Quantitative evaluation of Langerhans cells in median rhomboid glossitis.

Langerhans cells (LC) serve as antigen presenting cells and provide immune surveillance within epithelia. Since depression of LC number and/or function may allow tolerance to antigens, we evaluated LC in median rhomboid glossitis (MRG), a condition linked to persistent candidal infection of lingual mucosa. Material included a total of 36 cases of MRG (7 of which did not show PAS + fungi) and 6 controls. LC were identified by their expression of S-100 and HLA-DR antigens and quantified using image analysis. Equal numbers of LC were identified using S-100 + and HLA-DR + markers. The density of L

Median rhomboid glossitis: secondary to colonisation of the tongue by Actinomyces (a case report).

Median rhomboid glossitis is an inflammatory lesion of the tongue, now believed to be secondary to candidiasis. We document a case of median rhomboid glossitis with heavy colonisation by Actinomyces in a 60-year-old male. We propose that Actinomyces, like Candida, induces pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia of the mucosa of the tongue and florid inflammatory hyperplasia of the underlying connective tissue, resulting in the characteristic elevated lesion. Actinomyces has not earlier been implicated as a cause of median rhomboid glossitis.

Classification and clinical manifestations of oral yeast infections.

By tradition oral candidosis has been classified into acute pseudomembranous (thrush), acute atrophic, chronic atrophic, and chronic hyperplastic types. However, pseudomembranous candidosis is not always acute but may last for many months. Furthermore, the value of using the term atrophic to describe an erythematous area is limited. Moreover, some of the various types have been associated with other clinical entities, which appear to have a combined bacterial/mycologic etiology. A revision of the classification should be based on the use of clinical terms, and in a previous study of multifocal

Median rhomboid glossitis: review of a puzzling entity.

This article discusses changing theories concerning median rhomboid glossitis (MRG). MRG is an uncommon lesion and when improperly diagnosed may be confused with carcinoma.

Oral candidosis in HIV-infected patients.

Over 80% of all HIV-infected patients develop oral candidosis at some stage during their disease. This provides a marker for the development of fullblown AIDS--in one study more than 50% proceeded to the full syndrome within three months of the development of buccal lesions, although some of these may have had asymptomatic oesophageal candidosis at the time of initial presentation. Oral candidosis appears to be particularly common in young children and Africans who are HIV-infected. Both pseudomembranous and atrophic forms occur, but the atrophic manifestation, which is often asymptomatic, oft

Candidal infection of the tongue with nonspecific inflammation of the palate.

A retrospective study of ten patients with median rhomboid glossitis (MRG) revealed the presence of a nonspecific inflammatory reaction of varying degrees of severity in the overlying palatal mucosa. Clinical records and photographs indicated that the palatal reactions physically approximated the underlying glossal lesions, suggesting a relationship between these entities. The nature of the relationship is uncertain, but it may involve a localized infection of the palatal mucosa by Candida species, from the MRG. Alternatively, irritation by soluble, possibly Candida-related factors from the MR

Developmental oral anomalies among schoolchildren in Gizan region, Saudi Arabia.

The present report gives prevalence values for some developmental oral anomalies in 1932 schoolchildren aged 6-12 yr in Gizan region, Saudi Arabia. The developmental oral anomalies identified in this study were: torus palatinus (1.4%), fissured tongue (0.8%), geographic tongue (0.2%), and tongue tie (0.1%). None of the following developmental oral anomalies were observed: lip pits, cleft lip and/or palate, torus mandibularis, microglossia, macroglossia or median rhomboid glossitis.

Candida albicans in median rhomboid glossitis. A postmortem study.

To investigate the possible rôle of Candida in median rhomboid glossitis, the presence of Candida was looked for both in the foramen cecum area and the lateral borders of 100 human cadaver tongues. Almost equal %s were found in both locations. Although extrapolation of findings from postmortem material to normal subjects is somewhat hazardous, the results seem to question the importance of Candida in the etiology of median rhomboid glossitis.

Oral candidiasis--its pleomorphic clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment.

Up to 60% of the population carry Candida albicans as part of the oral flora without having evidence of candidiasis. The pleomorphic clinical manifestations of oral candidiasis viz. thrush, denture stomatitis, angular cheilitis, median rhomboid glossitis, speckled leukoplakia, and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and its variants are briefly discussed. Current diagnostic techniques of oral candidiasis (OC) are reviewed. A simple and quick method of helping the clinician in the diagnosis of OC by taking a direct smear of the lesion is emphasized. OC is a 'disease of the diseased'. As a routine

Tobacco smoking and denture wearing as local aetiological factors in median rhomboid glossitis.

The importance of tobacco smoking and denture wearing in the aetiology of median rhomboid glossitis (MRG) has been evaluated in 39 patients. Significantly more of the MRG patients (85%) smoked tobacco compared with the corresponding proportion (41%) of the 39 healthy age-and sex-matched control subjects. Their tobacco consumption was also heavier. A significantly greater proportion of the MRG patients wore their dentures continuously compared with the controls. The number of MRG patients who were both tobacco smokers and denture wearers was significantly increased above that of the control gro

Candidiasis and atrophic tongue lesions.

In an attempt to shed more light on the role of Candida albicans in the genesis of median rhomboid glossitis, a three-part study of normal, atrophic, and cadaver tongues was undertaken. Occasional fungal hyphae were found in 36 percent of the clinically normal tongues. Hyphae were far more numerous in cytologic smears from atrophic tongue lesions than in those from normal tongues. More than 40 percent of the cadaver tongues showed fungal hyphae. The possible role of C. albicans as a cause of median rhomboid glossitis is discussed in the light of these findings.

[Glossitis rhombica mediana. A study of 4422 dermatologic patients].

Though known for a long time and by no means rare, median rhomboid glossitis (MRG) still gives rise to questions concerning its dignity and etiology. MRG was found in 54 out of 4,422 stomatologically investigated dermatological patients. The patient's ages ranged from 10 to 69 years, the sex ratio was 3:1 male to female. Candida albicans was found in 18 out of 22 MRG lesions examined mycologically. These findings, the constant location and the stationary course were interpreted as a secondary Candida albicans colonization on a dysembryogenetically determined locus minoris resistentiae. Dysembr

Median rhomboid glossitis caused by Candida?

The etiology and pathogenesis of median rhomboid glossitis have been subjects of controversial discussions for a long time. In recent years, the possible role of Candida albicans has been stressed. The findings in 18 patients with median rhomboid glossitis only support partly the hypothesis of Candida albicans being an important etiologic factor.

[Median candidiasis of the tongue (glossitis mediana candidamycetica) (author's transl)].

The median rhomboid glossitis is generally considered as a developmental anomaly of the tongue. Recent clinical, biological and experimental studies provide support for a fongous etiology: this lesion of the midline of the tongue is a chronic hyperplastic oral candidiasis, occurring sometimes in association with candidal commissural leukoplakias and palatine kissing lesions. The yeasts--mainly Candida albicans-- invade the upper parakeratotic layers of the epithelium inducing a proliferating acanthosis of the deeper epithelial ridges; superficial micro-pustules closely related to the candidal
