OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia, defined by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) as loss of muscle strength, mass and function, is an underestimated complication in systemic sclerosis (SSc). We aimed to assess sarcopenia prevalence in SSc, identify clinical correlations, and evaluate its prognostic impact.
METHODS: Consecutive adult SSc patients underwent multidisciplinary same-day assessment (rheumatologists, physiotherapists, nutritionists) and HAQ administration. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the EWGSOP2 algorithm: SARC-F questionnaire and/or clinical suspicion for

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a complex chronic disorder characterized symptomatically by burning sensation mainly localized in the tongue with no specific lesions. Its etiology is not fully understood. Due to the persistent pain and unsatisfactory outcome of treatment, patients with high expectation when seeking medical advice easily feel discontent after treatment, which might cause medical dispute. This review introduces the epidemiology, manifestations, etiology, diagnosis, classification and treatment of BMS. The authors hope the current advances about BMS, mainly focus on the etiology

BACKGROUND: Pathological complete response (pCR) is rare in hormone receptor-positive (HR+) HER2-negative breast cancer (BC) treated with either endocrine therapy (ET) or chemotherapy. Radical resection of locoregional relapse, although potentially curative in some cases, is challenging when the tumor invades critical structures. The oral cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitor palbociclib in combination with ET has obtained a significant increase in objective response rates and progression-free survival in patients with advanced BC and is now being evaluated in the neoadjuvant setting. We prese

Burning mouth syndrome/glossodynia and trigeminal neuropathic conditions can have serious negative impact on a patient's overall quality of life. These conditions are often hard to diagnose and even harder to fully treat and manage, but it is important for dentists/oral and maxillofacial surgeons to be aware of these conditions and modalities of their treatment. Often the only method for arriving at the proper diagnosis is for patients to undergo traditional approaches for treatment of presenting signs and symptoms, and it is the unexpected failure of interventional therapies that leads ultima

BACKGROUND: Pain in glossodynia may be severe; it may prevent patients from working, interfere with daily life activities, and necessitate a patient's visit to a medical institution for consultation and treatment. The pain may be described as persistent and burning (tingling, tingling) or stinging. Patients may complain of dry mouth (dryness), which is thought to cause inflammation of the tongue and gingival mucous membranes and increased pain. Medications are prescribed based on the symptoms of glossodynia, and the therapeutic effect is confirmed. However, each drug has side effects, for exam

OBJECTIVE: To develop a beta version of a preliminary set of empirically derived research diagnostic criteria (RDC) for burning mouth syndrome (BMS) through expert consensus, which can then be taken into a test period before publication of a final RDC/BMS.
DESIGN: A 6 round Delphi process with twelve experts in the field of BMS was used. The first round formed a focus group during which the purpose of the RDC and the definition of BMS was agreed upon, as well as the structure and contents. The remaining rounds were carried out virtually via email to achieve a consensus of the beta version of

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by chronic pain in the skeletal system accompanied by stiffness, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and psychiatric problems, such as anxiety and depression. Fibromyalgia commonly affects orofacial health, presenting with a variety of oral manifestations, including temporomandibular disorder, xerostomia, glossodynia, and dysgeusia. Therefore, oral healthcare providers need to be aware of this clinical entity to effectively manage oral symptoms and provide proper oral self-care modification and education on the nature of fibromyalgia. This review focuses on the

A case-report of burning mouth syndrome is presented. A 27-year-old man complained of burning pain in the tongue and oral mucosa, taste disorder, and sensory impairment. All symptoms appeared after suffering a cold and had a wave-like course during self-medication with antibiotics. The pain has continued for 8 months. Diagnoses of atypical facial pain, glossodynia or secondary facial pain (craniomandibular dysfunction) were made. The effect of treatment in the hospital (carbamazepine, amitriptyline, haloperidol, phenozepam) was not achieved. A microbial test showed a higher number of pathogeni

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic condition characterized by a burning sensation of the oral cavity and is often associated with taste disturbances and xerostomia. It primarily affects menopausal or postmenopausal women. Idiopathic or primary BMS can occur spontaneously and without any identifiable precipitating factors. When BMS is associated with systemic factors, it is defined as secondary BMS. While the exact etiology of BMS is still unknown, the condition appears to be multifactorial, and numerous local, systemic, and psychological factors have been associated with it. Primary BMS

A 60-year-old woman presented to our department with severe tongue pain. On initial examination, the mucosal surface of the tongue was intact but a hard submucosal mass on the dorsum of the tongue was detected on palpation. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an ill-defined tumor in the intrinsic tongue muscles. Sequential whole-body positron emission tomography/computed tomography revealed a tumor of the pancreas apart from the tongue lesion, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed gastric mucosa ulceration. On biopsy, the tongue lesion was confirmed to be metastatic gastric adenoca

Giant cell arteritis is a systemic vasculitis that affects arteries of medium and large caliber, mainly the aorta artery and its main branches. It is more frequent in women older than 50 years. The most common symptoms are fever, jaw claudication, headache, hyperesthesia of the scalp and loss of vision with anterior ischemic optic nerve disease. But, in a minority of cases, less frequent symptoms are observed that delay and make more difficult the diagnosis. Here, we present the case of a 76-year-old woman who came to our consultation having pain in the oral cavity and presenting tongue and ne

Benign pathologies of the oral mucosa. An overview of some common benign oral diseases whose diagnostic orientation begins and is based primarily on a precise clinical analysis. Canker sores and benign traumatic ulcers must not make a novice carcinoma go unnoticed. Apart from bacterial stomatitis of dental origin, the most common infectious stomatitis is viral with herpes and papilloma, mycotic with acute and chronic forms. Oral dryness and glossodynia are two common situations that are difficult to manage.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome is a poorly understood disease process with no current standard of treatment. The goal of this article is to provide an evidence-based, practical, clinical algorithm as a guideline for the treatment of burning mouth syndrome.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using available evidence and clinical experience, a multi-step management algorithm was developed. A retrospective cohort study was then performed, following STROBE statement guidelines, comparing outcomes of patients who were managed using the algorithm and those who were managed without.
RESULTS: Forty-seven pat

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic disorder for which a definitive etiopathology is not known. The BMS patient often experiences a continuous burning pain in the mouth without any clinical signs. This confusing condition can create frustration for both patient and practitioner. Ultimately, it is important for the practitioner who treats head and face pain to become knowledgeable in the recognition of the many complexities and various presentations associated with BMS. In doing so, the practitioner can be better prepared to help patients cope with this confounding disorder and gain a bet

Management of patients with orofacial pain may benefit from a better understanding about patient factors that may lead pain chronicity. In this study, we retrospectively compared physical and psychological factors in patients with acute and chronic orofacial pain. We analyzed data from 854 patients presenting to the Orofacial Pain Center, Department of Dental Anesthesiology, Tokyo Dental College, Suidobashi Hospital between April 2010 and March 2014. We categorized patients into the acute group if their condition had persisted <6 months and the chronic group if their condition had lasted 6 mon
