT), geographic tongue (GT) and median rhomboid glossitis (MRG) are frequently misdiagnosed and overtreated. FT is a relatively common variant of the tongue that includes numerous grooves or fissures on the dorsum of the tongue, while GT usually appears as areas of atrophy and raised white borders. MRG is an erythematous patch of atrophic papillae located in the central area of the dorsum of the tongue. The prevalence of these lesions varies among different ethnic groups. However, their occurrence among the adult Israeli Jewish population of different ethnic origin

Perception of iron deficiency from oral mucosa alterations that show a high prevalence of Candida infection.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common cause of anemia. The aim of this study was to investigate patients with oral mucosa alterations as the initial manifestation of ID or ID anemia (IDA). METHODS: Sixty-four patients (50 IDA and 14 ID) with a wide range of sore mouth were diagnosed and treated. The oral and physical manifestations as well as iron studies and anemia classification based on the mean and heterogeneity of red cell size were assessed. RESULTS: ID predisposed 64 patients to a high incidence of Candida infection (85%) and showed a variety of oral manifestatio

[A woman with a red demarcation of the tongue].

A 68-year-old woman had a red demarcation of the tongue, without any discomfort. Because of the use of corticosteroid inhalations, it was thought that this was caused by median rhomboid glossitis, based on Candida albicans. Oral antimycotic therapy made the demarcation disappear, which confirmed the diagnosis.

Application of the novel method in the diagnosis and treatment of median rhomboid glossitis Candida-associated.

The aim of this work is to demonstrate how current molecular techniques should be integrated in the diagnostic process and can have a crucial role in the management of oral fungal infections. A case of median rhomboid glossitis Candida-associated and its resolution will be described step by step. At the time of the first observation, the lesion on the surface of the tongue did not respond to the previous administration of topical antifungal agent, such a nystatin. Firstly, in order to identify the causative agent and confirm Candida albicans infection, a brushing of the lesion was performed an

Langerhans cells and their role in oral mucosal diseases.

Dendritic cells are arguably the most potent antigen-presenting cells and may be the only cells capable of initiating the adaptive immune response. The epithelial residents of dendritic cells are Langerhans cells, which serve as the "sentinels" of the mucosa, altering the immune system not only to pathogen entry but also of tolerance to self antigen and commensal microbes. Oral mucosal Langerhans cells are capable of engaging and internalizing a wide variety of pathogens and have been found responsive to nickel in patients with nickel allergies, oral Candida species, oral lichen planus, lichen

Oral findings of rothmund-thomson syndrome.

Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS) is an extremely rare genetic condition exhibiting some dermatological, craniofacial, ophthalmological, and central nervous system abnormalities. It has an autosomal, recessive inheritance and its signs begin at childhood. Essential dermatological alteration is poikilodermatosis. A large head with an frontal bossing and broad low nasal bridge has been described in patients with RTS. Bilateral juvenile cataract is a characteristic finding of patients with RTS. Most of the patients have been markedly short and the growth retardation has been proportionate. Mental r

Urban legends series: oral candidosis.

Candida species (spp) are commensal yeast that can only instigate oral infection (oral candidosis - OC) when there is an underlying predisposing condition in the host. We investigated four controversial topics on OC: (i) How can a microbiological determination of OC be made as Candida spp. are commensal yeasts and not all of them form hyphae or pseudohyphae during infection? (ii) Is median rhomboid glossitis (MRG) a manifestation of candidal infection? (iii) Can candidal infection cause palate papillary hyperplasia (PPH)? (iv) What is the best therapeutic treatment for denture-associated eryth
