The role of zinc in the treatment of taste disorders.

In the 1990s the number of patients diagnosed with taste disorders in the USA and Japan was over one million people each year, and the number is increasing annually. Taste disorders are caused by several factors such as genetic disease, head trauma, structural changes, glossodynia, cancer, change of lifestyle, and more. The role of zinc in the treatment of taste disorders has been studied since the oral administration of zinc by patients was reported to improve their taste disorders. Carbonic anhydrase (CA), a zinc metalloenzyme, has also been studied in association with taste disorders, since

Burning mouth syndrome.

Burning mouth syndrome is a debilitating medical condition affecting nearly 1.3 million of Americans. Its common features include a burning painful sensation in the mouth, often associated with dysgeusia and xerostomia, despite normal salivation. Classically, symptoms are better in the morning, worsen during the day and typically subside at night. Its etiology is largely multifactorial, and associated medical conditions may include gastrointestinal, urogenital, psychiatric, neurologic and metabolic disorders, as well as drug reactions. BMS has clear predisposition to peri-/post menopausal fema

The protective effects of lafutidine for bortezomib induced peripheral neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) caused by bortezomib is an important complication of multiple myeloma. Subcutaneous injection of bortezomib reduced PN, but 24% of cases were grade 2 PN and 6% of cases were grade 3 PN. PN higher than grade 2 was not resolved by subcutaneous injection. PN higher than grade 3 has serious dose limiting toxicity and is the cause of discontinuing bortezomib treatment. Lafutidine is an H2-blocker with gastroprotective activity and is thought to function by increasing mucosal blood flow via capsaicin sensitive neurons. The same activity of lafutidine is considered to impro

Effectiveness of low-dose milnacipran for a patient suffering from pain disorder with delusional disorder (somatic type) in the orofacial region.

Glossodynia is chronic pain localized around the tongue, with no perceivable organic abnormalities. In the fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery, it is categorized as an oral psychosomatic disease. In contrast, psychiatric nosology classifies glossodynia as a pain disorder among somatoform disorders, per the DSM-IV. The patient was a 71-year-old woman who developed symptoms of glossodynia, specifically a sore tongue. In the decade before she presented to us, she had had bizarre symptoms of oral cenesthopathy such as the sensation that her teeth had become 'limp and floppy' and that she need

[2013 vulvodynia update].

Provoked vestibulodynia represents the most frequent cause of dyspareunia before menopause. Vulvodynia's pain and burning sensations are related to neuropathic pain and associated to various degrees of vulvar mucosal hypersensitivity (mostly in the vestibular area), pelvic floor muscles dysfunction, a disorder of general perception of pain and/or various complex regional pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia, glossodynia, painful bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis)… Vaginal infections such as candidiasis and vaginosis are important trigger and risk factors. Women suffering from vulvodynia a

Cutaneous sensory disorder.

Cutaneous sensory disorder (CSD) represents a heterogeneous clinical situation where the patient presents with either disagreeable skin sensations (ie, itching, burning, stinging) or pain (ie, allodynia) and/or negative sensory symptoms (ie, numbness, hypoaesthesia). These patients have no apparent diagnosable dermatologic or medical condition that explains the cutaneous symptom, and typically have negative findings upon medical workup. Skin regions that normally have a greater density of epidermal innervation tend to be more susceptible to the development of CSD. CSDs can affect any body regi

Oral health and menopause: a comprehensive review on current knowledge and associated dental management.

The menopause is physiological changes in women that give rise to adaptive changes at both systemic and oral level. As we all begin to reach an older age, dental health and hygiene becomes a major concern. The dentist is often the first person to appreciate numerous changes that are experienced throughout the body during menopause. The teeth and gums are extremely susceptible to any hormonal changes that take place just before menopause and readily decrease body's ability to fight off minor infections or maintain a healthy balance of useful and harmful bacteria within the oral environment. A valid approach in refractory glossodynia: a single-institution 5-year experience treating with Japanese traditional herbal (kampo) medicine.

Glossodynia is often refractory to conventional medicine, and there is only limited evidence to guide clinicians in its management. Patients with refractory glossodynia are often introduced to Japanese traditional herbal (Kampo) medicine experts under such circumstances because Kampo medicine has become known in Japan to be effective in treating a wide variety of symptoms refractory to conventional medicine. Herein, we report our single-institution 5-year experience treating patients with Kampo medicine for primary glossodynia that was refractory to conventional medicine. We found that 69.2% o

Styloid-stylohyoid syndrome.

This is a case report of Eagle's syndrome due to osseous metaplasia of the stylohyoid apparatus treated conservatively by injection of a local anesthetic - steroid combination. The incidence, etiopathogenesis, classification, clinical picture and various approaches to treatment of ossified stylohyoid ligament associated with Eagle's syndrome have been discussed. Anterolateral glossodynia, which is a previously unreported finding in Eagle's syndrome, and its possible etiology, has also been discussed.

Glossodynia and coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disorder of the small bowel caused by irritant gluten and, possibly, other environmental cofactors, in genetically prone people. Coeliac disease is characterized by no (or elusive or varied) symptoms. Oral clinical settings include aphthous stomatitis and dental enamel defects. Association with other signs in the oral mucosa (such as, for example, soreness, a burning sensation, erythema or atrophy) is much less common and, often, not considered by clinicians. We report on a 72-year-old woman with a four months history of oral burning s

Temporal arteritis presenting with tongue necrosis.

Spontaneous glossodynia is uncommon and glossodynia progressing to necrosis is especially rare. Although the commonest cause of lingual necrosis is giant cell arteritis, only a few cases of a new diagnosis of giant cell arteritis, clinically presenting with isolated lingual necrosis, have been reported.

Frequency analysis of heart rate variability: a useful assessment tool of linearly polarized near-infrared irradiation to stellate ganglion area for burning mouth syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is characterized by the following subjective complaints without distinct organic changes: burning sensation in mouth or chronic pain of tongue. BMS is also known as glossodynia; both terms are used equivalently in Japan. Although the real cause of BMS is still unknown, it has been pointed out that BMS is related to some autonomic abnormality, and that stellate ganglion near-infrared irradiation (SGR) corrects the autonomic abnormality. Frequency analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is expected to be useful for assessing autonomic abnormality. OBJEC

The dubious effect of milnacipran for the treatment of burning mouth syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a condition accompanied by oral burning symptoms, including glossal pain (glossodynia) without a detectable cause. Although BMS is a chronic-pain syndrome, only one self-controlled pilot study and some case reports have reported that milnacipran is effective for the treatment of chronic pain, including that caused by BMS. However, these papers assessed only pain, and the dosage of prescribed milnacipran varied from 30 to 150 mg/d in each patient. In this study, the dosage of prescribed milnacipran was set at 60 mg/d for 12 weeks for all patients, and

Giant cell tumour of mandible: report of a rare case.

INTRODUCTION: Elbow bony stability relies primarily on the high anatomic congruency between the humeral trochlea and the ulnar greater sigmoid notch. No practical tools are available to distinguish different morphotypes of the proximal ulna and herewith predict elbow stability. The aim of this study was to assess inter-observer reproducibility, evaluate diagnostic performance and determine responsiveness to change after simulated coronoid process fracture for three novel elbow radiographic indexes. METHODS: Ten fresh-frozen cadaver specimens of upper limbs from human donors were available for

Glossodynia from Candida-associated lesions, burning mouth syndrome, or mixed causes.

OBJECTIVE: Candida-associated lesions (CALs) and burning mouth syndrome (BMS) may induce glossodynia without objective manifestations. We investigated patients with glossodynia to examine the relationship between CAL and BMS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A visual analog scale was used to divide 95 patients with glossodynia into three groups according to intensity of pain at rest and when eating. Group A was the functional pain group; group B was the nonfunctional pain group; and group C was a mixed pain group. Antifungal treatment was scheduled for patients with suspected Candida infection by clinic

Hemifacial spasm, glossodynia, and dolichoectasia of the basilar artery.

The case of a 77-year-old hypertensive man presenting with hemifacial spasm and glossodynia is reported. Imaging studies revealed gross dolichoectasia of the vertebrobasilar arterial system with pontine compression. It is suggested that the neurologic symptoms most likely resulted from pontine compression, rather than from any compression of the cranial nerves.

Psychiatric diagnoses in patients with burning mouth syndrome and atypical odontalgia referred from psychiatric to dental facilities.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and atypical odontalgia (AO) are two conditions involving chronic oral pain in the absence of any organic cause. Psychiatrically they can both be considered as "somatoform disorder". From the dental point of view, however, the two disorders are quite distinct. BMS is a burning or stinging sensation in the mouth in association with a normal mucosa whereas AO is most frequently associated with a continuous pain in the teeth or in a tooth socket after extraction in the absence of any identifiable cause. Because of the absence of organic causes, BMS and AO
